Well, they squeak one out agains northwestern, who is totally not the same team on the road. Not sure how the NU linebacker didn’t get tossed for targeting, but it is what it is. The offense looked pretty pedestrian.

Looks like Walker Little only misses half the season so that's a positive for him. Let's hope the first game problems were a result of early season jitters/a solid NU defense/a QB injury and not anything worse.

Well, they looked in control of the game, and then gave up 35 unanswered points. It was pretty goddamn ugly.

We have confirmed that this team is not good. 21 players missing 6+ games doesn't help, but Shaw's playcalling continues to mystify and astound. Sigh.

Is Shaw on the hot seat?
To me, no, not at all.

He basically presided over a really great (almost historically great for this program) 8-10 year stretch and just had a year completely overwhelmed by injuries. I lost count of how many O-lineman we lost early this year, plus QBs and DBs.

Yes his playcalling is oddly conservative but mostly it has worked when they have the formula he seems to prefer (stout line play, run a lot to set up pass).

Also, Stanford is incredibly apathetic about its program (hard to overstate how much so), as long as there is good competitive effort and no scandals, he should be safe in perpetuity.

I think as long as he makes a bowl game--any bowl game--most years he keeps his jobs. At some point if you keep stringing four win seasons together maybe but he's earned himself a lot of good will.
