The Raiders have a bunch of picks, a ton of cap space, very few good players and GM Mike Mayock to try and keep Coach/GM/Generalissimo John Gruden focused and somewhat bound by reality and good sense. This looks like a team hoping to improve to the 8-9 wins range and then to compete when they get to Las Vegas in 2020.

Draft picks: 2019 - 3 x #1 (4,24,27), #2, 4, #5 (NJJ), 2 x #7
Cap Room: Around $55M after the Trent Brown and Antonio Brown deals. They will likely cut WR Seth Roberts and OT Donald Penn to make another $10M in room. They will have to pay draft picks around $15M in cap room this year.

Coaching Staff: John Gruden runs the offense, with only terrible OL coach Tom Cable having any real independence on that side of the ball. Paul Guenther is the DC, with quite a bit of autonomy. Not many changes from last year.

Offense:
QB- Derek Carr is in his prove it year. He was excellent at times last year (Denver, Indy, Chiefs, Steelers) and terrible at other times (SF, Chiefs in Arrowhead, Rams) and either way had not much to work with after they traded Cooper and Marshawn Lynch was hurt. His contract has regressed toward the middle of the NFL starting QB market and he is only 27. They will give him this year to prove he belongs, and if he is average again they will likely be looking for a successor next season.

RB: They tendered Jalen Richard at a 2nd round slot, they will likely bring one of Marshawn Lych or Doug Martin back and are probably in the draft / FA market for a back.

OL: Oh boy. The dominant 2016/7 offensive line under Mike Tice is gone. They traded Kelechi Osemele to the Jets and singed Trent Brown. They have to the two rookie tackles who were manhandled last year - Brandon Parker and Kolton Miller, along with the best center in the game (Rodney Hudson) and well paid LG Gabe Jackson. They also resigned journeyman G Denzel Good. They will probably draft one more OL and look to make it work with this group. I imagine Jackson moves back to LG and they go with either Good or a Rookie at RG. I would not be shocked if Brown plays on the right and Miller stays on the left.

WR: They have AB, Jordy Nelson, 2nd year guy Marcel Ateman coming back. They are going to be in the market for a receiver in the draft and probably another free agent as well, assuming they cut Seth Roberts.

TE: They probably are not resigning Jerrod Cook, who was great last year. They will bring back Dereck Carrier, Lee Smith and Darren Waller. They are probably drafting a TE.

I will finish up with the defense at another date.

Good summary.

Mystified by the Kolton Miller admittance of failure but in some ways thankful they are owning it this quickly. Parker also a big whiff, but maybe ok at guard.

I think they sign Bell, and maybe Justin Houston then go DL/LB/CB/WR with those first 4 picks. Probably most crucial picks of this entire Gruden era. Whiff and they are done for another few years.

the raiders have added 13 FA'S but 2 things

1 Carr has to get back to his 2016 level and with 4 out of the first 35 picks the raiders have to hit on at least 3
2 at best the raiders are 9-7 they have a good off but other than S L Joyler they sill need a lot of Def i think Maylock wouild be smart to trade 24 or 27 and get 1 more 2020 1st so if Carr does not work they can draft Tua hebert or eason next year

Sources: #Raiders coach Jon Gruden and GM Mike Mayock sent their scouts home for the weekend and they are not expected to return by draft time. The belief is they don’t know who to trust and wanted to clear the room.

I'm not sure what this even means. Do they not trust their scouts' acumen? Or do they not trust that they won't leak stuff to other teams? Or a little of both?

Caution is warranted because the original story is sourced to Rapsheet.

But if the report is true and the motivation is distrust of the scouts, the situation in Oakland is seriously fucked up.

To me, this is a sign that the situation in Oakland is finally functional.

These were Reggie's guys; he's gone, and the scout's work is over. Now, it's time for Gruden and Mayock to make decisions with that intel, and they don't want leaks or too many cooks in the kitchen. New scouts will be hired after the draft, when shakeups are common around the league.

How does this not make sense?

It makes sense when you put it this way, so now I'm curious how this is usually handled in other orgs.

Do most teams take this same approach (which likely means this was Rapsheet carrying another team's water to make life more difficult for Oakland), or is something unusual actually happening here?

I am not surprised and actually a little happy that they are doing this. They had a ton of leaks last year (everyone knew they wanted Kolton Miller, for example) and they still have Reggie McKenzie's scouting staff working in the building. Reggie has always seemed like a stand up guy, but his identical twin brother was still in the Raider's building until this morning and the director of college scouting was also Reggie's guy. As is pointed out by a Raider's beat writer below, the fact that this leaked to Rappaport in some ways justifies the move for Mayock. I dont think this has any impact on the top of the draft, where the players are so well known. I could see some down side on the third day, when they are deep into their board and dont have a scout on hand to look in the eye and ask follow up questions to real time.

Raiders Las Vegas beat writer on the topic:

It is worth noting what Raiders scouts have anticipated for months. That is, a shakeup in scouting department likely will occur after draft concludes. Not uncommon when new general manager is hired.
Raiders’ plan has been to devote final days before next week’s draft to war-room simulation scenarios. Scouts sent home on Easter weekend after months of input. Tight quarters now kept for strategy process ahead.
Oakland beat writer Vic Tafur

And the fact that a scout told Ian this kind of proves their point.
Not that surprising. There were a lot of leaks in last year’s draft. And a lot of the scouts weren’t coming back anyway.

Unaware of last year’s leaking and that they are still using Reggie’s team. Given all that, it makes sense to me.

This also fits our SoSH draft experience with a member having an insider for years then having that disappear.

That was pretty awesome though for like two years though.

Mayock only got hired at the end of last year ... if you think about it, the college football season - and therefore the scouting season - is over or all but over at that point. So he's had no opportunity to bring in "his guys" for this scouting cycle.

Dan Hatman is as wise and knowledgeable as anyone I know, and has worked for three NFL teams. His take:

Things to consider with #Raiders draft room news:
1) Day 1/2 picks are decided upon by 3-5 execs. Most teams don't leverage area scouts into those to a heavy degree.
2) Teams do not always have every staff member in the draft room. Some are only called upon when they are needed
3) When new GM hired (Mayock), all staff expect some changes
4) Scouts contracts end after the draft, which is when heavy movement occurs anyway
5) Teams hold Dec, Feb, and Apr draft meetings to extract insight from area scouts
6) Team boards are frequently set by same 3-5 execs
7) Day 3 and UDFA is where most teams leverage area scouts (#Raiders will be most vulnerable here after telling area scouts not to come back)

I don't believe it's best practice to hold area scouts away from draft day (needs to be inclusive), but this isn't stunning.

Pretty happy with Ferrell/Jacobs/Abrams. Murphy or Greedy at 35 tomorrow and then a TE later and they will have made some real progress.

Can’t help but be happy, though there are quibbles.

Ferrell was my favorite non Bosa pass rusher and he is a perfect scheme fit for Guenther. But he probably could have been had at any spot in the top ten. I also hope we aren’t really wishing they had picked Ed Oliver in a couple years.

Love the Jacobs pick, he’s a perfect pick for a Gruden offense. But I think it is never a good idea to pick a running back in the first round unless you think he might be going to Canton someday.

I like Abram better than Rapp or Thornhill and love the idea of having three absolute missiles in the middle of the field who can all shift between covering slot receivers and playing deep with Joyner, Joseph and Abram. But I still don’t know who the hell covers Travis Kelsey on this team. Considering how cheaply teams like Washington and Atlanta were able to move into the back of the first round, I don’t mind sticking with Abram rather than trading back.

I was worried that it would be impossible to pay all three first round picks in 2022 if they hit, but by drafting a safety and an RB, they are ensuring the hit won’t be that onerous if all three are worthy of a second contract. I wonder if that factored into Mayock’s decision making.

Good post. I also wondered if Fant was there at 24 if they go there instead of Jacobs but we will never know. Love Jacobs but have to pray he isn’t Trent Richardson.

Lots of intrigue at 35 without a 3rd rounder, big pick. Can’t decide between a CB (one of Murphy/Greedy should be there), or a TE like Irv Smith Jr. Need another edge guy and a LB at some point too. But progress, and Mayock knows this isn’t getting fixed in one draft and likely looks at this as a two year process with 2 more first rounders next year.

Mayock on NFLN last night said he received two offers for #35, which he declined. Thinks there will be more offers today and left open using or trading the pick.

Admitted jitters but seemed very relaxed and happy with the night’s work.

I think all three picks are pretty safe and likely to be at least solid pros, but damn, I agree with everyone who wishes they could have traded down a few spots and then taken Ferrell.

Maybe they tried and there was no deal to do that, but another pick or two would have been nice. Still, at least we know they got the guy they really wanted.

Rumor deal with Miami at 13 fell apart. Takes two teams to trade so as long as they got their guy I’m good. They got 3 very good players.

That is almost certainly what happened.

Either Mayock or Gruden gave Mike Silver a ton of access this week and he reported this last night:

In Monday's mock-draft exercise at Raiders HQ, which I shared here Tuesday, Mayock took Clelin Ferrell 13th overall after trading down with Miami
They wanted to trade back, but they were not willing to miss Farrell. If they really had him 1B with Bosa, just picking him makes sense. I am a little worried that they are over valuing character relative to athletic ability (isn’t the whole point of paying a coach $10M/per is so you can bring in guys other teams can’t?) But I can’t knock it that badly. When i watched Farrell dominate Jonah Williams in the national championship game I was smitten and hoped they’d pick him.

Ferrell is a terrific player and a perfect fit for Guenther's system.

Also, as some of you note above, all three first rounders are high character guys. I wonder how much the impending move to Vegas influenced these picks. Obviously, they need to have mature, dedicated players who won't be as tempted by the many allures of sin city.

For whatever the reason, I'm glad for the focus on character. I don't really think it has much to do with Vegas though. Seems like drug and domestic violence suspensions are coming up more and more and teams are dealing with the consequences of it on and off the field. I'm sure they'll still take chances on players like they did with Conley, but if they can find players they like with maybe a little less of that risk? Great. Makes the team easier to root for too.

Apparently the Raiders are moving Trent Brown back to right tackle. So they gave him the biggest contract ever for an OL and moved him to RT? Nicely done, Gruden / Mayock.

Meh, this distinction is becoming less and less meaningful every year. Most of the premier AFCW pass rushers will be coming from the right side, so why pay a guy that much to stay out of that action?

Why not, when you are paying a mid first round rookie contract on the other side? Especially when Brown's contract only has two years of guaranteed money.

You would move last year's first round pick Kolton Miller off of the position he wants to play and is comfortable playing to put the "right salary" in the "right position"?

Would you have rather spent another first round pick on the position, either through drafting (and you would have had to trade up to get ahead of Philly at 22) or trading for a veteran?

Would you have rather gone the Denver route of giving the much less talented and productive JaJaun James 2/27 rather than 2/36 to play the position?

Why wouldn't you play the guy Von Miller says gives him the most trouble opposite Von Miller?

Brown prefers RT and Kolton Miller prefers LT. Leave them be.

Its not terrible, but those things accumulate into multiple inefficiencies. Reach on 3 first rounders, pay a RT the highest salary in the history of lineman. It just adds up to not maximizing a roster.

Another point on the Ferrell selection. Mayock was a respected member of the draft media over the last decade. If he was still a member of that and publishing top 100 lists and mock drafts, and listed Ferrell as his 2nd best DE, then the copy cat portion of that media would have tagged on and put him higher on their boards/mocks/etc. The pick at 4 would have been much more acceptable if he had his usual influence on prospect ratings leading up to the draft. The copycats didn’t have his input this year.

Conversely, your starting RT can play probowl caliber LT if an injury were to arise.

100% agreed. Brown can play either very well. Use K.Miller where he's most comfortable. Von Miller and Bosa mostly match up against RT anyway.

Raiders signed Richie Incognito.

Why does that franchise, no matter who the owner and/or GM, so revel in the villain role that they seem to in many cases prioritize adding shitheads at all cost? They are all talented, but there is no way I can see a locker room of Burfict, Brown, and now Incognito succeeding before they kill themselves

Lumping Brown in with a racist bully or blatant dirty cheater is garbage.

But signing Incognito and Burfict is also garbage. I get it, veteran minimum for both, they will be cut the moment they fuck up etc. etc. etc. But Richie Incognito is a fucking horrible human being who shouldn't be signed by anyone. At least, unlike Burfict, it is highly likely he can still play and will actually be a contributor at Left Guard, so hopefully the upside payoff will make up for the stench of the moral failing that is bringing a racist bully like Incognito on board.

I'm not comparing who they are as people. I'm talking about how they present in the locker room. All 3 are on the continuum of combustibility. Its like Brown was not that bad so they had doubled and tripled down.

Yes, maybe you're thinking of the fight with the funeral director when he wanted to take his father's head. And when he retired, he said his liver and kidneys were failing (or something similar).
On the bright side, if he makes the team he'll be the oldest guard in the NFL.

Antonio Brown was not arrested, and charges were not filed, but a physical altercation happened during the off-season between him and the mother of one of his kids. She alleged, and then recanted, that he shoved her during an argument. The police report and photos of her minor injury are online.

He clearly has his own side of the story, but let’s not go nuts defending Antonio Brown’s honor.
