What a joke. Third preseason game as well when usually starters get the most reps.

After being forced to cancel the HOF game a couple years ago, you might think the NFL would learn and be more on top of this crap.

On Hard Knocks, they made it sound like Gruden wanted to play on the field as it was, and it was the Packers who insisted on changing things around to avoid the end zones.

I appreciated the irony of AB shit-talking Rapistburger after he took shots at Emmanual Sanders a few years ago when he did the same thing.

Another entertaining-ish Hard Knocks ep this week, and another time I come out thinking, “Wow - Gruden seems like a good guy, but is he a good coach?” I mean, it is a skill to relate to the players in the way he and other HCs do, and there are indeed many ways to achieve buy-in and passion and team cohesion. And maybe he’s (still?) an X-and-O’s genius and Hard Knocks apparently doesn’t get into that side of things all that much. But...

It sure seems like an inordinate amount of rah-rah bullshit. I keep thinking how often BB talks about it being “the players who win games,” they’re the ones out on the field, producing or not, etc..., and getting an inside look like the ones HK provides really hammers that reality home. Gruden, I’m sure, brings difference-making talents to the locker room and sideline, and certainly he does more than just cheerlead and motivate while dropping F bombs every other half paragraph, but holy crrrrap did he seem genuinely THRILLED to win that game with a walk-off FG. Next...

Aaron Rodgers and that infuriating and, frankly, obscene porn stache manages to be fucking annoying on a cellular level despite being on-screen for a grand total of three seconds. He’s such an asshole. On the other hand...

Pride of Cameroon LB Jason Cabinda and his mom are a delight. I wish them nothing but more football stretches like their time in Winnipeg. Hope he makes it and sticks. And he sounds a shit-ton like Devin McCourty when he’s yelling on the field.

Keelan Doss is a legit player. (You heard it here fourth.) He just moves and performs like A FOOTBALL PLAYER. Sure wish the Pats had seen him. I think he’ll play for a long time in this league. But then there’s...

Derek Carr, who, again, I understand, is maybe just trying to compensate for the crying jag last year, but my impression of him - and obviously who gives a shit about “impressions,” let alone mine - remains a negative one. He just seems cocky and dick-ish, esp for a guy who isn’t necessarily a lock to be their QB two years from now. I liked him a couple years ago, and I suppose I mostly wish him the best anytime he’s not playing YOUR REIGNING SUPER BOWL CHAMPS, but his towel-snapping alpha routine reads super douchey and a bit over the top. Finally...

Antonio Brown. He may very well be crazy, and he did nothing all that different from what he did in previous episodes, but somehow I liked him approximately 7.32% more. I kept wondering, Do I find him more sincere or less cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs? I think it’s maybe my empathy kicking in, feeling like it might just be that he’s sincerely cuckoo and kind of full of shit, but that he absolutely BUYS the bullshit because he’s cuckoo.

Raiders go undefeated in preseason then win 7-8 games this year. Here endeth the Hard Knocks check-in. Carry on.

4 QBs on the 53-man roster including Kizer, who they signed today.
Let’s be smarter than Bill Simmons here*. The Raiders has 4 QBs on the roster for less than 19 hours. They put Peterman on IR, basically as a stash. Mayock apparently loved Kizer when scouting him out of college, so I can see spending the roster spot on a 3rd QB. I am generally anti 3rd QB, but if the spot is for a young guy with upside, I can see it.

In other news, helmet gate was all just a work to get AB some more coin:

*Simmons spent 120 seconds on his pod talking about how the Raiders going into the season with 4 QBs was why they were going to lose in week one and be terrible.

This is an interesting reaction to me. Several prominent observers, including Mike Lombardi as well as Charles Robinson and Terrez Paylor from Yahoo have talked about how Hard Knocks shows that Carr isn’t Alpha enough to be a star QB in the League. The interaction with Marcel Ateman where the $25M QB basically negotiated with a practice squad wideout to run better routes was what Paylor & Robinson pointed to specifically.

God AB played that perfectly. Got out of some crappy training camp practices and preseason games and got a new endorsement out of the deal. I feel like I should be righteously indignant but all I can do is smile at the audacity. Well played Antonio...now go have a 120 catch season and lead the Raiders to the playoffs.

Yes please make me taking him later than expected in all my fantasy drafts pay off. In all serious news yeah man if he was using this as a not so subtle reason to just miss training camp and preseason and ends up with an endorsement kudos to his advisers.

If he was crazy like a fox, very well played. But as a long time AB observer, more likely it's just plain crazy. SEP.

This is such an indictment on Mike Tomlin and the Steelers. He didn't just start doing this stuff when he got to Oakland. Tomlin and the entire organization enabled him and let him get away with whatever he wanted until the end. Now, Mayock is not putting up with it.

Somehow Breer doesn't understand that.

part of me is like, you knew you were getting a diva WR. isn't putting up with his shit in exchange for the massive talent part of the deal? now the Raiders are actively choosing to hinder their talent on the field.

the other part of me is happy the Raiders aren't putting up with the shit, but then, why did they trade for him? and so I keep circling...

At the same time, maybe they tried to get him to be a better teammate and it wasn't happening, hence the trade. Hard to change a tigers stripes...

That's where I am, too. I kind of agree with Breer (gross) in that the job of the head coach is to get his players on the field. I can definitely see the counterargument, though. And I should add that this is Mayock -- once again, Gruden is making sure that someone else can be blamed for what's happening on the field. It's never, ever his fault.

The Raiders O/U is 6, which I think is just perfect. Their schedule is:
DEN, KC, @MIN, @IND, CHI, @GB, @HOU, DET, LAC, CIN, @NYJ, @KC, TEN, JAC, @LAC, @DEN

I think they can beat Denver twice, Detroit, Cincy and probably the Jets. Their whole season comes down to how they do against the AFC South: Indy, Ten, and Jac. I think they probably win exactly 6.

They knew what they were signing up for, so no sympathy here. But taking game checks from him is the best path forward at this point.

This could get ugly(ier).

Breer is too much, Antonio Brown basically skipped the finale last year and stood on the sidelines in a fur coat. And they TRADED him precisely because Tomlin couldn’t deal with him (and Roethlisberger winning the power struggle). That’s not an indictment on Tomlin because at a point (and Brown is well past it) you can’t sprinkle your coaching pixie dust to get a player to not be an unreasonable PITA, mind you. But the idea that Tomlin corralled Brown is frankly counterfactual.

It's not just on Tomlin. It's the whole organization in Pittsburgh. They completely underperformed their talent level with Ben/Bell/AB.

I tend to agree with Breer--Tomlin helped keep the wheels on despite having (at least) two massive a-holes on his hands in Ben and AB. If AB feels like he can do anything now it's because Tomlin finally gave up and let AB force his way out of town.

In other news, I can't believe I'm defending Breer and Tomlin...

That's kind of my take too (re: Tomlin). He's always been a known diva but - if memory serves - he didn't explode to a full-blown TO level pain in the ass until about a year ago. Now he's a flat-out cancer. It seemed to have happened overnight so there almost had to be some sort of catalyst.
