don't see why it would affect Forbath either way, he knows any game action he's called upon for is effectively an audition for 31 other teams, if need be. It's not like the kicking profession is at a zenith right now around the league, he'll have people watching.

If he and Folk spend all of next week having a competition between the two of them, so be it. None of us are all that wedded to either one, I don't think. In Joe Judge we trust (?).

Basically said to my wife when he got clipped on the knee that’s at least an MCL injury. James Ferentz time.

around the way
Tyler Gauthier is on the practice squad if it was a long-term thing but I'd imagine they'll have Eluemunor taking snaps in practice this week if it's just an emergency fill-in.
If Karras is really only the MCL, I doubt that the cut anyone to promote Gauthier. One week with Eluemunor as emergency backfill and Karras is probably active the week after with a brace.

So, that rule about needing to be on the roster on 11/30 to play in the playoffs, how does that play in to the fact that any kicker that they sign now (assuming it's Folk) will not have been on the roster on 11/30?

That only applies to players on the Reserve/Retired list that Gronkowski is on.

Patriots signed Albert Huggins, DT out of Clemson, claimed off waivers from Philly. I’m mildly excited b/c I‘m familiar with him from college. His main fault was he got beat out by Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence. Played a bunch b/c Clemson rotates guys and was in starting role after Lawrence got suspended for the failed drug test. He played well against both Notre Dame and Bama. Good size. 6’3” 305 and he’s strong. The type of player that could really pan out with the right role and good coaching.

Old friend Russell Bodine is still a free agent as well. They obviously didn't think enough of him to keep him around but that probably had to do with Ferentz having more positional versatility.

I was just going to post on the same. If I recall, Bodine didn't want to play unless he was a starter - and it's late in the season for him to get back into game shape - but those potential hurdles aside, he must be pretty good to have started all those years; is in his prime; and has good size for a center.

They didn't IR him, so you have to figure that the 12/29 Miami game in week 17 is possible in their eyes.
They have no more return slots so they can't IR anyone that has a chance to play in they playoffs that they deem invaluable and starting C should be in that discussion.

I'm a little surprised they signed a DT as they'll need a kicker by Sunday, right? So, either they are looking to cut someone else and sign a kicker, or they are not going to sign a PK.

I would assume Folk is going to be back before Sunday

They're going to cut / IR someone else and sign a kicker (probably Folk?).

They could still IR him later if his knee isn't responding. There's no reason to do anything until they need the roster spot.

Is the turnaround time after an appendectomy that quick, especially if there’s a blocked FG and a chance of contact?

From Tweet upthread (post #1108, last Thursday): #Patriots K Nick Folk recently had an appendectomy that will knock him out this week, but likely not more, source confirms (@Trags on it first). It was done laparoscopically, minimally invasive, which should mean a short recovery time. Still, NE needs a new kicker.

Based on DRS's post on the same subject when it was initially reported yesterday, I'm going to take the over on that. It's just good that he stands a chance of coming back in the playoffs, because despite the precipitous drop from Andrews to him, Karras has been competent, has 6 months of first-team reps with Brady, and the dropoff from him to Ferentz or Street Free Agent To Be Named Later... man, I don't want to think about it. That guy might end up the way Belichick's own football-playing career ended up.

I am hoping (in the same way I hoped for Nink to be the fill-in long snapper one week) that they just don't hvae a placekicker Sunday. Let Bailey do any xps and go for it often---"we aren't beating KC with field goals"

No, I neither expect that nor believe it's the right choice. But it would be a fun BB "I don't care what others think makes sense" move.

It's Wednesday. Shouldn't the Patriots either be having Bailey kicking fielding goals / PATs in practice or be bringing in a kicker or two for a tryout? Or be running lots of 2 point conversion plays?

It's easy to draw the conclusion that they were waiting to see whether the 49ers kicker cleared waivers before, for instance, bringing back Folk.

And, since the entire practice is not open to media, they might very well have been seeing how well Bailey placekicks (with the backup holder), and practicing 2-point plays. We aren't likely to hear about either unless someone invoilved makes a slip of the tongue.

Sounds like they were waiting for McG, reported that they did indeed make a claim for him. Real bummer they're 10-2, could've had him.

Kind of a weird series of events. I assume they could have signed him to the practice squad to begin with? Maybe they thought he'd be able to beat out someone else on the roster, but when they brought him in for a few days of practice they realized that wasn't true?

The Kessler thing is befuddling too. They must be concerned at this point that if they release him again someone else will poach him. Keeping a third QB all year is not exactly a vote of confidence for Stidham I don’t think, and keeping a player you likely could re-sign on Monday by cutting a different player on Saturday is especially strange, when the player you keep will not be active on Sunday.

It might also be a hedge that there's more wrong physically with TB12 than they're letting on

We're so bad right now I bet AB doesn't even tweet about returning this week.
