According to ESPN's Todd Archer: if teams want to place a player on returnable IR, that player has to be on the 53-man roster for a day.

So someone like Froholdt could be on the roster Sunday and on returnable IR on Monday.
Froholdt would not be my guess for an IR-DTR guy. He's more of a redshirt year guy.

Damien Harris seems logical given the current depth at RB which come with significant injury concerns.

Yeah, as noted above it could be more a guy like Harry (who could easily have a more serious injury {high ankle sprain?} than they've let on) .

Regarding international player Jakob Johnson:

The four AFC East clubs will carry these overseas players on their roster until the end of training camp. At that time, the players are eligible for an international player practice squad exemption, granting them an eleventh practice squad member that is ineligible to be activated during the 2019 season.
So if no NFL team claims him, he looks to be the 11th guy on the practice squad.

Yea but that's not really true. Who was the 53rd man on the roster a few hours ago isn't necessarily the 53rd guy the next day. I feel like that tweet is pointless.

Wait what? I thought he had a minor ding.
I don't think anyone outside of the Pats organization really knows for sure. My sense is that it's not major and the team is just begin cautious with Harry. He was in uniform on the sideline for the last pre-season game, which would be kind of weird if he had an injury that merited being put on IR, I would think.

Howe noted yesterday (Athletic paywall) that practices are closed to the media now, so they're all in the dark on how Harry is progressing:

N’Keal Harry looked the part before a couple of injuries sabotaged his development in Detroit. There haven’t been any answers to the way he has looked now that practice is closed to the media, so who knows how quickly it’ll come together with him and Brady. Physically, Harry has the tools to make impactful plays even with minimal chemistry with his quarterback, and that was evident when they connected on only seven of 17 passes in camp. But if those two figure it out early, Harry’s rookie season could be unparalleled in New England.

There's a non-zero chance that Harry is fine (mostly), Belichick and McDaniels have really liked what they've seen from him in practice, and this is all just prudent caution for the health of their prized rookie, combined with a bit of gamesmanship.

Assuming Harry doesn't go on IR, we won't know anything until the injury report comes out. And even that probably won't tell us much. Harry could be listed as questionable and then go out and play every offensive snap against the Steelers. Wouldn't be the first time.

When will we be guessing the PRACTICE SQUAD? I’ll start here, mods obviously please move if necessary.

FB Jakob Johnson (exemption, this one goes to 11)
OL Dan Skipper
OL Cole Croston
WR Braxton Berrios?
LB/ST Calvin Munson
DT David Parry
LB/ST Christian Sam
CB Ken Webster
FB/TE Andrew Beck
DL Trent Harris
OL James Ferentz

My guess is that last one and a couple other spots may come from other organizations, cycling through, getting mini looks at various players. For now, though, I wouldn’t hate this group, although I’d prefer some higher end OL guys, as would, I suspect, that Dante guy.

You're likely going to have/need a QB on that practice squad

Does he go down as the worst pick of 18? Someone has to wear that crown. Sucks Rivers is approaching that for 17 though at least he was a 3rd.
Without a doubt. A second round pick who never plays a down even though he was healthy enough to be active the first half of his first season? Terrible.

It doesn't bother me that much--the draft is a crap shoot and the pats make up with it with the UDFAs, vet pick ups and late round picks--but he totally sucked.

And the 2018 draft was pretty weak. Looking at the guys taken near him, not many guys have emerged yet.

Brissett is the only QB currently on Colts' roster. ESPN's Dianna Russini tweets that they are very interested in Hoyer.

Edit: Harris vs. Burkhead? I think you've got the wrong Harris cut by the Pats.

Yeah I'd rather have Harris over Burkhead. Tough cuts this year.
I wonder if Harris vs. Burkhead (and to a lesser extent, Gunner over Crossen) is the BB equivalent of GFIN? In both cases, it seems he prioritized players who might contribute to a 21019 win over players who might have a greater impact in 2021, or event 2020.

Of course, Stidham vs. Hoyer is the exact opposite of this, so maybe I'm staring too hard at the fringes of the roster, looking for hidden messages...

Well, you're not wining the SB with Brian Hoyer. I guess Bill's willing to risk losing games if Brady goes down for a bit for extra depth elsewhere.

Well, now, Brian Hoyer wouldn't be the worst QB to ever win a SB, would he?

Damn. Was hoping Pats were just being cautious with Harry but guess it's worse than that. Hope he comes back 100% in a few weeks.

Ok so this is actually probably a situation that is better for the Pats. If Harry isn't really ready, better to have him take a few more weeks to prepare and heal up, and let Thomas - who appears to still have quite a bit left in the tank - play for now. Top 4 receivers for NE are pretty damned good now: Edelman, Gordon, Thomas, and Dorsett.

I wouldn't make this assumption based on one preseason game against the dregs of the Giants roster. If they thought he really did have that much left, they wouldn't have run the risk of releasing him and losing him; they would have used some other piece of flotsam to get down to 53 originally

Doesn't this make him ineligible to practice for six weeks? The injury must be more severe than we thought.
