Shrodinger's roster spot
Felger: Is it possible for a player to be released, and then not be released?

As mentioned several days ago, those last few roster spots can come down to who can actually be dealt away for something.

Happy for Gunner but I thought Crossen had the makings of a really good NFL player. It sure how I feel about that move.

Very happy "The Gun Show" (as McC calls him) made the team.

If this was, say, 2010 then Crossen makes the team (over someone like Terrence Wheatley) and Gunner does not.

Agreed. But now they’re stacked at DB...though now they don’t have Crossen or Dawson. So...thinner. But still lots of quality players in the secondary. Like what Gunner brings. Just hate seeing Crossen emerge...with another team.

I like Crossen too and his ST role too.
But something bad would have to happen for him to play many meaningful snaps on D.

Manish Mehta tweeted yesterday that BB traded Dawson to Denver to keep him away from the Jets, who desperately need CBs. He hasn't tweeted about Crossen yet.

DT only had 150k in dead money and a 1.5 roster bonus. Given he recently admitted there are days he feels like he just doesn't have it the only surprise to me was that he wasn't cut sooner.

Wonder if they wanted him to go on PUP and he said he wouldn’t, forcing team to activate him and indirectly precipitating the release.

It was puzzling he was activated given the roster crunch—above would explain that

Maybe Allen (or Hollister) is headed back at TE, so Thomas goes.

Edit: Yes, the PUP machinations with Thomas did not seem optimal for the Pats.

Isn’t the rule that a veteran in the opening roster is guaranteed the year salary. So marginal vets are cut for week one then resigned and are then week to week

So likely BB didn't think he warranted his roster bonus but instead brings him back on a heavily incentivized deal?

Can they bring him back "as soon as Monday"? Dont they have to wait till after week 1?
I believe they can do it either way, but the salary is guaranteed if he's signed week 1

Edit - what RO said

They have to wait a week if the purpose was to not fully guarantee his salary. If they just did it so they could work some IR-DTR magic, then Thomas can re-sign Monday once the player has been put on IR after making the 53. Hate to say it, but....HARRY?

According to ESPN's Todd Archer: if teams want to place a player on returnable IR, that player has to be on the 53-man roster for a day.

So someone like Froholdt could be on the roster Sunday and on returnable IR on Monday.

Definitely wasn’t expecting both Dawson and Crossen to be goners. Cut day is always interesting.

Right. I think this is the plan for DT. Saves a roster spot if they keep a player on the 53-man today (say, Froholdt) and then immediately R-IR him, then re-sign Thomas. It's a nice little way to stash a player you want in the organization, assuming the player you're cutting is on board with the plan.
