I didn't see much regarding Stidham yesterday. Anyone see any reports?

And why haven't we seen Bennett yet?

From Phill Perry's postcard:

Jarrett Stidham found early success in his 11-on-11 work, hitting Stephen Anderson for a score. His next pass was broken up by Keion Crossen. It was intended for Lance Kendricks. Stidham's third drop-back was failed as the coverage forced him to hold onto the ball for an extended period of time.
* Final 11-on-11 goal-line tally for Stidham: 1-for-3

Brady not practicing today. PANIC!!!1!!!111

I did read that Bennett was excused for personal reasons yesterday, so I assume that whatever that was has carried over. He is in town though.

By the way - Phil Perry's postcards from camp are an awesome daily snapshot of training camp, for those who don't read them.

Man I love me some Max Kellerman. His latest was picking Le'Veon Bell as the best player in the AFC East. The same Le'Veon Bell who hasn't played in a year, whose coach doesn't want him, and who finished 24th in yards per carry for qualified RBs in his last season.

To be fair, Bell could play an important role in leading his team to a 50% increase in wins. No one on the Patriots is going to do that.

Kellerman & Rob Parker are what I call the Human Clickpede. Same chain of circular BS for views and such. The lowest denominator of anyone on media talking about sports.

“J.C. Jackson covered a ton of ground to covered the deep third to break up Brady’s deep bid for Dorsett. If Jackson becomes this reliable in zone coverages, he’ll be hard to keep off the field.”

Brady on the side working with Harry, White, Michel, and....UDFA WR Jakobi Myers. Interesting that he’s progressed to this point. He’s made plays each of the first 2 days.
Where is Meyers lining up? Are they working him as a big slot or is he getting more outside routes? He’s one of those guys that could have positional versatility. Just curious if you know.

“Looks like practice is over. Brady went 0-4 in 11-on-11s with some ugly throws. Brian Hoyer went 1-of-1, and Jarrett Stidham went 2-of-2. Brady was 2-of-8 overall. Hoyer was 3-of-3 overall. Stidham was 3-of-4 overall.”

If the top of the depth chart for outside CB is Gilmore, JMC, and JC Jackson (an improved one when he had a good rookie year, rare/uncommon for a DB) that’s easily a top 5 unit in the league.

Slot corner is interesting. I happen to like Jon Jones a lot. He’s also a good STer. But Jones is in a contract year. Wondering how Duke Dawson will emerge. There were rumblings that he wasn’t getting it in practice or behind the scenes last year. This is year 1.5 for him so it’s not make or break but ideally you’d like to see him emerge as a solid slot option.

Triangulating multiple twitter posts but on mobile.

The Patriots don’t use the fade in the end zone a ton. It is a low completion percent option based on a small sample of their work in the red zone the past couple of years. However they are throwing the fade to Harry quite a bit in practice so far and he’s making some fantastic catches. I think the Patriots have proven that they will do anything if they can do it well so we might see an increase in fades (to Harry) in the red zone.

Edit: also saw some notes on using 2 RBs near the goal line too and not just Develin as FB in the passing game.

I think the common thread is: we have these guys on our roster. They do these things well. Let’s do the things they do well. I might be oversimplifying it a bit.

Lot of goal line drills today per beat writers. Brady was 10-10 in team drills to start and ended up 14-17. Nice throw to Mo Harris for a TD. Defensive tackle tandem Guy/Pennel had a couple run stuffs on the goal line.

After practice, Bennett said he appreciated Bill Belichick for treating him like a human being while he needed to tend to a family matter at home. Bennett said he now wants to play harder for Belichick for giving him the extra few days to get to camp
Celtics coach Brad Stevens and forward Jayson Tatum watched practice from the sideline in the middle of the two fields. Belichick spent a few minutes with the pair at one point during positional drills.

It's a shame to think about how much better this run would have been if they didn't hate their coach.

Cool article about Matthew Slater:

https://theathletic.com/1101770/2019/07/28/a-man-on-an-island-inside-matthew-slaters-unique-training-camp-routines/?source=dailyemail
Slater is pretty much working out alone this camp.

While emotions rose and each side of the ball tried to impose its will on the other, on the opposite field Matthew Slater worked alone with a visiting coach.
While his practice schedule has steadily become more focused on special teams, Slater hasn’t taken part in any offensive drills or team periods this summer, which he says is a first. Most of the time, he doesn’t even waste time watching those sessions.
One of my recent tweets about how Slater spends his days prompted an NFL position coach to reach out: “He works on being a gunner the WHOLE practice?” Yeah, pretty much.

The Pats re-worked Marcus Cannon's contract. Mike Silver says they've guaranteed $4.5 million of his 2019 salary.

Brian Phillips has this on Cannon.
"Cannon already had $2.15M of his $5.5M 2019 salary guaranteed before this restructure. We’ll see how the details shake out, but it could free up $3M in cap space if the new incentives are NLTBE."

Collins has never had a talent problem. It's kind of amazing: after the Eagles Super Bowl, we were pretty much universally lamenting the very poor and thin LB corps the Pats had - major area of weakness. They then drafted Bentley and Sam, and even though Sam showed talent and Bentley started the year off great, neither really contributed to their 2018 season.

And now, they've got one of the best and deepest LB corps in the NFL.

The Pats defense this year really has a strong potential to surprise to the upside. Each group has something to be excited about as we enter the season.

Yup. Injuries can and probably will ruin things a bit but only question I really have right now is off the edge. Confident that Bennett will be solid but will need someone else to step up. And we have some realistic targets in Wise, Winovich, and Simon.

The physical talent on this squad is in good shape. We'll have a safety issue at some point in the coming years but hopeful that DMC, Harmon, and Chung can maintain their previous levels of production.

6'5" 315 UDFA OL out of Florida. Former 5-star #2 overall recruit in the country. Started 44 games at Florida. According to reports, he's an athletic prospect who can make plays in open space. Good blocker in an outside zone running scheme.
What's wrong with him? How does a guy with that size and scouting report, starting that many games at a big time program, go undrafted?

I’m not sure what to make if it yet, but Howe and Bedard seem to have different opinions on various guys. Howe is more positive on Collins, has been impressed by Pennel, and thinks Karras could be a key back up across all positions. Bedard makes it sound like none of those guys are doing anything. Strange to see such divergent opinions, but maybe Bedard is feeling a bit stretched trying to cover the whole team while Howe has some help.

Bedard has praised Pennel as well. I thought he was a really good, under the radar signing at the time. The Pats' run defense was porous at times last season. Pennel should help there.

With Collins, it could just be differing viewpoints. Bedard called him out for not making any big plays, but also said he's been lining up all over the field. To Howe, the fact that he's lining up all over the field, and not screwing up his assignments, might be reason enough for praise.

I'm more with Howe than Bedard, who has increasingly become hot-takey with his Pats columns at BSJ. Collins needs to work within the defense, not freelance in a misguided attempt to be a playmaker on every down. That's what got him into trouble during his first stint with the Pats. He was always trying to make the big play instead of making the right play. This defense is way too talented for that. If he just plays within the defense, the big plays will come.
