Doug Kyed sets how things stand after UDFA

The New England Patriots entered the 2019 NFL Draft with 70 players on their active roster. They also have wide receiver Josh Gordon, who’s suspended, signed but on a reserve list. The Patriots drafted 10 players and reportedly signed nine more undrafted free agents. NFL teams are permitted 90 players, but fullback Jakob Johnson doesn’t count against that limit, because he’s part of the international gateway program.

So, 70 – 1 + 10 + 9 = 88.

The Patriots have two remaining open roster spots.

Outside of WR, TE, and maybe interior DL, they look to have some pretty good depth. And the WR story changes quickly if Demaryius shows he has something left in the tank, Gordon is reinstated, and Berrios shows anything.

WIth that said, the thought of smash-mouth football and the Patriots winning 17-7 games in Sept/October gets me very excited.

We know there's still lots of work to do. I'm sure they will make a deal or two, and guys will get cut during camp that the Pats may be interested in. But on the whole, that's a very very solid roster. Even without Gronk (remember they won a SB without him...actually...4) they have a lot of offensive talent. I'm excited for the guys who were injured last year to come back healthy - Bentley and Wynn particularly.

This team is in very good shape at this point.

Given the teams approach to TE so far, should we increase the odds of a Gronk return?

How well does Harris block? Will they go to 2RB sets often? Will they turn Harris into a FB?
Can Develin be converted into a TE?

Has anyone tried to figure out the cap viability of bringing Gronk back? I love the idea, but he isn't going to play for free and the Pats aren't swimming in cap space - Miguel says they're at $10m left including their draft picks. And that's without adding another TE.

My guess is that the least he'd play for is $4mm for half a season, and even that seems light. Can that be done? Would it essentially leave the Pats without an emergency fund?

By the time he signs, the emergency fund will either have been spent, or he *is* the emergency.

I don't think so. I just don't think they liked the TE in this class.

Turning Harris into an undersized, inexperienced-blocking FB and Develin into an undersized TE with no pass-catching dynamism wouldn't be a good use of resources.

Looking the roster globally, I have as locks:
QB (2): Brady, Stidham, with Hoyer close to a lock
RB (5): Michel, Burkhead, White, Harris, Develin, with Bolden close
WR (3): Edelman, Slater, Harry, with Dorsett close and Gordon and Thomas likely to start on suspended and PUP, respectively
TE (1): LaCosse, I could be convinced of no one. Izzo might be close to a lock as perhaps the only above-average blocker
OT (3): Wynn, Cannon, Cajuste, with a chance of adding a fourth
IOL (4): Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Froholdt, with Karras having the inside track as the 8th OL but having to compete with some guys with T flexibility
IDL (3): Pennel, Butler, Guy, with Cowart having the inside track as the fourth guy
Edge (3): Bennett, Wise, Winovich, with Simon / Rivers / Davis competing for at most 2 spots
LB (5): Hightower, Van Noy, Bentley, Roberts, King, with Sam / Hall competing for a St slot
CB (6): Gilmore, JJackson, Dawson, JMac, JJones, JWilliams, with Crossen and Webster competing for ST slot. Dawson, Jones, or JMac moving to safety means they could carry a bunch here
S (4): DMac, Chung, Harmon, Ebner, with guys like Brooks, Melifonwu, and Gant competing for ST / backup Chung
That's 39 for 50 slots (not counting the three specialists). Some fierce competition for some of these final spots, especially on ST and the back seven of the D. WR / TE could still add guys

Insightful analysis, as always.

One quibble: I think Thomas stands a good chance of returning to action earlier. I don't know anything about the specifics of this injury, but when he tore his Achilles earlier in his career it was about 6.5 months before he returned to practice and then start playing games a couple weeks later. This was roughly Michael Crabtree's timeline with that injury as well. If that timeline was replicated, he'd be able to return mid-July, have a full training camp with the team, and play Week 1.

It's not worth anything but Gronk did a promo with Edelman for the draft last week. After warning the prospective rookies that Brady and Belichick were going to be on them, Edelman outright says he thinks Gronk is coming back.

Who knows but it feels a bit like it is more than just wishcasting at this point.

At least not better than the TE in last year's class -- Izzo.
Izzo is the Allen replacement, I think. He was considered one of the best blockers in last year's class, but he had 761 yards in three years as a starter and ran a 4.89 40. If he's playing 60-70 snaps a game, we're not getting much production out of TE.

I'm guessing Izzo competes with Andrew Beck for the blocking role, LaCosse, Seferian-Jenkins, Hollister, and Stephen Anderson compete for a move TE role, and the primary TE is someone not currently on the roster.

A conditional 7th-round pick? That's slicing things very fine in terms of trade return.

Their conditional 7th hit with the Falcons and Richardson. Any return or potential return for him is nice even if it lets them select the UDFA they want like a Ken Webster or Keion Crossen.

I don't really understand the move. He showed flashes of brilliance and it's your weakest position and there's really no urgency to make the move now (if the return is so little even though it's a "profitable transaction")

I'm happy for him that he has a chance to make it close to home. (Played at Wyoming, grew up in Bend, Oregon)

You're going to have to refresh my memory on those flashes. This guy had 8 catches in two seasons.

It's taken me a couple days to do all the math, but if Froholdt makes the team and plays in at least one game, based on the prior history of NFL players from Denmark, I expect him to have a career lasting 25 seasons.

I think it's the direction they're going. They've invested in the OL and in running back. They drafted a huge WR in the first and picked up two more big guys as UDFAs. They signed LaCosse and Seferian-Jenkins, who, like Hollister, aren't much as blockers, but at least they have prototypical size, and they drafted Ryan Izzo (and grabbed Andrew Beck as a UDFA) who is a blocker. Their world doesn't have room for a 230-something-pound tight end anymore, if it ever did. Let's face it, we've all been waiting for Hernandez part two, but ever since they benched Tim Wright down the stretch in 2014, they've never found any playing time for "tight ends in name only."

I can unequivocally say that the level of my personal respect for Suh would not vary at all based on the size of his contract
I can unequivocally say that the level of my personal respect for Suh would not vary at all based on the Uniform he wears.

It would still be low, and I would still hate him.

Count me out in hoping the Pats dont make a run for him.

The definition of dirty has changed a lot. We used to see Rodney head hunt and go ‘whoa! What a hit! That’s football baby!’
I’ll grant that Suh is more noticeable now, but I wouldn’t discount Rodney and what we didn’t see. He routinely got voted as the dirtiest player by his peers, year in and out. But when he wore our laundry, we adored it. If he came to the Pats, I have trouble believing anyone wouldn’t root for him.

Honest question, as I haven’t followed the Phins or Rams, since the playoff leg whip/trip of Rodgers (which if I recall correctly wasn’t as bad on review as it appeared), has he had an egregious cheap shot since?

Rodney would light you up between Snap and Whistle.
Suh stomps on people after the whistle.

Suh also gets away with more because he is inside, instead of being in space where everyone could see what your doing.

If you like Suh or think every player plays like him so its fine or even that his dirty is just an "edge" (which is where Rodney probably was) thats fine. I dont.

Different leagues of "Dirty" IMHO.

I dislike Suh with the heat of a thousand suns. I'd literally stop watching the Pats. He's a hell of a player when there is actually football being contested, I just don't want to have to hope for his success. I sincerely hope he is one of those players that never gets a ring.

I think going after someone’s head and stomping on someone’s foot are two vastly different things. One threatens a players season or even career. The other, their life. Ymmv but if I’m choosing a dirty player I’d rather the former than the latter. And I’m not even defending Suh, I’m just saying I find it hard to believe our fan base wouldn’t embrace him.

Danny Shelton anyone? He's still only 25

I think this team is close to outstanding when you add in expected smart moves/additions by BB moving forward. I mean, the defense alone is almost there - we just need a quality fat ass DT. The D-backs are very strong, the linebackers look good, and we even have a pass rush this year. Lots of talent on offense as well. All we need are a handful of the right moves from BB to fill in.

I think this is Mike Pennel's job - he's 6'4" 332.

Yeah, this is where I fall. I think he is vastly overrated at this point, and based on the Pats O-Line talking openly and excitedly about being able to block him after the AFCCG (and our history against him), I would think BB doesn’t have too high of an opinion of him as a player.

I would still take Shelton back. He won’t cost much, he knows the system and we could use the extra big body, even with Pennel aboard. Maybe he can build on THAT ONE PLAY he made last year, in the super bowl.

I would take Suh if he was still any good.
So would every other team in the NFL.

Edit: To add some substance to my snark:
Recent cuts the Pats may be interested in for camp invites:
Josh Doctson, WR, Redskins cut . 6'4, 26 years old, red zone target that hasn't done much in the red zone. Has struggled to stay healthy.
Laquon Treadwell, WR, Vikings cut . 6'3, 23 years old, also not much production.
Shaq Lawson, DE, Bills cut . 6'3, 265, will be 25. Another Buffalo cast-off, 4 sacks in each of the past two seasons and graded out as an above average edge defender last year by PFF.
Pats have already met with OT Jared Veldheer as a potential swing tackle.
Along those lines, Titans cut OT Jack Conklin, who's had injury concerns.

Doctson, Treadwell, Lawson and Conklin weren't cut, they just didn't have their 5th year options picked up. They'll be free agents after the 2019 season.
