The toilet.
I wish players would silently accept these infractions without being "well, sure I did it, but here's some justification for it!!!"

Not expecting too much from Watson this year. Is Rudolph coming or not?
Couldn't disagree more. Sure, when athletes claim adderall or some off-the-shelf-supplement I roll my eyes, but when is the last time someone was this direct and forthcoming? Good for Ben, bummer to lose him for a chunk but hopefully the shortened season turns out to be a blessing come playoff time.

This seems strange to me. Are you saying there's never any justification that would make such actions understandable, and therefore it's a waste of breath / insult to our intelligence for them to ever try to explain themselves?

If he were appealing it or saying he didn't do it, I'd be far more skeptical. But you're basically saying context doesn't matter. It may not as far as the fact of the suspension, but it matters a lot to our assessments of his character, to his reputation.

The statement is fine. He is a class act.

But why did Watson submit to the test once retired? I’d tell these people where they could put their cup.

I don't particularly care if players stay silent or not, but I will say I don't believe anything they say. For every statement that actually is "direct and forthcoming", there is another one that seems so and probably isn't. I assume every player is trying to say whatever makes them sound best, some just get better advice than others. Watson tested positive and is out 4 games, that's the only truth we actually have.

For what it's worth, I don't find his alibi all that believable. He was prescribed testosterone, 9 days later was drug tested, and then was shocked he tested positive for testosterone? It's not impossible (and I suppose he could have memory/CTE issues after this long in the NFL), but I'm not sure why anyone would find this statement or this excuse much better than the rest.

I'd guess he hadn't submitted his retirement papers. I'm a plus one on not having any problem with him doing this and thinking 12 games is as much a blessing as anything else

Realistically, what are the odds we were getting more than 12 games out of a 38 year old TE anyway?

I'd be curious if they have to submit something post retirement to ensure they don't try to skirt tests by "retiring " knowing they will fail a test, letting it pass through their system and "returning " to the league in the same offseason

Not your best take.

1--This is hardly an excuse where he's claiming he had no idea. This is taking responsibiliry and explaining to fans who would NOT accept silence.

2--Rudolph about to sign a deal with Vikes that makes him highest paid TE in game. I feel like you should pay better attention.

Call me crazy- I've been called worse... But some small part of my already small brain is thinking that BB is perfectly fine with this, as it allows him to bring an extra body out of camp. So the 53 is 54 for the first 4 weeks. It gives him 4 more weeks to figure out the last roster spot(s). And yes, acknowledging that I am looking at this with red/white/blue glasses on...

BB knew this was happening before he signed him, so if he wasn't okay with it, the signing wouldn't have happened.

Some NFL people are saying that the Watson suspension could essentially be an advantage for New England. That BB....always finding the new market inefficiency!

That's not crazy. According to Watson, both he and the Patriots knew this was coming. So if they saw it as a disadvantage, they would not have signed him.
Or they do think that Watson missing the first four is a disadvantage but, on the whole, signing him was an advantage.

Yes, Brady and Edelman missing four games worked out swimmingly in two SB winning seasons but I don’t see that it’s necessarily a model or mitigating factor. They’d most probably choose to have Watson from the get go and would still rather have him that not given what they think they can get out of him for 12 games and the playoffs.

So Adam Humphries said Brady's age was a factor in not signing here.

Enjoy Mariotta's prime.

It's incredible that people think saying something like that reflects better on a person's character than just admitting that they were taking the highest bid.

I'll also point out that he signed a 4 year contract, and it's not unreasonable to think Brady will probably retire before the end of it.

Here's the full quote

"Obviously, he's the G.O.A.T. That's that simple," Humphries said, via Travis Haney of The Athletic. "But there's so much that factors into a decision. It was a four-year deal. Who knows how many (years) he's got left? There's a lot that goes into it.

"Obviously the chance to play with him would have been awesome, but a lot of things factor into that decision. Ultimately, I thought this was coming here to a team that was on the rise and with young talent on the offense and a really good defense. They'd had a taste of the playoffs. I felt like my need at the slot position was great. I felt like I could really contribute and start something new here."

"There were a ton of pros and not a lot of cons," Humphries said. "You have to look at both situations and a quality of life and where you're living, state taxes. A lot of things go into it when you're talking with your agents and families and stuff about it. At the end of the day, my heart wanted to be in Tennessee. I was happy to finally have that all over with and have a team I could commit to and try my best for them.

"I felt like my talents would be used best here. And New England was the same way. That would have worked, too, but at the end of the day, it was a good decision to come here."

Just curious: who would be the Vegas favorite to win more games over the next four years, Pats or Titans? I'm not certain, but would expect Pats.

Nearly 100% that if the question were "odds to win a Super Bowl over the next four years" the Pats would be much, much higher---they are the favorites to win this upcoming season and there's no way Titans (or any other non-elite team) is ever going to get much of a projection for a Super Bowl win more than a year out.

So, while I don't think it's crazy to worry about post-Brady Pats I also am not sure the "team on the rise" notion really gets him to where he may have thought it did.

Careful read of Humphries’ quote suggests he wants to be “the man” in the slot too. That would not be possible here with Edelman.

And he is from South Carolina, maybe was looking to get back nearer to home.

MA income tax rate: 5.1%
TN income tax rate: 0.0%, though you pay 6% on investments (stocks, bonds, etc)

Yeah I think the Edelman thing is probably the biggest factor.

Tennessee offered him more money. Had New England done so before he committed, he probably would have signed here.

Also don't the taxes depend on where you olay the game in a given week?
Is this true in football? I know we've had this discussion ad nauseam in baseball, but in that case, games are a very high % of team-related activities, so players are probably spending close to 50% of their work related time out of state. In football, if a player spends all week practicing in Foxborough, why should they pay that week's taxes in whatever state they travel to for sunday afternoon? Not to mention off season bonuses for team activities at their local facility, etc. Seems like some much, much, much smaller % of work time is spent out of state in football.

Players only get paid for games though. One check per week for the 16 games.

That's still only for non-bonus money though, right? Which is a much lower % of total compensation than other sports, I believe.

Per Rap - Sefarian Jenkins cut (at least for now)

The #Patriots are cutting TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, source said. He’s taking a step away for a month for personal issues and the team will release him as he does that. We’ll see if he comes back to New England or anywhere.

Fuck. With the suspension for Watson and now this, who is next?
Somebody interesting will get cut by another team during camp and/or will get traded to Pats for a 6th or 7th just before he gets cut. Right?

There were a shit ton of TEs drafted this year (none by the Pats, but that's another story). Figure most of those draftees, at least those drafted in rounds 1-5, will be shoving some veteran out of a job.

Call Minnesota and give them whatever they want for Rudolph. Brady has two-three seasons at peak performance level left, max, and is leaving at age 45 unless he changes his mind again. Get it done, Bill.

They played four games without TB12 a few years back, and that cost them jack shit in the end. The season doesn't hinge on losing ASJ and waiting until week 5 for Watson.

I didn't think ASJ was going to make the team so I'm not too worried about it. A camp body or two would be nice to save some wear-and-tear though. I'm a little bullish on LaCosse, and Izzo showed some promise before the ankle injury last summer, so I think they'll be okay until Watson comes back for week 5.

When he was signed many pegged him as training camp fodder, now we need to sell the farm to replace him?
