The Patriots were trying to trade for a receiver last year, before the trade deadline and in the offseason. Actually, here’s a name that people don’t know about: they even called trying to trade for Randall Cobb at one point. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility to think that the Patriots will still be in the market for a top-flight receiver.

This would fit with Lombardi's insistence last year that the Packers were listening to offers for Cobb. They denied that emphatically, but Lombardi stuck to his guns -- his having inside Pats info would explain that.
The Pats calling trying to trade for him is different than the Packers listening to offers for him, no?
The Cobb info is interesting but the rest is a non-answer. It's "not out of the realm of possibility". Okay, thanks.
The Pats have been rumored to have interest in Jamie Collins. It would be amazing, really, if the Pats signed him on the cheap (relatively).
It's almost impossible to track the chain of events from that trade, but the long and short of it is, it would be amazing to deal away Collins, go to three consecutive Super Bowls (winning two of them) without him, adding key pieces that came as a result of that Collins trade, only to re-sign him for a potentially below-market deal three years later.

Oh I should correct myself. Media reports have suggested/hypothesized a Pats-Collins reunion. That's more accurate.

I’d be all over the defensive equalivant of an LGBT-style reunion. Maybe Collins has grown up a bit after getting paid. I can’t imagine he’d cost a ton.
"Top-flight receiver" is also a pretty subjective term. You really have to squint to classify Randall Cobb in that fashion. I know, he's been on my fantasy team since 2015 (and has averaged fewer than 50 yards per game in that time period).
Sounds to me like Flowers is coming back. Otherwise, very weird to be coming out and saying that after the franchise tag period has passed. You'd think if he was leaving, mentally he would have moved on, instead of including himself with the Patriots still. I feel like the Pats goal this offseason will be to sign Flowers, trade for 1-2 top WR, draft a TE, convince Gronk to come back and effectively run it back with the same defense and offense + more firepower.
There are a lot of guys who want to re-sign until they see the dollar figures other teams are waving around. I won't rule it out, but I'm not as optimistic as you are.
Just to clarify, the TBirds game was Saturday, before the deadline. Not to say that it’s meaningless for him to have said this publicly, of course.
Neither am I. Let Flowers walk, have Bennett contribute, and grab a nice 3/4th round comp pick in 2020.
P.S. Now let's go sign Weddle. He was almost a Patriot before.

I love Trey Flowers. He was the one guy of all their non ST free agents I wanted them to keep. I think most of us were in the same boat. I think though that instead of just replacing Flowers they can drive and upgrade the depth around him like with Bennett. Upgrade the Simon spot. Upgrade Adam Butler's spot. Upgrade, if you can, Malcom Brown's spot. With 2-3 upgrades on the front line that makes Flowers leaving less painful. Also, the draft beckons.

Amendola is 33, turning 34 halfway through next season. He had a slightly down year in 2018, probably within range for "noise" but pretty much everything was down a bit.
His contract had 2018 fully guaranteed but 2019 fully not-guaranteed, so at a $6M option, the Dolphins balked. I don't know what number we'd be willing to bring him back here for, but for me it's probably not north of half of that. Even Chris Hogan was at $4 AAV, Edelman is at $5.5.

I'm going to read that as "don't count me off this team yet, even with MB arriving".
Question on Marty B: if he were to come back and join the Pats, would it hurt their comp formula for 2020? IIRC the Pats released him a year ago... so unsure how that factors in.

Oh that's kind of a bummer. Not that they needed him, but there was a real comfort level there.
10/10 Lions gave him more money than what the Pats may have been willing to. Best wishes to Amendola. Disappointed but can't fault him at all.

Danny Amendola was a very good playoff performer, but he was also unreliable health wise and averaged 46 receptions for 476 yards and 2 TDs in the regular season. I'd take him back at the right price, but if this was his market, there's no way I'd be willing to come close to those numbers.
That's a massive overpay. He was never coming back to New England on those numbers. Patriots can do better for cheaper.
Agreed. I would like to have had him back but not for that price. They just won the SB without him so it's not like he's needed. I'm sure Brady wouldn't have minded having him back in the fold though. Oh well, good luck in Detroit, Danny. Beat up on GB please.
My fear is that's an indicator of the market, and guys like Crowder, Humphries, Agholor, Tate, and Dorsett will be too expensive, too.
This is why I love BB's pivot towards trading for guys he likes over using free agency. It seems other teams haven't properly calibrated to adjusting draft value for proven talent on good contracts. Your point made on the value of 5th rounders, which was really eye opening, nails this. Ultimately I'm convinced we see the Patriots trade for a WR (or 2), my guess is still AJ Green but we'll see.
A WR corps of Edelman, Dorsett (maybe re-signed at a low cost because he hasn't produced like a guy who will make much), Patterson, Green, Hogan, and, say, Berrios...that would probably be sufficient.
I think Green's too pricey at almost $12 MM. They need to get younger, too. My guess is instead of trading for a $16 MM player making $12 MM (Green) they'd trade for a $9 MM player making $5 MM or something.
They also have a penchant for acquiring guys who've killed them in the past. Players who'd fit that formula and are / might be available would be Agholor, Devante Parker, Jermaine Kearse, and Keelan Cole.
EDIT: also, I haven't heard anything about Green being available. I get why people think he could be, but I tend to doubt it based on the way Cincy does business.
Where are you going to find the cap space for Green's salary and re-signing Patterson, Hogan, and Dorsett?
My guess is they trade for an established starter, sign a cheap reclamation project/veteran coming off an injury like Kevin White or Demaryius Thomas and draft a receiver in the top 3 rounds.
I assume that Dorsett, Hogan, and Patterson won't cost much of anything. Who's going to give these guys any real money?
I've learned to expect the unexpected with the Patriots. I'm wondering if they'll go in a direction with a significant move that isn't even on anyone's radar.
I'm fully expecting the unexpected, probably in the form of another trade.
