Walking Soto when you had the LOOGY ready was bad enough. Walking him and then sticking with Kelly with Jansen also ready? Just brutal.

This playoffs reminds me of the NCAA tournament. Lots of fun in the early rounds but then the top seed cleans up against the minnows in the end. Yankees have clear sailing.

To be fair to Roberts, Jansen was pretty terrible down the stretch. Sticking with JoKe there after he got that eighth inning wasn't great but I get his aversion to automatically going to Jansen there.

The Dodgers simply can't find the right combination of players to get them over the October hump. Absolutely insane that they are going to lose this.

Exactly, they're one more pants-filling by an Astros starter away from breezing to a title.

Meh. Last year, posters here had the Yankees beating the Sox and the Astros beating the Sox and the Dodgers beating the Sox even before the first game of each series had been played. Baseball is weird and less talented teams can take down more talented ones if the right guys are hot.

I think it would be hard to bring him back after this. This is rarified Grady area.
It's not just Grady, its worse. Grady at least had the best pitcher of his generation on the mound saying he could pitch more. This is Joe fucking Kelly. There should have been anyone warming and ready to go in case your pitcher gets into trouble in the last potential inning of the last potential game of the year.

Weren’t the Sox favored over the Dodgers last year after (impressively) dispatching the Yankees and the Astros?

The Nats will absolutely lie down for the Cardinals, guaranteed.
I don't know. This Washington team seems to have something other Nationals teams did not in terms of grinding out games.

That said, lets see what Doolittle can do here. This game is still in question.

The Yankees may avoid the Astros and Dodgers.
After they knock off the Twins, Rays and Nationals, 20 years from now, no chinned, yellow toothed, douchebag beard wearing Gashouse Gorilla fans will fondly look back on the 2019 title as according to them, they beat the 27 Yankees, 75 Reds and 86 Mets to win it.

That may well be correct. But my point is that you can't really say that the Yankees or anyone else has a clear path to anything. These games are tough, the strategery is often lost as evidenced by this game and anything can happen in a seven game series. Like a journeyman 1B/DH becoming a World Series MVP.

He has other pitchers. I assume his explanation will be some kind of greedy "Joe did a great job in the 9th and I thought we could give our offense another inning to win the game."

Also his strange obsession with giving Kershaw postseason moments is up there. No one would question why Kershaw didn't come into this game.

That bullpen going into the playoffs was a tire fire.

And Kershaw wasn't on that staff.

But other than that, you're 100% correct.
What the hell are you talking about? The 2018 Sox bullpen was fourth in the AL in ERA despite a ton of innings from flotsam and jetsam like Thornburg, Scott, and an injured Pomeranz. The core six guys (all you need for a playoff roster) of Kimbrel, Barnes, Brasier, Kelly, Hembree, and Workman was very good. Anyone who actually looked at the bullpen rather than listened to the "hot takes" media pundits knew that.

I am not defending Roberts there - its pretty clear he stuck with Kelly far too long. As a life-long fan of his, I am also not happy at the ire he is deservedly going to receive.
