My goodness. Got home 30 minutes ago and didn’t realize this game was still on, or that the fantasy matchup featuring my Jimmy vs his Carson that I was 97% likely to win before I left the house came down to a 3 point victory for me.

Congrats Seattle. Thanks for not winning on another Carson TD.

Why do they keep trying to send Mahomes to Mexico City? Is it going to get moved to LA again?

San Francisco was in a virtual can’t lose position. Run on first down and get it down to a minute. Then pass on second down. If you get the first, keep passing. At any point, on any third and long, just take another 40 seconds and lock up the tie.

I hope they lose the division.

Not sure about 8-0, but in 1990 the Giants and 49ers were both 10-0 and lost. They played each other in the 12th game. Could have been 11-0 vs 11-0 for the first time ever.
Thanks. Later, in the NFC championship game between the two, a Roger Craig fumble put an end to the 49ers quest for a threepeat, which no team has yet to accomplish.

Belicheck definitely plays for the tie in that spot, right?
I think you play for the win but only after taking a loss off the table. Run on first down and get it down to a minute. Now you go. But on any third and long you can run a draw play. Maybe you get lucky and get the first and keep going. But if not run it down to essentially the end. The 49ers were in a great position. When can you virtually ever be in a no lose position? (Where a tie puts you in commanding position to avoid a wild card.) Plus, they are a good running team. Run on first down and let that play dictate what you do. They even had a time out.

Yeah, God knows I have some *thorough* criticisms of the NFL, but if you couldn't enjoy watching that game, I question why you bother turning on any NFL game in the first place. That was as good as a regular season game gets.
Well, the outcome was in doubt so there was tension. Lots of poor play + Tessitore made it hard tho. Whoever said he announces as if he’s auctioning cattle was spot on.

Nobody is saying it was a beautifully played game. It was an exciting game between two contenders. As putrid as it was fundamentally, it was fun to watch.
People seem to always conflate "the defense made a play" with "the offense played poorly". Like, we can't give both sides credit for executing well, so with a close game, we have to say that they both sucked. It's bizarre.

Some people here do that in baseball too - it wasn't a great game, first one pitcher sucked, then the other pitcher sucked, and they took turns sucking until it ended up a 9-8 final with 6 lead changes. Well, um, the hitters had something to do with that too - maybe they're all really good at their jobs, and just, both sides can't win?

"putrid fundamentally", come the hell on. I saw a lot of great blocking, a lot of sure tackling, inventive play design without anyone going nuts, a lot of good coverage, some brilliant line play (Clowney most of all), a lot of good throws from both sides, a lot of good runs, some clutch plays by both sides... and one absolutely fugly FG attempt that would have won it for the team that ended up losing. I didn't see any totally blown coverages, I didn't see abject stupidity from either coach until, arguably, the last few minutes of OT, and unless you want to count Bourne having stone hands I didn't see a ton of execution failures either. If you saw "putrid fundamentals", I'd like to know what a well-played game would look like to you, because there must be hardly any.

Well, the outcome was in doubt so there was tension. Lots of poor play + Tessitore made it hard tho. Whoever said he announces as if he’s auctioning cattle was spot on.
No defense of Tessitore though, for sure. The sooner we get @ConigliarosPotential calling games on our TVs, the sooner everyone here is happier.

Has there been 5 possessions in an OT game since they went 10 minutes? This is crazy.

Go deep Russ
Answered my own question. 34 total OT games since the rule changed for 2017 (so 2 1/2 seasons now)

Baltimore at Cleveland on 10/7/18 had 5 possessions (Cle wins 12-9)
Jacksonville at NY Jets on 10/1/17 had 6 possessions (NYJ win 23-20)
Pittsburgh at Cleveland on 9/9/18 had 8 possessions! Game ended in a 21-21 tie. The possessions (Cle first) ended with punt, punt, punt, missed FG, punt, fumble, missed FG, end of game

Also, 6 OT games have been won on the first possession.

Didn't see the game, but if I were SF I would have been really tempted to run the ball on 3rd and 10 and just effectively concede the tie.
