Here's the Chargers seasons since 2000:
Year W L
2019 4 6
2018 12 4
2017 9 7
2016 5 11
2015 4 12
2014 9 7
2013 9 7
2012 7 9
2011 8 8
2010 9 7
2009 13 3
2008 8 8
2007 11 5
2006 14 2
2005 9 7
2004 12 4
2003 4 12
2002 8 8
2001 5 11
2000 1 15

I'd say they were less of a one hit wonder and had several decent teams during the late 2000's. The Chargers 2018 seems to be the outlier. So I disagree with the one year wonder notion unless you mean this decade.

I can't get the alignment quite right, sorry about that.
God bless the '06 Chargers and Troy Brown. If only the Pats weren't so classless.

Pretty sure the one hit wonder was in relation to 2018
He wasn't too specific. Well, its not really a one hit wonder... Some of their other years were similar but they lost some close ones so you could argue the other way. They've been a decent team the past decade but not Super Bowl caliber except maybe 2018.

It was obvious he was taking about 2018. They were a very good team last year that pretty much all national media thought would beat the Pats in the divisional round. They were decent in 2017, they aren’t very good in 2019, but they were a 12 win team last year that beat the Chiefs and many thought would be in the AFCCG. It’s not that hard to piece together. He wasn’t talking about the 2006 team. He was taking about the team with the second best record in the conference last year than many projected would be very good again this year.

Edit: and the 2018 Chargers are the very definition of a one hit wonder. A single good season among a series of bad seasons.

Hey man as a first time poster I don't really appreciate your obnoxiousness. Is this what people do here? They did "decent" in 2017, with several close losses. The ball bounced in their favor in 2018, and this year almost every loss this year has been single possessions. They are a better team than their record indicates. But they certainly aren't "definition of wonder hit wonders". If you can't have a discussion you probably aren't cut out for this site.

It's Friday, get some R&R because you seem really wound up. Thanks

Yes my 21000 posts clearly show I am not cut out for SoSH.

As an outside party to this, are you saying that Tim’s “it’s obvious...” sentence was a personal attack? I think that’s a stretch. If that’s not the complaint, he attacked the post and not the poster. He explained why he thought as he did. There were no ad hominem attacks or misrepresentation of your point. So, yes, that’s how SoSH rolls.

Nor was the fact that he was referring to the 2018 Chargers.
Yes, that much was obvious, my question was rhetorical as a way of getting into the various misadventures of the Chargers in the Rivers era. Which MBH has provided further context for.

To me, they're the ultimate regression-to-the-mean team. When their roster talent says they should be SB contenders, they underperform*. When their roster talent says they should suck, somehow they pull 7-to-9 wins out of nowhere, with Rivers going apeshit a few times.

Fun fact that they reminded us of frequently around last year's Divisional game: Rivers has never beaten Brady. He beat Cassel in 2008, and San Diego Drew Brees beat Brady in 2005, but Rivers is 0-8 when Tom Brady is suited up on the other sideline.

* (or have a truly great team, but get beat by Troy Brown - there was a good oral history of that game poking around somewhere a few months ago)

Lots to unpack here regarding the Chargers. Love this site.

There is a case to be made for SD to be one of the most snake bitten franchises in recent memory, from kicker woes, Keenan Allen injury luck in his prime (which is quickly fading), offensive line issues, relocation and their franchise qb being a contemporary to TFB. They're the coulda woulda shoulda team. Looks like late 90's Sox if you squint.

Edit: tl;dr they might suck or be unlucky, not sure.

Isn’t the real question whether Ladainian Tomlinson really has his own signature Arby’s brand? I still can’t tell if that’s real or parody.

This is a good post. Your subsequent ones were not. Please leave the modding to the mods.

Doing something and doing it well are two different things, its not that hard to piece together.
Whether or not you got it right in this particular case, I like the cut of your jib.

Plus you brought data to the table with your first post, which always wins points.

Jacoby Brissett downgraded to out... it'll be Brian Hoyer against the Dolphins.

Fair enough. I have no problem backpedaling on that one. Cheers all around, as my first post ever I overreacted. No harm no foul (hopefully). I'll try not to be an idiot going forward.

Trying and doing are two different things. When you try you hope. When you do you succeed.

Too soon?

My apologies. More of the country is getting Saints vs. Dirty Birds than the Battle for NJ

After today, with Finlay, Driskel, and Hoyer starting, that will be a total of 51 different QBs have started games this year. Pretty amazing in only 10 weeks.

It’s an interesting thought. In baseball, I’m pretty used to these kinds of “loser” teams making a WS run at some point. In football? Not so much.
And the thing is, the Packers, Vikings and Bears have all had fallow periods indecent years ... and yet the Lions never take advantage. Even before Stafford's injury this season, they should have beaten the Packers and probably should have hung on against the Chiefs. They're just the team to which something odd always seems to happen.

At this point I am expecting Drew Brees to yell CUT if his highly choreographed, camera ridden pregame hype circle isn’t blocked correctly.

Still better than fucking Ray Lewis, though.

‘The energy down here IS electric.’

Yeah, I suspect literally everyone on both the Jets and Giants sidelines are worried about getting fired.

Do I watch a thing of beauty in the Mahomes offense (which I would root for fail), or see if the Browns can do us a solid?

Chubb is too much. Been watching Jim Brown film?
