2019 NFL: Trade Deadline Thread

This year's trade deadline is 10/29, so there are four more weeks left in the season before then.

Assuming tonight's game does not end in a tie, there will be 6 winless teams looking at lost seasons, plus two more with only one win. Who from those teams might be available to the Pats to fill holes?

The holes that I see the Pats likely needing outside help, in order of critical need:
  1. TE. I'll take a move TE or a blocker.
  2. Center. Someone who can be an upgrade on Karras also means that they can put Karras back at swing interior backup thereby improving depth as well.
  3. LT. If Wynn can't recover from his turf toe, this moves to the top of the list. It would be great if the new LT could also become the swing OT if/when Wynn returns.
  4. WR. If Henry can't return or if Gordon has a relapse or if Edelman can't breathe, this too moves up the list.
  5. K. Unless Ghost can remember how to kick straight.
THere's not a whole lot of cap room, so there will likely need to be other moves to free up space to make anybody earning over vet minimum fit, which adds to the challenge. OTOH, if they wait until 10/28 to make the trade, they are only on the hook for 50% of the nominal salary.

AJ Green is a free agent at the end of the year and won't be back for a few weeks, would the Bengals entertain trading him for a mid round pick? What would the salary implications be? We know they won't be contenders, we know the Patriots have a need for talent at WR, barring Harry surprising to the upside.

Green will be owed the prorated portion of a close to $12 million base salary. So, unless the Bengals are taking a salary dump onto their roster(they have $14 million of space per OTC) there's no shot.

We have 2 WRs also due back in a few weeks that won't have to learn the playbook from scratch.

If Atl drops a couple more, would Austin Hooper be worth inquiring about? Looks affordable according to overthecap.
Sure, but if he's cheap and productive, I'm not sure Atlanta has any desire to trade him.

I saw Wynn at Duron Harmon's autism charity event tonight - moving fine with no boot/crutch/limp. Not a definitive sign by any means, but better than nothing,

If a trade for Diggs is too costly in terms of picks and/or cap space, may I suggest going for the current #1 DVOA-ranked TE & last year's Pro Bowler (replaced Ertz) Austin Hooper from Atlanta:

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/te/2019
The Stanford grad is projected to finish in the top 10 by Scout.com:

https://www.scout.com/football/nfl/news/austin-hooper-is-projected-to-be-the-8-te-the-rest-of-the-2019-season-behind-greg-olsen-and-ahead-of-will-dissly/
Importantly, he's on the final year of his 4-year contract. Signed back in 2016, this year's cap hit is only $2.2m:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/atlanta-falcons/austin-hooper-19035/
Of course, Falcons are still run by Dimitroff. He said this on a recent ESPN article regarding an extension:

"Austin is one of the next important players in line," Dimitroff told ESPN. "That said, however, we are not sure of the timetable."

Ryan & the once-vaunted offense has gone south. Even with Hooper, Jones, Sanu, and Ridley on board, they only rank #21 in offensive DVOA (#19 passing). I think we've all heard about a potential fire sale if things continue to falter for Atlanta.

Future cap space-wise, they really don't have to pay anyone on the offensive side. On the other side of the ball however, they do have a couple of key pieces due for an extension including Vic Beasley:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/atlanta-falcons/yearly/cap/
What is Hooper worth to the Falcons? On one hand, they may not want to pay for a long-term deal if the front office decides a tear-down is in order, especially with a still-stacked WR group. However, they do not have anyone to replace Hooper on the roster and did not draft a TE in 2019.

The TE position is absolutely the worst positional group on the team. Watson is still missing from practice and not a long-term solution. Pats did not draft a TE on one of the richest drafts in recent memory. Even if Gronk comes back, that's also for this year.

Even if BB overpays, Hooper may be the best value if a trade can happen with the old NE-hand Dimitroff.

If the Patriots acquire a big name wide receiver, like Diggs, they would need to open up cap space by pushing cap hits into 2020. The smaller that 2020 cap room figure gets, the harder it would be to bring back Brady. D.McCourty, Van Noy, Slater, Dorsett, Gordon, Collins, Shelton

Not sure I follow Miguel's logic. The current CBA is valid through the end of the 2020 season, so the new CBA would not go into effect until 2021. If the current CBA calls for minimum player salaries to increase, I would expect the cap to increase by a similar amount percentage wise.

We'll always remember the Diggs Era as the time when BigSoxFan walked around with his pants only pulled up on one leg

I would rather a solid TE than another WR, but I’m happy with any tool.
Me too. Izzo was supposed to be a decent blocker but he has struggled there. I could see them being fine with Watson as a receiving tight end but upgrading their blocking tight end.

What would people think about Tyler Eifert as a target? His cap hit is very reasonable, is only signed for this year, but has been a victim of the injury bug lately.
By "lately", were you alluding to the fact he has played in 47 of 100 possible games in his career, including 18 since 2015? He can barely stay on the field.

If they felt they needed a blocking TE wouldn't they just sign Dwayne Allen?

La Canfora says Patriots are "deeply looking for pass catching help" and floats A.J. Green & Eifert as possible targets:

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/teams-willing-to-trade-first-round-pick-for-a-j-green-when-healthy-but-skeptical-whether-bengals-will-make-a-deal/
"Rival general managers I spoke to agreed that the Bengals could get a first-round pick for Green, 31, if the acquiring team was able to negotiate a new deal for him and if Green returns from his foot injury soon. It is highly unlikely that Green signs an extension with the Bengals, I'm told. League sources said the Saints and Patriots are among the teams most deeply looking for pass catching help, and both would have interest in oft-injured tight end Tyler Eifert as well, who is making just $1 million this season."

While watching this I thought...

AP would be a great trade/release pick up candidate if any of the RBs get/continues to be hurt.

Although struggling this year, he rushed for 1,024 yards in 2018 to go along with 20 receptions on 26 targets.

We know BB loves to pick up once top-tier vets on their sunset years. Potatoes are obviously not going anywhere. HCoNEP has expressed admiration for the future HoF RB on numerous occasions. AP himself said he wanted to play for another 4 years just last year and would obviously like a chance to go to a Super Bowl.

AP would fit in well with McD's schemes and I would love to see him in a Pats uniform.

yeah, not sure RB is an area of need for the Pats. Plus I mean, you take premium talent where you can get it, and AP still has that strength and elusiveness, but his VORRB is getting pretty small.

If we're gonna blow our remaining cap or whatever dollars we can create by can-kicking, I'd much rather it be on the OL. Yesterday we had miserable OL play in the first half and we looked likelier to get Brady killed than confidently march down the field (leaving aside the one drive where we did just that), whereas in the second half we had merely mediocre OL play and basically rolled what was a pretty good Washington defensive line.
