So, I’m guessing the Hill situation didn’t make Hunt consider selling the team to The Rock.

If he doesn’t want to play in SD without new contract why would he want to play in NE?

More to the point, why would they want to lessen Michel and White's playing time for Gordon

They could run more 2-back sets in which 1 or both are big time pass catching threats. Gordon has had at least 33 catches in all 4 seasons of his career. Last year in 1-back sets when Michel was in it was almost always a run and when White is in it was almost always a pass.

@RedOctober3829 i like what you’re thinking but I would hope that Sony can be more of that guy this year. Year 1 coming out it would have taken a lot for him to make contributions in the passing game. He looks a lot more likely to have an impact there this year based on what we saw in the pre-season and buzz around the team. I’d rather stand pat and use resources elsewhere like TE or OL (if they aren’t set with the guys they got last week).

Can't blame him at all with that contract.

"Uh, sorry, coach, I can't stay around. Something came up. "

If Hoyer had that kind of value, why couldn't they have traded him? Indy must have been bidding against others to get to three years...

Many NFL execs just don't do trades, except on draft day. There could have been multiple bidders, plus the Colts had to bid against Hoyer just sitting at home.

Etling is on Atlanta's PS, and the Eagles grabbed Lauletta. Pats need to find their own PS QB.

They probably wanted to give Hoyer his choice of destinations. And as a result, he also got a much bigger deal.

Colts deal means Pats are in the clear for Hoyer’s $1.5M since his contract had offset language.

It’s the worst of all possible seller’s markets. That won’t stop some yahoos from saying the Pats played this wrong.

And, “can’t blame him?” Really??

Sorry, but when your ass is cut, you owe no loyalties, much less when someone gives you a $9 MM guarantee. What as he supposed to do, beg for a position on the Patriots PS? Cuz it’s all about us??

It's getting more and more profitable to be a former Patriots backup QB. If Brissett has a halfway decent season he may get, if not Garoppolo money, at least Andy Dalton money. The lowest FA starting-QB deal of the last 5 years is, I think, Dalton's 6 yrs / $16M AAV. Bridgewater is a backup at 1yr/$7.25M. That ain't bad at all.

Someone get the news to Matt Cassel.

My read was that the poster of that statement was deliberately understating it for effect, and agrees with you - especially given the sarcastic statement that followed.

Maybe have another cup of coffee, sit outside for a bit and see if your mood turns around.

Yes I understand that they want to get Sony Michel more involved in the passing game. I just think that the combination of the talent level and the value of the contract that Melvin Gordon would substantially improve this team and not cripple them financially. I know that RB is a position of strength right now but we all know Michel's knee is going to be an issue at some point this season. I just think a player available with the talent level of Gordon for 1 year at just over $5 million does not come around often and it's too good not to at least take a look at doing.

He may never be better than replacement level, but Brissett was always a very good investment for the Colts, now more than ever.

You could argue that the trade worked well for both teams - Dorsett has helped the Pats win games sine the trade, and Brissett wouldn't have.

The Colts also have to spend money to hit the 89% requirement so it’s possible that this offer was far better than anything he was seeing elsewhere.

The Chargers are not going to give Gordon away for Rex Burkhead. Just like Washington hasn’t done with Trent Williams. Just like the Viking weren’t going to hand us Adam Theilen. Teams with problematic player situations don’t just throw their hands up and dump players to the defending Super Bowl champs.

If it's 3/12 with 9 guaranteed, then it's not 3 years, it's somewhere near 2/9 with a team option on year three for around 3M. I wish the NFL media would stop reporting contracts the way they do.

Since the Colts wanted him for two years, they probably didn't see any value in trading anything for him on a 1/2.85M contract. They just add a second year for 6Mish, get a team option for a third year at short money and give up nothing. That makes much more sense for a team way under the salary cap. They have money to spend anyway, and keep an extra asset that they didn't have to trade away.

I think @RedOctober3829 suggested "Wouldn't it be the most Belichick move ever to trade a 3rd rd pick and Burkhead for Melvin Gordon", meaning it wouldn't be LA just "giving Gordon away for Burkhead". They'd also get a 3rd round pick in the deal. I don't think it would happen, but Rex plus a third is pretty different from just Rex.

I think it's more realistic (though still not to me realistic) to propose a 3rd plus Damien Harris rather than Burkhead. That at least has a viable theory for the Chargers---get cost-controlled replacement (though they have something in plcae already) plus the equivalent of the comp pick for Gordon leaving.

I don't think Pats would do that regardless...

That would be a significant over pay for a good but far from elite level talent at the most replaceable position.
A third is probably fair value for Gordon given the contract he is going to expect.

How is it stupid? If the Chargers aren't going to re-sign Gordon, why wouldn't they try to trade him now? He's on a cheap contract(versus tagging him after this year with a higher price tag and trying to trade him). Gordon is not going to sit out the year because his contract will just toll until next year so there's no point to doing that. I think a 3rd round pick plus a replacement at RB is fair value for a player with 1 year left on his deal. If you want to sub in Harris, that would be an overpay in my mind since Harris has multiple years of cheap control.

If Gordon is not going to sit out the year for the Patriots then the Chargers don't have to worry about him sitting out for them.

Even if they choose to trade him, it's not close to fair value. What team in the league wouldn't trade a 3rd round pick plus their 3rd or 4th RB for Gordon right now? Especially as you point out that there would likely be a 3rd round compensation pick for him walking anyway.

A 1st or 2nd round pick for Gordon? Yeah right. This isn't a franchise LT or a QB.

I have Zeke and Gordon in my dynasty league. I’m not amused.
You and me both, and I'm ready to kill someone. I also have Davlin Cook, Jared Goff/Carson Wentz, Jared Cook/Kyle Rudolph. I'm weak at WR though, mostly because I have TY Hilton, and Luck retired (also have Robert Woods, Jarvis Landry and Will Fuller).

This offseason has not been good to my team, which should be in a position to dominate. I'd rather have had Gronk/Luck, because at least you can drop them and pick someone up. You can't do that with Zeke/Gordon, because they'll eventually be coming back, hopefully...

Far from elite? He's one of the best RBs in the game. NFL 100(which is not a measure of fantasy value) has him 5th.

Well, it’s dumb because:

- Gordon probably won’t play for the full season unless he gets paid. And the Pats aren’t going to pay a RB huge dollars, particularly to a position of strength.
- Gordon has been a sub-4.0 per attempt every year except for last year, where he was an excellent 5.1. Are we betting that 2018 is something different?
- Gordon’s greatest strength is in the passing game where the Pats are stocked with White and Burkhead, and that’s before considering any improvement from Sony. Who happens to be in a rookie deal.
- These holdouts make sense from a market correction standpoint for RBs, but the Pats just haven’t invested huge dollars there. The last time the Pats paid “big” money for an outside player in this situation was Revis. But CB is fundamentally less replaceable than RB.
- When was the last time the Pats went out a grabbed a team’s marquee skill player? Randy Moss? I just don’t see them playing Madden when their entire philosophy has been much more deliberate.
- That’s to say nothing of how the Chargers should handle the situation. Why do they have to do something now? They have other guys on their roster and can easily wait until some contender loses their bell cow for the season.

But aside from that, maybe we can try to get Mahomes when he’s got a year left of his rookie deal.

No kidding. The Seahawks just got Clowney for a 3rd rounder and a couple warm bodies. I think the Chargers would move Gordon for a 3rd and a capable backup running back. If Gordon sits out the year, doesn't he have to play next year under the same contract anyway? I just doubt the Chargers would do business with the Pats.

I think this would be the rare bad trade for both teams.

The Chargers would want to use Gordon as their lead 20 opportunities(rushes/targets) a game guy as they intend to be a contender, and they'd be dealing him for a role player and a same round pick they'd likely get as a comp pick if he leaves after his final season there.

The Patriots would be acquiring a guy expecting to be a lead back, on a team that spent a first round pick on their 1st/2nd down guy last year, and has an elite 3rd down back. Even player for player, while Gordon is a better player than Rex, Rex is probably a better fit on their current roster.

The two teams don't match up for me.
