I would agree that Okafor + Clark + Honey Badger > Houston + Ford + Berry for the coming season.

That said, they are already minus Hunt, and if they are minus Hill, overall they look potentially worse. Of course I also thought they'd be worse in 2018 than 2017 due to the first year learning curve for Mahomes so it shows you what I know.

One thing I think this does show is that they view their "window" as the next two years before Mahomes has to get paid. Might as well load up as best they can and go for it because it's going to be much tougher sledding when he is making $35-40M.
They also lost Stephen Nelson, probably the best CB in a pretty mediocre group, along with Orlando Scandrick, who is a JAG but at least started seven games for them at CB. Their CB depth chart is a brutal list of "Who????" guys: Charvarius Ward, Kendall Fuller, Bashaud Breeland, Keath Reaser, and Tremon Smith.

Many of their moves seem to be motivated by the schematic switch as well as an attempt to get better against the run, which was a huge weakness last year. But if in changing things around they end up reducing the effectiveness of their pass rush, which was elite in 2018, that secondary could really get exposed.

Yeah they may have overreacted to the AFCCG (and the loss in NE). Yes their run D was horrible and overall their D was really bad but like you said the one thing they could do was rush the passer (but not in the AFCCG). Now they might not even be as good at that and the secondary could be worse.

Which AFC contenders have improved this offseason?

Cleveland.
Jaguars - Foles may not be the answer, but he's better than Bortles.
Debatable whether they're a contender but I think the Ravens are a better team than last year.

I don't know if they improved, but the Colts are definitely poised to improve in the very near future.

As to the Chiefs, I had read a comment on PFT that got me thinking. I can't easily verify that this is true but it kind of makes sense. The idea is that they let Houston and Ford go to free up money to sign Hill long term, but then Hill's latest incident came out and they were screwed. So the trade for Clark while it certainly appears to be an overpay can make sense if you match DEs and WRs as similarly valued. For example, if you squint, the Clark trade and the Clark contract are both kind of in line with both the Browns trade for OBJ and OBJ's contract.

Good question. I'd definitely agree that the Colts have improved. The Texans and Chargers essentially treaded water in free agency (minor losses or net downgrades when all moves are considered), which is a good situation when you're already a pretty good team and still have a draft class to add.

I think the Steelers clearly got significantly worse and both the Chiefs and Patriots also got worse but with the extent of that decline highly dependent on what happens with Tyreek Hill and whether Gronk returns.

I'm not sure either Baltimore or Cleveland are true contenders but the former got a bit worse and the latter obviously got a lot better.

Hard to classify Cleveland or Jacksonville as contenders. I agree on the Colts I think.
The Colts have a good-to-great QB, some talented playmakers, and a solid o-line, and lots of cap space. I can see that they might be trying to build slowly now to put themselves in position to take advantage of a post-Brady/post-Belichick AFC in a couple of years. What I would be worried about is that extra cap space and how it will be impacted when the CBA runs out. As I understand it teams have to use a specific percentage of the cap space over a four year period. Unused cap-space on an annual basis rolls over into the next year, but it needs to be used within that four year period or there's a penalty. So, it seems like the Colts will have to spend money next year, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I don't consider an ideal position to be in. They might end up having to spend more $$ on lesser talent just to increase their four-year spending. Again, not a bad thing, more just kind-of getting put into a position where they have to spend money.

I agree with Jacksonville. I probably putting too much into their 2017, but I have no idea how you can not classify Cleveland as a Contender. Finished 7-8-1 last season with a rookie QB and went 5-2 in their last 7 games. They may be the third best team in the AFC.

Justin Tucker... Paid
Ravens are giving kicker Justin Tucker a four-year, $23.05 million extension, including $12.5 million fully guaranteed in the first two years and an $8 million signing bonus, per source. All records for a kicker. Tucker tied to Baltimore through the 2023 season.

Weather sucks for draft night in Nashville. Thunderstorms could force the outdoor draft to be halted.

Listening to this DA answer questions its obvious that he thinks Hill committed but the crime but he doesn't have the evidence to bring charges. Probably because Espinal isn't cooperating or is trying to take the blame herself.

No charges against Hill or the GF - because the DA cannot determine who committed the crime, despite the fact that a crime was committed.
That is absolutely horrible.

Either way the child should end up in protective custody, right? Clearly he's endangered either with the abuser or one covering up for the abuser.

It is really, really hard to read the stories on this one and not think about Hill's history of domestic abuse. We do not have all the facts (and likely never will) but this may be the rare case that Roger's unfettered authority actually allows him to do justice (and yes, I don't know with 100% certainty that suspending Hill is actually justice here)

Also, the Chiefs have to ask themselves whether they want this guy representing their team at this point. Failing to meet the standard for criminal prosecution is by no means an exoneration

Rumor is that the QB the Redskins want is Daniel Jones. As usual, Dan Snyder wants a QB but much of the coaches/scouts are against trading up for one.
Be wary. This whole thing could be a work to pressure the Cardinals to back off on their asking price for Rosen.

Considering they just traded for Clark, but released Hunt, it appears the official stance of the Chiefs front office is “pics or it didn’t happen.”

I don't know if that's fair. It's probably more accurate to say the stance is something like "what happens in college, stays in college."

Redskins get: #3 pick in 2019 draft
Jets get: #15 pick, WSH 2019 2nd, WSH 2020 1st, WSH 2020 2nd
It would be to trade up to get a QB at #3 such as Daniel Jones.
They probably wouldn't need to go that high to get Jones, but it is Daniel Snyder and he might as well mortgage his franchise for a terrible young QB.

Whenever I see this thread refreshed, I'm hoping that there's news of Josh Rosen heading to the Pats, in something like 32 and 73 for Rosen and 65...

Daniel Jones is going to be a bust. This is freaking hilarious. When I close my eyes and stroke my Kraft he reminds me of watching a Manning.

I would be shocked if Rosen is traded for anything better than a top 50 pick. If he had that type of market he’d already be gone. Has there been any credible source so far quoting better?

I do think he is on a different team by Friday evening and I hope it’s the Pats.

I would really like it if the Jets were not to make such a winning trade.

Yeah maybe. Our GM sucks. It sounds like a good trade but he can’t bomb number 3 as easily as he can bomb those other picks.

This guy can’t ID talent for shit. Maybe Gase and Williams can and the trade would be promising.

I'd like to see NE offer #73 and #243 for Rosen. I'd rather have four years of Rosen for that price than five years of Jones or Grier or four years of Finley/Rypien/etc.

Can't explain that other than it's Daniel Snyder.
That’s my tell that this is a work. Floating Snyder so prominently. The Jets and Skins have mutual interest in floating this.

Only caveat is if Murray doesn’t go #1. In that event, all bets are off.

This trade could be the anti Steven Covey, think lose-lose. The Skins will pay a lot for a mediocre QB and the Jets will blow 4 picks.

If Murray doesn't go #1, the 49ers have to be thinking "JACKPOT!" and trading the fuck out of #2. Just as much because it's probably Bosa taken #1 than the haul they are going to get for #1.

A well-respected NFL individual in the know just gave me this Top 10 night-before best guess:

Quinnen Williams, AZ
Bosa, SF
Oliver NYJ
Kyler Murray, OAK
Devin White, TB
Haskins, NYG
Hockenson, JAX
Josh Allen, DET
Christian Wilkins, ATL
Devin Bush, DEN

See you in the mentions.

(Note: ATL picking at 9 means they traded with BUF)
