These guys are really dumb. They keep saying “Gase has won nothing” like it means anything. What has Maccagnan won? They all loved Maccagnan because he played grab ass with the media.

The critique that you can’t do the right thing today because you did the wrong thing yesterday is a serious logical flaw; Sunk cost fallacy 101.

The GM sucked. All the rumored critiques Gase made are correct.

Is it smart to have Gase as GM? No. But I’m assuming they will get someone in there that isn’t as bad as Maccagnan, almost impossible not to.

Nice to see Gase's pattern of alienating every good skill position player he's ever had continues unabated. Yeah, the Bell deal wasn't a good one, but leaking to the press that you didn't want the guy doesn't help. Gase is a weird case, he performed at a mediocre to bad level in Miami, but at the same time they had a lot of QB injury issues. However, the flip side is that he badly misused his skill position players, and alienated all of them to the extent they all wanted out. He seems like he's terrible at running the lockerroom, and dealing with egos, which is a big part of being an NFL head coach. I expect he fails miserably and is gone in 3 years.

The Jesters haven’t been that bad since Parcells was here. When they had the good offensive line they played solid football. Parcells, Herm, and Rex won some playoff games.

They have been a disaster since Mid Rex.

I thought Mangini was good; not great but good. He got a lot of good players on the team. Rex’s success can be chalked up to using Mangini’s guys and being a players coach after a dictator.

Please please please let this happen
Now if we can just get Kobe to be the next GM of the Heat, we’ll have a full set of hatable Boston/New England sports antagonists running mediocre Miami teams.

As pointed out, I can’t read.

How does Manning running the Jets fit into this?

In choosing a new GM, the jets will ask a NFL sideline reporter to assist them in their quest

Regardless of who is right and wrong in this particular instance, one can't sustain success with the level of churn the Jets have had at GM/HC.
You’re not unsuccessful because you churn; you churn because you’re unsuccessful. It’s not like being patient with subpar coaching and front-office talent is a winning strategy, and I’m at a loss to think of anyone this century whom I felt the Jets gave up on too soon.

I’m in the minority that thinks Gase did nothing wrong here. There was a power struggle in the organization, and Gase won — sure, he won ugly, but that’s how these things usually go. And I think threatening to lay the blame squarely on Le’veon Bell if this year’s team disappoints isn’t the worst way to motivate a me-first player like Bell.

This is not an either-or. You churn because you are unsuccessful, and churn almost always involved jettisoning useful pieces. I don't have strong opinions one way or the other about whether some of the HC / GM hires should have had a longer leash. But when I see five (or whatever) administrations in a row fail, I tend to think the issue is ownership.

Oh yeah, no disagreement there, particularly with regard to the Jets. But ownership’s failure has been repeatedly hiring the wrong people to run the team; cutting bait relatively quickly when they realized their mistakes is one of the few things they’ve done right. Some owners are too slow to do that; Shad Khan (Jaguars) and Mike Brown (Bengals) are two current examples that spring to mind.

Woody Johnson is a walking and breathing argument for the need for a stiff inheritance tax in this country. He'd fuck up a twenty-five-cent lemonade stand.

In a limited defense of Woody, he is currently the Ambassador to England and ceded operational control to his brother Christopher
So not only did he run the Jets into the ground, but he caused Brexit and cost Teresa May her job too boot? He's on brand everywhere.

I think Mangini was given too short a leash, and could easily have grown into a respectably successful coach. He went 10-6, 4-12, 9-7, all in a tough division. The first two years he had exactly one pro bowl season (out of Justin Miller, a corner back / KR - he also drafted Revis in 2007), the latter year he had Brett Favre starting 16 games. Could he have done what Rex did the following two seasons? Maybe. Someone with a better tactical sense could compare 2008 to 2009 and see how well he was putting his players in a position to do their best work. But I certainly didn't see anything in that 2008 season that suggested that he shouldn't have had the opportunity to give it a try.

Also, I bet he wouldn't have drafted Mark Sanchez, much less gotten a Mark Sanchez tattoo. So there's that.

Remarkably, the Jets have less GMs and HCs than the Bills or Phins since the BB era started

This isn’t quite accurate. Scott Pioli was de facto GM (VP of Player Personnel) in New England Until 2009.

Mangini should have not been fired. 8-3 when Favre was healthy. Wins over 10-0 Tenn(iirc), Bradyless pats in ot(Pats were still good) and the AZ squad that went to the SB.

Shockingly, that article sucks.

"Owner explores other options at coach and GM...but doesnt tell the current coach or GM he may fire them!!!"

Oooohhh...the treachery.

Manish sucks. Tries so hard to make stories out of nothing burgers, Jets fans always bite.

"Good for them"
Why good for them? It's okay to steal because he had two girlfriends?

probably because she was unaware that was a euphemism for "probably hookers", and assumed they were justifiably taking what they were owed when he broke their hearts by breaking up with them.

I'm still not fully on-board with her ethics here even in the most charitable of interpretations, but I assume she missed the innuendo by a mile, and that was a big part of the humor.

Joe Douglas is a really good hire. I have been doing a lot of research on front offices for ITP, and I was stunned at how much turnover there was in the Philly front office. There are not a lot of Reid holdovers. Douglas had to build that scouting team from the ground up.

That's huge to me. I think one of the problems teams run into is that they hire great evaluators who aren't necessarily great managers. The GM has a lot of of managerial responsibilities. Douglas is a great evaluator who has also proven himself to be a great manager. He'll have stuff he needs to learn - Roseman is one of the best cap guys in the business, so Douglas has likely barely done anything there - but he would have been on my short list for sure.

Douglas cut his teeth under Ozzie Newsome and Phil Savage in BAL, so he's, what, the 8th Belichick GM in the league? BB, Douglas and DeCosta (both indirect), Dimitroff, Licht, Quinn, Robinson - seven, I guess. You could make arguments for John Lynch and Mike Mayock (played for BB) and Dave Caldwell (indirect). Not bad.

I'd been reading that the negotiations had fallen apart over less than a million. Guess Houston firing their GM lit a fire under their asses to get the deal done.
