Agreed. I don't want to speak for anyone else , but expecting to get around in <4.5 hour on a weekend at a pubic course in MA is crazytalk. 8 minute tee-times generally mean backups galore, especially when you have people trying to reach par 5s in 2 after they hit their drives 190.

I signed up for the International's July Club Member experience. Dipping my toe in the water. I also have an opportunity to join Worcester or Sterling as well. Anyone play all 3 and can give me the pros and cons?

As you know, and as should be obvious, the US is a giant country so there's no answer to your question. In New England, a 5.5 hour round was good. In Colorado that would lead to strongly worded letters. In non tourney play outside of densely populated areas a public round should take no more than 4.5 hours. A good round walking should be under 4 (weekday, not busy, etc.). 10 PM rounds take significantly longer.
Of course - I'm just curious what other people's experiences currently are.

Meanwhile, I had an incredibly frustrating round at North Berwick today in the qualifier for the Esmond Trophy matchplay tournament. After double-bogeying the 3rd hole, I then made six pars and a birdie over the next seven holes - playing better and better as the round went one - to be only +1 through 10 and in great shape. The problem was that the weather was getting biblical, with thunder rumbling in the distance and truly ominous clouds making things really dark; at one point around 4:30 in the afternoon, it was darker than it was at 10:30 p.m. last night at Dunbar. And after I hit what I thought was a good drive at the par-5 11th, we got hit by a very sharp, heavy shower for a few minutes - and when we started again, the lightning was getting closer, I was getting a little bit scared, and my game kinda fell apart. I yanked my second at the 11th into heavy rough and lost the ball, en route to another double. On the 13th tee, the heavy rains returned - five minutes later, there were puddles all over the fairways, and I again badly pulled a drive into tall grass and lost another ball. In four holes I went from +1 to +7, and in the end I did well to finish with an eight-over 79. The worst part is that only a few of us at the tail end of the field got hit by the rain - it was lovely for most of the day, but I was in the penultimate group, and we definitely had the worst of the conditions. So I really don't know if I've done well enough to get through to the matchplay; I think I probably have, but it's touch and go. (I'll find out tomorrow.)

[EDIT: I was right - I qualified, but only just. One shot worse and I would have failed to get in, because the first tiebreak is better back score on the back nine, and I was 37 out and 42 back. So I play in the last match off on Monday evening, at 6:07 p.m.]

That group will be playing from the back tee too because anything short of that bruises their ego.

Agree on round time in MA. Public courses are almost always slow and worse on weekends. Private you can do quite a bit better, and might be able to fly at non-peak times.

My club usually will be 4-4:30 per round, but we caught behind the wrong flight during a tournament recently and it was over 5 hours.

Conversely, my 14 year and I played a public course this afternoon (4 pm tee time) - Lyman Orchard Jones course in Middlefield CT, and finished in under 4 hours, and that’s with a single playing though twice. Course was empty - maybe due to threat of bad weather. Turned out no rain, and there was an outdoor wedding with a great band you could hear throughout the back nine. A Lovely evening.

I hope you don’t have to DQ yourself for signing an incorrect scorecard. ;)

By the way, you’re a hack. Even I managed to make a 4 on #3 at North Berwick. (Don’t worry about my 8 on #11, which was one of two snowmen I made that day.)

8 minute tee times suck. 10 minutes are fine if you’re private and have people that know the course. 12 are the best otherwise. I worked at a course in HS/college with 8 and it led to 5+ hour rounds on weekends, especially around holidays and a bunch of 40+ year old men yelling at a 20 year old who has incompetent 70 year old rangers.

Side note, I can’t wait to retire and become a ranger with my free time.

Funnily enough, my partner and I had both signed my card when my partner realized he had subtracted 5 (my handicap) from 79 (my score) and gotten 72. That wouldn't have DQed me, though, because you're allowed to add up your numbers incorrectly as long as the numbers themselves are correct.

Incidentally, my balls rolled into several divots yesterday - which didn't help my mood - but I did have one huge slice of luck at the 16th: I decided to try and carry the burn with my tee shot, but although I mishit it pretty badly, I pulled it just perfectly enough that it trickled onto and across the stone bridge on the left, and I was able to make par from there.

I'm now 0-2 in singles matchplay this year, having been bounced out of the Esmond Trophy at North Berwick in the first round yesterday evening. For seven holes I had absolutely no golf swing, and my putting stroke was equally shocking (I left a four-footer short which I needed to hole for a half!). At that point I was four down...then I made a small adjustment on the 8th which almost completely fixed my swing, but my 8-handicap opponent - who was playing well anyway - proceeded to reach the green in two at the par-5 8th and the par-5 9th, the former being into a stiff breeze. (I hit a decent drive and a good 3 wood and was 90 yards short of the green at the 8th.) I hit the ball well from that point on, but my putting stroke remained a shambles, and I lost 5&4. Didn't even get to play the Redan hole.

By the way, I'm fully aware that these round recaps are terribly self-indulgent - and I would probably stop writing them at this point, but I'll continue if only out of hope that the next time one of you is coming to Scotland, you'll remember that there's a guy who will happily host you for a game. (Two happy SoSH customers at Dunbar so far!)

I, for one, like reading the recaps. I wish the US golf culture was as focused on competitive play as the Scottish so mostly it just makes me jealous that you have both affordable private golf as well as competitions available at basically all times.

Edit: Oh, and I just found out that I may need to go to London for work. If that's the case, expect another SoSH visitor.

After 37 years of playing golf, I had my first hole in one yesterday

And because I was playing solo, I had no one to attest or high five.

But it was still fucking awesome

That's awesome! Enjoy it. It's such a freak thing. I've got one and it was a lot of years ago. I've played a lot of rounds of golf at a reasonably high level and never had another. What's the story? Where? How?

In
Bolton. I was playing like crap. Parred the first 5 holes and then the wheels had come off. Ended up ending the front 9 with triple
Bogey and three doubles in a row. I was already 4 over in the back. Home was playing about 150 or so
Downhill

Grabbed my 8iron and put a reasonable good swing on it. Ball
Landed middle and just trickled right in the hole. I couldn’t tell initially if it was in or just outside the cup.

Great feeling to see it in the hole.

Hey @FL4WL3SS , you did Keto right? Or am I thinking of someone else? Anyway for those who have done it, what do you do for snacks on the golf course?
Yeah that was me, I'm pretty experienced/knowledgeable with it.

It's difficult to get right and people confuse low carb with keto. Unless you're pissing on sticks, it'll be hard to tell if you're actually doing keto.

Having said that, snacks are really hard. Too much protein can kick you out of ketosis, nuts can have a lot of carbs (cashews especially). A lot if "keto" friendly snacks out there have way more carbs than you should be eating. You'll want to look at things like parmesan crisps, bone broth, avacado, nuts in moderation, olives in moderation, cauliflower, homemade fat bombs.

Realistically, you should just eat a meal before you go. If you're doing the keto diet correctly, hunger can be held off and you'll feel satiated while you play.

Expect some energy and strength loss, at least initially, however.

Walnuts, pecans, jerky, chomps sticks, epic bars. The thing about keto or other insulin sensitive diets is that you shouldn't really be getting hungry. I've had walnuts in my bag for so long they're probably years gone bad. If you don't mind looking insane you can but individual baggies of cocnut out at TJs

Dude! Congrats. I've vowed to myself I'm going to ace one of the par 3s on the Oaks this year, and I've come REAL close on 13 already.

PM me - I'm a member at the International and have put in probably 25-30 rounds there this year already. We have a group of about 10 of us there, if you ever want to play, let me know. I've had a blast being a member there.

edit: my brother has played Worcester CC many times too so he could fill you in on that one.

Played this morning at 6:30am to beat the heat. On 15 tee we see the starter waiting for us by our carts. We walk up and say how you doing?

“Hey fellas I know it’s hot but just so you know you’re two holes behind the group in front of you”

Me “umm okay? You know we didn’t tee off til 6:50 right? Because of a back up?”

Him “I’m well aware of that. You have 2 holes ahead of you”

Me “okay. What time is it?”

He checks his watch and tells me it’s 9:45

Me “so you do realize we’re going to play 18 holes as a foursome in 3 hours and 45 minutes right?”

Him “yeah I realize that. I’m just telling you that you have two holes open”

Whatever dude.

Was the group behind bumping into you? I think courses generally need to do a better job of addressing slow play but just because the group ahead is flying doesn't necessarily mean you need to catch up or let groups through. Also, by the time you hit the 15th hole it's kind of not worth it.

Nope. In fact the group behind us was 2 holes behind.
Brutal. I had the same thing happen to my group recently. There was probably a hole open ahead of us and one open behind us. The Ranger hounded us incessantly. At one point he was driving his cart next to my friends cart and watching every shot. We were on pace for about 4 hours as a foursome. No idea why he was picking on us. The pro handed us buy one get ones when we walked off 18 and said, “apologies from our staff.” We never complained. But someone obviously did.

Is this at your club or a public course?

Best part about #clublife is a lack of rangers. It’s freeing.

We once had a ranger force us to go take a drop at the 150 mark because we went inside to get beers at the turn when the cart hadn't shown up for the front 9. Group in front of us was waiting on 10 tee. Group behind us had just tees off on the par 5 ninth. It was such bullshit. Of course, the cart girl turns up on that hole and sees we're all pissed and asks about it. Turns out her parents run the place and she was pissed. Comped us beers and a round of golf for the experience. I've never seen that before or since in a lot of years of golf.

Last weekend (not the 100+ heat index one, the one before that) I played probably the 9 of my life at Highfields. It was a 40, which isn't my best relative to par. But I blew 2 tee shots OB (3 and 9) so that number could have been much better., especially taking out the inexcusable 3 putt. And that was with missing ever single fairway. Mostly left...
Par (pull left), Par (par 3, hit to 15 feet), Double (tee shot OB right), Bogey (tee shot in left rough, 3 putt), Par (5 iron to 20 feet), Par (miss L, approach short right, almost jarred a flop), Birdie (90 yards in from left rough), Par (pull didn't pull, SW in and two putt), Double (tee shot OB Right)

The back 9 I started to to tire some, but found a go-to tee shot.. For 15 years or so, I have been a right->left player (hence my misses right... I try to go down the right side and have the ball come back middle/middle-left). On 12, I started to hit a cut (because it fit the shape of the hole) , and felt so confident on the tee. So on 12 & 13 I hit cuts off the tee, found middle of the fairway. 14 I played straight up and hit a snapper. 15/16 I hit the cut to the middle of the fairway. 17 was a par 3 (a bad 3 putt), and 18 my cut didn't cut, but it ended up being an easy par on a par 5 (Driver/8i/Wedge/2putts )

I played a par 3 course with a buddy last night. We ended playing til it was dark so tee'd off at 6:30 pm, played 14 par 3's, each time playing 2 or 3 balls each. Can't beat it for $13.

Also I tried the Srixon Z-Star ball. I liked it a lot.

Yessir.
And I did not break any tee boxes. In a fun twist,on the JulE6 tee box, my brother got harassed by a ranger. "We don't sell those beers here, you must have brought them on the course yourself" OggBro:" I got them at the snackbar/turn, I am sure you can use your walkie-talkie to confirm that they do have these beers there... "

I've mostly played Srixon for a few years now...it may be trite, but I think they have a crisp, bright look that is appealing to me when standing over the ball (whereas I think Titleists look kind of dull).

Srixon is incredibly well regarded. Bridgestone too. Titleist, at least IMO, is overrated but certainly just as good. They market a lot and can be found everywhere. At this point any of the major OEM urethane covered balls are excellent.

I’m a Chrome Soft guy myself. Yellow soccer ball ftw.

My brother plays Bridgestone and absolutely loves them. I've never done well with them.

I alternate between Titleist and Vices depending on my mood. I love the Vice balls, especially for the price (1/2 the cost) but they do scuff really easily. I've also played a few rounds with the TaylorMade TP5 (including my personal best round) and liked those a lot as well.

At this point they're all good, as was mentioned. It's mostly personal preference.

I, again, want to remind everyone that if you have a Burlington, Ross, Marshal’s, or TJ Max near you that you should never be paying full price for golf shirts. If you like Nike or Oakley shirts Burlington has them for between $19-$25 a piece.

Most are last year’s designs but if you don’t care about that (I don’t) then you can find some great deals. My local Burlington just had a lot come in, so they had a bunch on the clearance rack. I bought a few XL Nike shirts for $15 each.

I had my first competitive outing of note for a while this evening in the second round of the Titleist Matchplay tournament (first round report was here), playing against a 7 handicapper who was getting three shots off of me. I didn't start well at all, missing a few short putts early on and falling 2 down after five, but then I parred the next nine holes and won eight of them, including six in a row from the 6th to the 11th, and won 5&4. My opponent did make things a bit easy for me; in fairness, a few of my pars easily could have been birdies, but when you have two putts to win a hole from 10 or 12 feet, you'd have to be either pretty stupid or score-obsessed not to focus entirely on speed and lag your first putt. I can't remember winning six straight holes in a match before. (I do very clearly remember defeating one of my college teammates in an 18-hole intra-squad match at Brookline 9&8, so I must have won a lot of holes in a row that day, but that was as much down to my teammate having a shocker as me being brilliant; today was more of an even mix in that regard.)

Today was my first competitive round using my new putting stroke. If you've played with me at any point over the last 10-15 years, you've probably seen me in a horrible crouch with an unreasonably wide stance reminiscent of Michelle Wie's recent putting form (although I got there way before Wie did). That stroke has worked well at times, but not so well that I want to keep looking and feeling so stupidly awkward like that, so the other night I put in some time on the practice putting green using an upright stance and a cross-handed grip, on the basis that many people seem to think that if you were starting from scratch as a putter it makes more sense to learn cross-handed technique. It generally seems to be working OK so far - not perfectly or entirely consistently, just OK - but I'm definitely less self-conscious using it, and it's probably better for my back over the long haul anyway.

Nordstrom Rack has nice stuff but still expensive. They get a lot of Travis Mathew hats and shorts. A few shirts, but they're still in the $40 range.

Played streamsong this weekend. Good course but I'll say I wasn't blown away by it. Worth a trip though. Great facility, three courses, hour outside Tampa

Pricey yes. Was good. It's interesting it ranks so high. For a hanse course I think Boston golf plays better personally

I usually hate shopping in store but it seems like there's some good variance in the way golf shirts fit. I almost bought some RLX shirts til I read they run big, and passed on a good sale at Bonobos too cuz it was final sale. I have a Stitch polo I can't return, didnt want to do that again.

As much as I like golf IDK that I'd want to be so in the middle of nowhere to do it

TJMaxx and Marshall’s are also great places to find running/workout gear. At least shirts, shorts, socks. They tend to clear stuff out dirt cheap compared to full retail. You just need to drop in someone regularly since stock is hit or miss.
