Welp. Got a rude awakening for the "Boogeymen". Uncharacteristic mistakes also contribute to doing the Patriots in. Let's count the ways:
  • Lost too many gaps and assignments in the first quarter, putting NE in a 17-point deficit
  • Edelman's fumble was a killer, just when the Ravens D was getting tired and the offense was moving consistently
  • Ill-timed penalties including the frustrating encroachment that turned a FG into a TD
  • Against a weak pass-rushing team, the OL way leaky until the Ravens DL tired out
Rogers and Brady can both share a slice of the humble pie. Into the bye week with plenty of positives but a number of significant concerns.

Not fair to put it all on Edelman, but that fumble was catastrophic. Ravens D was gassed and Brady was moving the ball with ease

1.) Edelman
2.) Newhouse
3.) All the pantywaists in the game thread. Calling the game “over” in the first quarter was appalling enough, incessant whining about Collinsworth (one of the better announcers) sucked too...but when members called for late hits and injuries to Lamar Jackson, guilty only of being crazy talented, I though I’d stumbled into ChiefsPlanet. Be better.

Thought the offense found as good of a rhythm as they’ve had all season but the fumble killed it.

Sanu looks like a great pickup. Fits the O very well.

Weird shit always happens against Baltimore.

Edelman’s fumble was bad, but it was back to a 4 point game in two minutes. Allowing two 9 minute TD drives on the road in the second half? That was the game. Defense stunk.

Major oof on this Collinsworth take. His fastball could now be categorized as Wakefield on a 3-0 count.

Defense. It was a game even after the Edelman fumble and the D could not step up. That’s the game.
Edelman fumble TD was awful but not decisive.

Totally agree that the defense was the biggest factor. The long TD drives by Baltimore in the second half were killers. No offense is compensating for that because (a) you’re already behind and (b) they had the ball forever.

In a city with too many hand guns, wasn't it inevitable a pistol would do them in?

They couldn't stop it.

So maybe the coaching gets some blame for this one.

Stats are pretty crazy. New England cut it to 4 with 23 minutes left. Baltimore possessed the ball for more than 17 of the next 19 minutes.

Defensive game plan. We looked completely unprepared in the first quarter. 4th Q it looked like they just ran out of gas. O was inconsistent, but D got whipped.

And Collinsworth was terrible, I can't believe anyone would defend him.

Defense and Newhouse. Newhouse is catastrophic bad at LT, please stay healthy Wynn, when you return.
It amazes me that the Patriots continue to trot Newhouse out there. I would have went with Dan Skipper over him in a heart beat. Mute now since he's on Texan

I don't love Collinsworth, but otherwise this is spot on. The game thread was embarrassing from the minute we got behind. Some posters have zero fortitude and it's pathetic.

Edelman's fumble was a killer. Rush defense was poor all night when it was pretty well known Baltimore would be trying to ram it down our throats.

Gonna be a fun two weeks for everyone at Gillette.

Yup. Defense had a chance to make it a close game and failed at basically every opportunity in the 2nd half. Really disappointed in their effort. Can’t expect those crazy single digit games every week but they got flat out smoked for most of the night. Just completely non competitive.

Moot.

Mute is for Collinsworth.

This game was virtually all on the defense (also the Edelman fumble). The offense was destroying Baltimore for most of the game and they couldn't get their hands on the ball down the stretch.

Not a goat but I think the non challenge on the pick play that let Baltimore covert ended up big. I can only assume the coaches in the booth told him it wouldnt work and, at the time, I’m sure Bill didn’t want to waste a time out in what he thought was gonna be a close game.
But, looking back, that could have been a huge swing

It was a pretty clear and conclusive pick. I think it would have been called on review.

I have difficulty blaming someone for a fumble unless they're prone. If you handle the ball enough times, it's going to happen. Period.

With that said, I understand that this thread is about assessing what actually happened, on the field *today* so in that sense, yeah, it was a killer.

Who knows what would’ve happened, and I don’t think the play clock on TV is official, but that non delay of game call annoys me.

Still, Ravens had the ball for another 3 hours and went another 10,000 yards regardless, but still...

Edelman up to 63 catches. 10 tonight. Almost always in traffic. Many wearing a rib protecting jacket. He takes more hits than anyone on the team. Three lost fumbles in his career. It was shit timing, but it sucks the rest of the team didn’t pick him up.

Edelman gets the GOAT. That fumble swung everything. They were shutting down the Ravens hard after the first quarter, the stadium was quiet, and talking to friends that are Ravens fans they were nervous.

There have been many, many clear and conclusive OPI/DPI plays that haven't been reversed, especially in the last few weeks.
I would have been very surprised if a challenge on that was reversed not because it wasn't a penalty but just the way coaches challenges on PI are being treated this season. Almost like it is an affront to officials if you dare challenge a PI call. The only good thing to come from that rule change is that booth challenges actually seem to be officiated reasonably.

On the bright side, our new kicker looked good and their jackass of a kicker missed a PAT, funny how the replacement ref bozos called almost the exact same kick good a few years ago on a game winning FG.

On offense, 4th and goal from about the one, I'd have gone for it there, unless they have no confidence in their line to make a yard.

If that is the case, that's not good.

let the trollin' begin

@BenVolin: Sunday night’s game proved that the first eight games were really just a mirage for the #Patriots, on both sides of the ball. The offense is better than they had shown, and the defense isn’t as dominant as we had thought.

Kyle Van Noy getting faked by a juke going the wrong direction is brutally bad. I think he forgot where he and Lamar were on the field at the time. Cause Lamar got him to bite on a fake towards Lamar's own endzone.

Who cares if a player wants to make a move towards their own endzone and away from a touchdown.

One positive is that this veteran D will learn a lot from this game when/if they meet again. There were more than a few jokes about how BB didn't want to leave anything on film (ridiculous) but the experience of facing this "one-of-a-kind" offense may prove to be quite valuable come playoffs.

It's gotta be Edelman. His fumble completely and utterly changed the game. It was a backbreaker.

Tough to stick it to one guy for one play, but it was colossal.

Linebackers, red zone, and coaching. Need to give Newhouse help with TE as he has shown for weeks he can’t hold up. Their most effective red zone offense is White with the surprise runs...that’s not good.
