I am pretty much resigned to the fact that McD, Brady, and the bunch will not be able to figure it out at least until the playoff starts (and even that's wishful thinking).

Where was Harry? What happened to Sanu? With Edelman double/triple-teamed, it was pretty much down to Myers and White for Brady.

The late TD doesn't really change the equation for me. Chiefs up next.

Sanu stinks and they're relying on guys like Dorsett and Myers to be more than they are really capable of being. Same issue the team has had any time in the last 5-6 years when Gronk was hurt where they have no one that can beat man coverage.

That Sanu trade is looking real bad right now. Should have just went bigger and brought in an actual WR.

Sanu now has 122 yards over 4 games. He's Chad Johnson circa 2011.

2nd edit: Sanu and Gordon combined: 10 games, 409 yards. Gross.

LOL at the stats:

29 to 16 1st down > Pats
448 yards to 276 yards > Pats

Sure seemed like it was the other way around.

No separation from the WR. Not sure if they can't make the plays physically or what, but Brady had time and can still make the throws...

The amount of falling into the ground off balance throws was quite high tonight. Even when there wasn’t a ton of pressure.

I know Colingsworth kept saying this, but they really refused so show some wide angle replays, other than the ones showing Edelman getting doubled. It feels like it’s 50/50 covered versus Brady just having zero faith in anyone other than #28 or #11.

How about one jump ball for Harry?

The Pats gave up a 2nd rounder for Sanu. How much bigger could they have gone?

they just either executed horribly on 3rd/4th downs, or got buttfucked in the case of KVN's hold on a 3rd down. in retrospect, Brady throwing it away too early on 3rd & Goal on the opening drive just set the whole [bad] tone for the game.

defense gave up their long TD drive and were pretty good after that. one short field TD that Brady/Harry caused, one actual other TD drive, one KVN-hold assisted TD.

Yeah, it seems like Brady definitely forced some throws into coverage and is not at all on the same page with Meyers. I'm sure they both share some responsibility there.

TB12 was definitely on the goat list along with most of the rest of the offense.
Also, the pass defense for giving up three pass TDs tonight. Very uncharacteristic.

Feels like between the Brady's accuracy and decision making, Josh's play calling, the offensive line issues, drops, and untimely penalties that this team can never get in a rhythm. Personally I feel like McDaniels needs to do better. The book is out on how to stop this offense: double Jules, pay close attention to James White, if Sony is in there's a 65% chance it's a run, make the other cast of characters beat you. McDaniels needs to adjust. The offense feels stale and predictable.

I'd also like to see Rex B ride the pine. He's pretty much a stiff at this point in time. I'll be shocked if he's even in the NFL next year. Let's take a look at Damien Harris. In his one brief outing he actually looked good.

Sanu got hurt in his second game returning a punt and then missed his third. His drop was bad tonight, but this take is scorching hot.

I had issues with a 2nd round pick for a 700/800 yard receiver at the time. Trading a 2nd for peak output Sanu is still pretty blah. Maybe literally no one else besides he and Sanders were available, but I'd have rather they just traded a 1st for an actual player than a 2nd for a guy that averages 30 yards a game.

This is the 4th game he's played.

2 for 23 against Cle
10 for 81 against Baltimore
2 for 4 against Philly (and before the 'he was hurt stuff -- he was garbage that game before being hurt)
3 for 14 today.

He's been bad. He's not getting open, he's dropping the ball when he does get open, and he's not getting yards even when he catches it. 17 catches for 122 catches in 4 games. Even with an injury, that's a bad stat line over three games. That's just an okay stat line over 2.

not saying the D was great by any stretch butttttttt

One pass TD was a glorified option that the Texan (Hopkins?) pitched forward to Watson.

One was the egregious kvn non call.

Not a goat, but I still find it hard to believe that White was brought down on his mid-game big gainer by a DB grabbing one of his wrists. Potential TD there.

Secondary got beat a bit too often.

Losing faith OL will gel this season. Cannot sustain another injury.

But the holding wasn’t called. And the pass defense still allowed a long completion on 3rd and 10.

deep inside Guido territory
Brady
All WRs not named Edelman
Cannon
LBs in coverage
Belichick/McD-Wtf was the first 2 pt play? Why not more urgency down 19?

They need to figure this offense out or they are 1 and done in the playoffs.

They did show a couple. Small sample size, but in those instances I said "Oh, he really didn't have anyone open".

The only guy who was regularly open was Lacosse and Lacosse obviously isn't even worth covering.

agree the D were crappy.

All i meant was that a glorified run counted as a td pass and a blown called counted as a td pass. So while 4td passes were scored, 1 was barely a pass and another people will quible abt how much that ‘td pass’ counts.

One positive out of this debacle is that if these seeds hold there would be a decent possibility they wouldn’t have to beat both KC and Baltimore.
And KC absolutely could beat Baltimore in a shootout. And maybe - as crazy as this seemed before the season started - KC is a better matchup for NE than Baltimore is. Plus in that scenario, NE would get KC in Foxboro.

The two are 100% related.
I mean probably, but we can’t say for sure. Earlier in the game, Simon had Watson sacked and he escaped and what would be a scoring drive (I think).
KVN was held. Jones got beat in coverage (after making a great play on 2nd down).

Edit - I get it. The KVN hold was a bad missed call. All I am saying is that the pass defense didn’t play its best tonight.

The Eagles-Pats SB is an example of what happens when no holding penalties are called. The Pats got the call in the Falcons SB as Long was dragged to the the ground by his neck, taking them out of FG range. Tonight Nav Noy was held in a similar fashion and no call and Watson was able to throw the long ball for the TD (which was juuuuuust beyond the reach of Jones).

“Letting the players play” has an impact on the game.

There was a hold on the Simon miss as well.. the linebacker following up was yanked back from behind.. otherwise Watson most likely doesn’t escape. You can see him look back at the ref in disbelief.

edit: and I get that calls are missed and that’s part of the game, but they had a huge impact on the game. Their long sustained drive was basically eight penalties on the pats more or less... stuff that was let go the other way. And it’s not ‘letting them play’ when one side is getting called for some pretty weak penalties.. and the other isn’t. I would have liked to have seen more wide shots of their secondary because it just looked like they had hands on receivers all day or on DBs as well. Would just have been good to see if the secondary play was similar on both sides.

Seeing stats now.. pats 8 penalties for 60 yards and Houston 8-79.. so who knows

I think it was Butler following up and you are probably right.
All my initial post meant was that bad calls or not, it was not the best night for the pass defense.
If Brady doesn’t get excused (and he shouldn’t) neither should the secondary. Perhaps the expectations are just too high as they had been playing otherworldly.

the 1 game he was actually a focal point of the offense he had a huge game, but yeah other than that he totally stinks

Whoever gave all the LBs and half the secondary the flu, definitely looked slow and not like themselves for a lot more of today than we're used to

They’ve been off for a few weeks. I don’t think Watson looked amazing.. they had one drive where the marched down field and another that was plays and penalties and then the long bomb on 3rd? Am I forgetting any others? For the most part fuller and Hopkins were kept in check.. and their running game was sort of non existent.

we’re probably holding them to too high a standard and I bet being sick didn’t help.

The last three drives by New England:

12 plays, 75 yards, TD, 5:30
13 plays, 75 yards, TD, 6:11
6 plays, 94 yards, TD, 1:46

That started in the third quarter so it wasn’t “garbage time”. Maybe Houston felt that last drive was but still. This is to me the silver lining. For the first time in WEEKS, I feel like the offense was clicking. Not that they’ll suddenly be a juggernaut offensively again, but I saw things there that give me hope moving forward. I bet the Pats did too.

I thought Jones had his worst game since he became a regular. Beat several times, notably on consecutive long passes for scores (one of which the receiver failed to secure well — Ibthought more the receiver’s fault than Jones’ ripping for the ball)

I doubt the Patriots feel like they've figured anything out offensively from that game. The Texans are a bottom of the league D against the pass, and the last three drives still were mostly just throwing to Edelman and White. Their best players made some plays late to make the game competitive, but we still see no real identity or answers elsewhere on the roster from them. I just don't think this team is equipped to throw the ball 50 times and be successful, outside of Edelman they don't really have anyone who is beating man coverage and making plays. Brady has been rightly criticized for being far below his usual standards this year, but he also doesn't have much in the way of skill players who make his job easier.

If they get it together, I just doubt it's going to be with Brady continuing to lead the league in pass attempts. Maybe it's with the running game, and playing off that. Michel was productive early, then had like 2 carries in the second half. The Patriots usually don't let the score dictate how they play, so not sure what was up with that.

All that said, we know this team is the smartest in the league, and there's always a chance of them figuring it out until they're eliminated.
