I don't understand how Bailey didn't recover the fumble. He had it with his knee / body down. How is that not possession?

edit: What entitles the Eagles to possession on that play?

I think the reffing was opportunistically awful yesterday. The PI call on the last drive was dreadful, and the lack of calls on roughing the passer --- I don't get it.

I'm, not sure there's any way that what he did was "have" that ball. His hands were both on it at the same time for a microsecond.

Eagles ball because they were the last team with possession of it. Ball spotted at spot of fumble because it was fumbled forward. (No more Holy Rollers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Roller_(American_football)

Sacks stop drives, but they also adversely affect field position. Given the punter (and Slater and Bethel), and given the D, punting is not a bad outcome in many instances. The further upfield they punt the better. This offense is built on consistently gaining yardage, not on chunk plays. Sacks / negative plays are pretty much the worst thing that can happen to this offense (outside of turning it over). If this team avoids turnovers and just lets the special teams and defense go to work, they can contend. If the offense improves, they are the favorite. Simple as that IMO.
The Bailey/Slater/Bethel holy trinity is really something. It seems like those two are down around the returner by the time the ball drops down from the heavens pretty much every time. I think if I were an opposing ST coach, I might try something new to block them. Maybe drop three guys back, one to return, and two to block Slater and Bethel when they inevitably beat the vise guys.

How's Bailey's arm? Cuz that return formation is begging to be faked upon

2 vise guys, 3 guys deep, 6 guys rushing. No different from when a team puts two vise guys on each gunner.
Someone like @IdiotKicker can speak to this better, but I think the idea of the vice is that it's much harder to block gunners once they get going and have a full head of steam. It's also a challenge to set up the right blocking angle in space like that, because the gunner can see both the blocker and the returner, but the blocker can only see the gunner and doesn't know if he's positioning himself between the returner and the gunner. Depending on how far back they are, they also might need to stay aware of where the ball is so they don't accidentally contact it and create a fumble. It's trickier than it sounds.

Was it San Francisco last week who lined their gunner up parallel to the punter so he could get even more unchecked speed going down the field? I think it was Goodwin, who was an Olympic runner.

That could be the countermove.

Can someone more knowledgeable than me explain what adjustment(s) the Patriots made after that first quarter? I don't recall Romo mentioning anything, other than on a few specific plays (i.e. dropping into cover-2 when Ertz was out). Was the improved defensive effort attributable to an adjustment, or was the Eagles losing Lane Johnson (and the increased ability to get pressure) more of a factor?

I don't think the noise was fake. I think it was just bad sound mixing as they tried to let Romo speak with less background noise between snaps.
Zolak mentioned this live on the radio when it happened while in the booth. Said it was very noticeable in the stadium. It wasn't the TV broadcast.

Nothing that I read about--they seemed to miss tackles in the early going and then the Eagles lost their best OL.

I would bet they were rocked back a bit by the 50 yard penalty on the first play as well.

Yeah, they were in control on D except for that one TD drive.
Pat's D shut the Eagles down on the first drive after that long PI. Forced a 3 and out the second drive. Gave up the long drive on 3rd series and then were in complete control until late drive when the D was playing safe.

Thanks DD and BJE. Yeah, I guess it’s too broad of a brush stroke to say that they struggled on D in the first quarter.

To contribute to the thread, I’d give my game ball to Bailey. It also seemed like Brooks was much more of a presence than in previous games, late penalty notwithstanding.
