Dolphins expected to announce Patriots DC Brian Flores as their head coach today.

Coming into the offseason, I wanted Miami to retain Gase, then I favored Kris Richard. Flores seemed like a relative unknown, a guy that didn’t seem like he was ready to be a head coach after one season of being New England’s DC.

Boy, did his stock explode during the playoffs. Have to wonder if all coaches weren’t allowed to be hired until after the Super Bowl, where Flores would rank.

It’s hard to isolate Flores from Belichick since we all know Belichick is very hands on with the game planning on defense, but ultimately Flores is the guy pulling the trigger on game day, and he painted a masterpiece against the NFL’s offensive golden boy on the biggest stage possible.

That was my “positive” in the SB game thread following the Pats win. That idea that Flores would be the hottest name out there if coaching searches began today...so it actually is exciting to feel like the Dolphins had some foresight for once.

I also feel much more optimistic about the impending hire than a month ago, even though my biggest takeaway from yesterday was that Jared Goff without Kupp, Gurley and McVay telling him what to do in his headset, is basically Ryan Tannehill.

But as much as Flores stock has risen, it’s not even the biggest coaching move the team has made...the real hire that is going to finally change the course of this Franchise is Offensive Line Coach - Pat Flaherty
No biases at all with that move lol

Has anyone read/heard any more detail about their Tanny plan? Cutting and moving on? Drafting a guy who sits while Tanny plays one more year?

It sounds like they are going to look to trade him, and if that fails, they’ll cut him.

I’ve heard nothing that suggests that he’ll be the QB in 2019.

It seems that they’re eying 2020 for a QB, which IMO, is the correct move. Give Flores a year to establish himself without the pressure that a young QB comes with. There are basically zero expectations for Miami in 2019, especially without a QB. The 2019 QB class is asscheeks, aside from maybe Kyler Murray. 2020 and 2021 are far better classes. Use this year to rebuild the defensive line and probably the offensive line.

Agree that it seems to bode well for Grier and Ross that they seemed to lock on to Flores before he was a popular pick.

I hope he doesn't throw a boatload of cash at Flowers as his first move. Double-in-Division whammy.
IMO, Miami is in full on burn-it-down rebuild mode. Flowers is young enough where he could still be good by the time Miami is decent, but I can’t see them splashing cash in free agents for at least a few years.

Save those dollars for when they have a QB on their rookie deal.

I was not particularly pissed to lose Patricia last year. I am very pissed to lose Flores. The chatter about the defense this year made it clear that the cognoscenti here felt like we were absolutely maximizing our talent on that side of the ball - and while not having the depth of understanding of some others here, it definitely looked the same to my eyes.

Congrats on what may turn out to be a good coaching hire. I'll be rooting for Flores as long as he's not a threat to beat us or take the division. If you want to get pumped, read this profile on him from 2 years ago:

For the Patriots' next coaching star, the odds were incredibly long

As a NYC resident I've coordinated some sports clinics in Brownsville I've seen firsthand that the kids there have almost no structure or support, by comparison to just about anywhere else I've seen or lived. Going to Poly Prep was already a 99th-percentile life outcome for him, to say nothing of Boston College, the NFL, and the incredible career he has carved for himself now.

I like that they’ve brought in three former Offensive Coordinators, and none of them is the actual OC.
Assuming they all work well together, it seems like a smart move by Flores to make sure there is a lot of experience on that side of the ball, and it speaks well of him that he was able to assemble a staff like that and get guys to buy in to jobs they may be overqualified for.

It’s still the Dolphins so it’s hard to muster anything beyond cautious optimism, but going off what’s happened and what’s been said this past month, I’m considering it a win that this at least warrants that and it’s not a train-wreck out of the gate.

I like that Flores has essentially hired true offensive and defensive coordinators to run both sides of the ball. I’m sure he’ll be involved with the defensive side of things, but it won’t be like Gase, who was the offensive coordinator and so engrossed in game planning and play calling on game day that other things would slip through the cracks.

Gase essentially said he was hands off on defense and let Burke run things, which was clearly a mistake. That arrangement might work better for him in NY with Greg Williams, but it was a failure in Miami.

Where does everyone stand with Murray?
Tough to know where his stock will wind up, but I know at least a few early mocks have him in Miami, which seems to have captured the imagination of Fins fans on other corners of the internet.

I’ve always argued that it was folly to maintain ridged requirements when it comes to size and other measurables, so apparently I’ve found my line with Murray, because he’s a guy that I’d be fine passing on. Even if he winds up an All-Pro, I wouldn’t lose sleep over the decision.
That isn’t to say that I don’t think he can be a good QB. But I do think for him to reach that point an organization will have to make accommodations across the board (more so than a typical QB), which at least to me, kind of defeats the purpose of drafting the first round “franchise” QB.
Then when you add other factors like experience, baseball still being a potential option, etc. it leads me back to the wait until next year plan. Although I will admit he does warrant consideration if he’s sitting there at #13. No way in hell I consider giving up assets to move up for him, or any QB this year.

IMO, both Tua and Fromm are better prospects than Murray.

I personally think that Murray goes before Miami picks. Some team will fall in love with him, and it might be a coin flip between he and Haskins for QB1.

I’m not afraid of his height so much as his build. Russell Wilson has outlasted RGIII in part because he was built far better to withstand an NFL beating every year. Murray isn’t quite as slight as a Lamar Jackson or RGIII, but that’s probably my top concern with him.

Miami hired Reggie McKenzie as a senior personnel executive.

https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/armando-salguero/article226425485.html

McKenzie is widely regarded as one of the better talent evaluators in the league. He won executive of the year in 2016. My guess is that with Grier taking on a more full-time GM role, he’s going to be less involved in the scouting as he’s been in the past and will be using McKenzie to essentially fill the role that Grier was previously in under Tannenbaum.

I think it’s another strong hire of a guy that has been around for a long time and is very well regarded.

Quick recap:

Miami loses James to Denver and Cameron Wake to Tennessee.

Miami signs Eric Rowe to a one year deal and extend Devante Parker with a two year deal, which is essentially a one year deal because there are 0 guaranteed dollars in year 2.

While it’s painful, especially losing a Dolphins’ legend like Cam Wake, this is the medicine Miami has to take. Purge the roster. Sign cheap veterans or underachievers, reset the salary cap, stockpile draft capital and right the ship so that they can have a sustainable plan moving forward.

Miami not going out and signing the biggest, shiniest toy on the market is a welcome change.

Everything points to him getting cut. I think he’s actually “too good” for what Miami is trying to accomplish this year, which is sucking and getting a high draft pick for a QB in 2020.

Tannehill probably wins 6-8 games with Miami, just good enough to screw them.

They’ll be eating his guaranteed money that they restructured, but I can’t see him playing in Miami in 2019.

Teddy Bridgewater visiting Miami today. Bridgewater is a South Florida native and was teammates with Devante Parker.

I’m ok with rolling the dice on Teddy Bridgewater on a 2 year deal. If he plays lights out, you’ve found a QB. If he falls on his face, you draft a QB in 2020 and move on from Bridgewater.

Feels like a gamble Miami should be taking, assuming the dollars are not crazy. Bridgewater was an ascending talent before his knee blew out, and now he’s a huge unknown.

The Dolphins were my first love as a sports fan, and while I continue to be deeply invested in the success of the Sox and my college allegiances (K-State & Providence), NFL losses stopped stinging about 5 years ago. We simply haven’t had a team in recent memory that felt like it was poised for sustained success. Nor did my opinion of Tannehill ever exceed a 6/10 in his entire tenure — too many deficiencies.

But today I’m feeling something about the team: relief. No more wish-casting on a flawed 30yo QB’s ceiling, no more patching the roster. Full and hopefully proper rebuild under way. I still have major reservations about Flores, but at least we’re going into a season clear-eyed for the first time in a long time.

With Tannehill, the question will always be what if? What if he didn’t play behind terrible offensive lines for the vast majority of his career? What if he didn’t get pummeled to the point of his body breaking down on him? What if he didn’t tear his ACL during the best stretch of his career as he was leading Miami to the playoffs? What if he had a coaching staff the believed in him like Gase did from the start of his career?

He was clearly a flawed QB, but he will always have my respect for playing tough, playing hurt, playing through pain, always giving the team his best, and always conducting himself as a pro on and off the field.

It’s truly the end of an era. Tannehill may not have been the answer to Marino, but he brought stability and production to a position that was in a constant state of flux for nearly a decade before him.

The rebuild is on. Grier is accumulating assets and purging cap, situating Miami to make a swift recovery if they can draft a QB in 2020. 2019 will be a tough year to stomach on the field, but the path has been laid to what should hopefully be greener pastures.

So the week of the draft is upon us.

Some names being frequently linked with Miami in round one are:

Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida
Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama
Christian Wilkins, DT, Clemson
Montez Sweat, Edge, Miss. State
Ed Oliver, DT, Houston
Drew Lock, QB, Missouri

It seems more likely that Oliver won’t make it to Miami. Lots of mocks have him getting selected by Buffalo at 9.

Taylor may not make it to Miami at 13 either, but Williams may. Sweat is another guy that may or may not be there, but I like his fit as an OLB/DE that is strong against the run and has sack production numbers that look pretty strong.

My ideal scenario is trading down. I’ve seen some mocks recently that have Houston trying to trade up with Miami to select an OT. If Miami can get an additional 2nd or a first rounder next year, I would be pretty happy.

Miami needs a lot of help along both the offensive and defensive lines. I would rather have the extra picks to help rebuild.

The other interesting possibility that remains is Josh Rosen. Peter King said in his article today that no team has done more work on Josh Rosen the last few weeks than Miami. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/04/22/nfl-mock-draft-fmia-peter-king/?cid=fmiatw

I would trade anything other than a first for Rosen. King speculates a third, but I have serious doubts that happens.

It’s a near no-lose situation. If Rosen sucks, you punted a second or third rounder on a potential franchise QB and you can still draft one in 2020. If it turns out that he’s actually pretty good, you may have just secured the bag for pennies of what Arizona paid just one year ago.

I would also say Rosen is probably QB2 in this draft class, maybe just behind Murray, but ahead of Haskins and Lock and Jones. You obviously lose a year of his cost controlled contract, but he would still be a first round selection in this year’s draft.

Edit: just watched a recent clip on YouTube and Todd McShay said that he would have Rosen as QB1 in this year’s draft class. Take that FWIW.

Miami selected Christian Wilkins, DT, Clemson at 13 overall.

This is probably the most Brian Flores pick they could have possibly made. Smart, versatile, tough player who is a 2 time captain and seen as the leader of the Clemson team. Miami will likely use him in the Trey Flowers role as a guy that can play both 4-3 DT and 3-4 DE. Miami’s D Line coach also happens to be Clemson’s former D Line coach Marion Hobby.

Still a surprising amount of talent on the board. Would love to see Miami take a tackle or guard/center in round 2. Jawaan Taylor, Eric McCoy or Cody Ford would be great. Chase Winovich, Byron Murphy, Rock Ya-Sin, or Greedy Williams would be my picks for the defensive side.

Also, Rosen to Miami rumors continue to swirl. Arizona officially has zero leverage. They’ve drafted Murray and the Skins and Giants, the two other teams that have been in contact with Arizona, both drafted QBs in round 1.

If I’m Miami, whatever they were discussing, whether it be a second or third rounder, now drops at least one round. I would be thrilled if they walk away with Wilkins, Taylor/McCoy, and Rosen in the first three rounds.

Because there’s a completely new head coach and offensive coordinator now. A coordinator that has had some success with a traditional pocket passer with somewhat limited mobility and not elite arm strength but good touch, timing and anticipation. Also Ryan Tannehill is no longer in the roster and the only other options are Ryan Fitzpatrick and training camp bodies.

I’m not saying Rosen is going to be Brady, but seriously, he’s a few crappy starts on the worst team in football removed from being the 10th overall pick last year. I would give up a third for him without batting an eye.

He also now has an Aaron Rodgers-sized FU chip on his shoulder. That can’t hurt.

I hope passing on Haskins doesn’t come back to bite them.
Unlike some of the other QB’s in this draft, I think Haskins actually was a first round talent. I didn’t really expect him to be there at 13, so just mentally I wasn’t really prepare for that scenario....I’ve been pretty vocal and committed to the, burn it down - bring in as much young talent as you can and let them play - wait until next year for QB plan - so I’m not disappointed or upset...I can just live without him turning into a star.

As for Rosen - I’m kind of on the fence.
I see the logic in thinking there is value there. Especially if they were thinking of using a mid-late pick on a QB anyway. There is a price where you can argue it makes sense to bring Rosen in even if he only amounted to a quality backup.
That said, a larger part of me thinks, why bother. And it’s actually because I think Rosen is good... but likely not great. To me the biggest nightmare is another Tannehill situation, and I really think that is the most likely outcome for Rosen’s career. One of those guys that’s good enough to have a job, but you never feel all that great about the situation.

Completely understand regarding jumping on the Tannehill wheel of QB mediocrity. That’s why I think if they trade for Rosen, he plays all season and they err aggressively on the side of franchise QB or bust.

If he leads you to 6-10 and puts up so-so numbers, you draft a QB in 2020. If he miraculously leads you to the playoffs or near the playoffs and puts up good to very good numbers, maybe you give him another year. I might still draft a QB.

We know Fitzpatrick isn’t the long term answer. I don’t see the harm in letting Rosen be the guy this year and seeing if he can be the answer.

Well, here we are.

Miami has traded for Josh Rosen after trading down, giving up pick 60 and a 2020 5th round draft pick.

I’ll reiterate what I said before. This is a no lose situation for Miami. He’s owed peanuts. Miami still has a stockpile of draft picks in 2020. They get a full year to evaluate him and see him in person. I’m a fan of the move from a value perspective. This is a smart decision and Miami is benefitting from Arizona’s awful management.

It’s really good value and a no-brainer to bring Rosen in.

Worst case, he stinks for the year, Miami fans can once again irrationally over-celebrate a meaningless regular season game or two, and the Dolphins focus on the deep 2020 draft to get their quarterback of the future.

I agree. Isabella + future 5th for Rosen is a steal. Giants should have figured something out, since the don't have a 2nd I believe, instead of getting Jones.

Chris Greir was asked last night what changed between last year, when they could have possibly traded up for Rosen, and this year.

He said coaching staffs. Last year he wasn’t graded as a top 5 or top 10 talent for them, which would have prompted them to trade up. Obviously O’Shea and Flores value him highly enough to trade away their lowered 2nd rounder.

Think about the Patriots offense and what Brady excels at. Accuracy. Timing. Anticipation. Mental processing. These are the same things Rosen excels at. Again, I don’t think Rosen is Brady or will be Brady, but they’re similar types of players and it would make a lot of sense why NE was reportedly interested in him last year and why Flores and O’Shea are interested in him now.

From appearances they valued slow decision-making, inability to change plays at the LOS, no pocket awareness, athleticism and a strong arm.

Rosen on paper is fine. Rosen as leader of offense? Teammates didn’t like him and he’s been labeled a petulant, spoiled brat.

I mean he was labeled a spoiled brat because he didn’t take instruction at Dilfer’s passing camp when he was like 16. Everything I heard this week was he handled this entire draft situation like a complete professional, showing up early and working hard as if he were going to be the starter in 2019.

Maturity is something that comes with time and maybe Rosen is maturing as we speak. He might never be the rah-rah leader of a team, but Aaron Rodgers is a multi-time NFL MVP and a Super Bowl MVP and is a colossal asshole that doesn’t speak with his family.

I would strongly disagree with you pocket awareness statement. I saw him climb the pocket and escape pressure in his rookie year better than Ryan Tannehill did in year 7.

Either way, this is essentially a zero risk move. Replace Ryan Fitzpatrick with Rosen as the tank commander for 2019 and nothing changes. We know Fitz is not the answer. Rosen has a chance at being the answer.

This all resonates with me. I don't view Roethlisberger or Rodgers as awesome team leaders but they both have rings and will end up in Canton. Rodgers may actually be a decent comp personality-wise.

In case you weren’t sure if Miami was trying to become the Patriots South, they drafted Chandler Cox, FB out of Auburn.

I like what Miami did in the draft as a whole. Obviously the roster still has a lot of holes but this was never a one offseason rebuild.

Watching Rosen obviously becomes the central storyline to the 2019 season, as well as monitoring the 2020 eligible QBs.

Not really a Dolphins point, but since there seems like there's at least some chance they'll be looking for a QB next year, did anybody have Murray, Jones and Haskins as the top three QBs in the draft this time last year?

Haskins, maybe. Murray if he had declared he was going to play football instead of baseball.

But your point is valid. Every year players rise and fall. It seems 2020 is the year of Tua, barring a major injury or collapse, unless someone like Fromm or Herbert or Love take a big step forward.
