Development camp is first up, starting tomorrow. It runs through Friday and all sessions are open to the public at Warrior in Brighton. Roster:

Forward:

Samuel Asselin, Jack Becker, John Beecher, Matt Brown, Nathan Burke, Casey Dornbach, Curtis Hall, Mike Hardman, Jakub Lauko, Matias Mantykivi, Drew O’Connor, Quinn Olson, Justin Richards, Linus Sandin, Jake Schmaltz, Pavel Shen, Oskar Steen, Jack Studnicka, Nate Suesce, Nolan Walker, Marek Zachar

Defense:

Axel Andersson, Victor Berglund, Cameron Clarke, Brandon Estes, John Maniscalco, Dustyn McFaul, Nick Wolff, Cooper Zech

Goalies:

John Corcoran, Taylor Gauthier, Kyle Keyser, Jeremy Swayman, Daniel Vladar

All 2018 and 2019 draft picks are coming except for Roman Bychkov. Studnicka and perhaps Steen are the 2 players that jump out as possibly playing in the NHL this year. Another intriguing name is Cooper Zech. Undersized offensive lefty defenseman. He left Ferris State after 1 year and signed a ATO and 2019-2020 contract with Providence. Worth keeping an eye on, he could parlay a nice dev camp and AHL season into an NHL contract like Connor Clifton did.

I'm guessing Vaakanainen has "graduated"? Interesting given that he's the same age as Studnicka and both are expected to push for NHL time this season

Yes players that have played In an NHL typically do not attend development camp.

I’m interested to see Lauko’s improvement from last year. He had a great camp in 2018.
I think he has an outside shot of seeing the NHL this season, in addition to Steen and Studnicka as cshea mentioned.

Does anyone know if Lauko is AHL eligible? Usually Canadian junior players aren't until they're 21, but he's already played professionally in Europe so I'm not sure if that necessarily applies to him.

The rules are so convoluted that I have no idea about Lauko, but my guess would be that he can’t play in the AHL next season.

Also, with regards to Vaak, I think they consider a player as graduating after the played spends a year as a pro in the organization. I can’t remember many players who played a full season in Providence and were then brought back for dev camp. Both Studnicka and Vaak were black aces skating/practicing through the end of the Finals, so the only real difference between the two is Vaak spent the season with Providence while Studnicka came on late after his junior season.

I would imagine they want Studnicka in a leadership role during camp as well. It seems he’s the closest thing they’ve had in a while that looks like a top 6 center prospect. His upside is higher than anyone they have in the system right now.

Random thoughts:

Axel Anderson will be an interesting guy to watch, and comparing him to Zech given the above seems inevitable.

Oscar Steen put up some great numbers last year in Europe. Seems like he’s the second best offensive player in camp behind Studnicka.

I like Jakub Lauko. He’s a fun player.

Wonder what Quinn Olson shows. Relatively unknown player and seeing him up against his peers is a good early look.

Early look at Beecher, which will be fun.

I'm intrigued by Sam Asselin. He's an overager out of the Q they just signed. Total shit disturber who led the q in goals. He took a major step toward this year offensively after being traded to halifax. Here's hoping he's a late bloomer and not just a guy taking advantage of younger competition.

Studnicka, Lauko and Keyser won’t skate, which is kind of a bummer. They get a break because of playing/skating deep into the spring. Studnicka and Keyser were Black Aces, Lauko played on the Memorial Cup winning team.

FWIW, Divver commenting that Beecher and Shen looked good today, albeit it was only drills.

Hard to believe as it feels like Game 6 was just yesterday, but the rookies report tomorrow and have games this weekend. Captains practice also starts tomorrow, with main camp opening in a week and a half or so.

Here’s the roster for the rookie tourney:

Forward

Samuel Asselin, Anders Bjork, Cameron Hughes, Jakub Lauko, Pavel Shen, Robert Lantossi, Oskar Steen, Jack Studnicka, Trent Frederic, Jacob Gaucher, Dante Hannoun*, Alex Oliver-Voyer*, Scott Conway*, Tom Marchin*, Joona Koppanen

Defense

Axel Andersson, Urho Vaakanainen, Wiley Sherman, Cooper Zech, Alex Solovyev, Max Martin*, Jordan Sambrook*, Andrew Perrott*, Riley McCourt*

Goalies

Kyle Keyser, Dan Vladar, Taylot Gauthier*

*= invitee

Bjork getting some work in as he continues to rehab his shoulder. In addition to Bjork, I’d say Steen, Studnicka, Frederic and Vaakanainen have real shots to help the big club at some point this season so I’d hope to see those guys dominate a tourney like this. At least as much as one can in 2/3 games with little practice time. Shen is another intriguing guy who will begin his first NA pro year down in Providence.

Schedule:

3:30pm Friday against the Penguins
7:00 pm Saturday against the Sabres
9:30 am Monday against Jack Hughes and the Devils

Lauko is another guy who could maybe make the jump this season, especially if he is AHL eligible. Which I still have not been able to figure out, but I believe he may be. If he was on loan from his pro contact in Europe, he would be AHL eligible, otherwise he’s not.

And I definitely agree that these players should be dominating a tournament like this.

I think Lauko goes back to junior unless he blows the doors off them in camp. Providence seems crowded, if he’s even eligible. I’m not sure there is enough ice time, he may be better off getting 18-20 a night and dominating in the Q.

The Providence forward groups will be something like this:

Jack Studnicka, Zach Senyshyn, Oskar Steen, Karson Kuhlman, Ryan Fitzgerald, Cameron Hughes, Pavel Shen, Anders Bjork, Trent Frederic, Paul Carey, Brendan Gaunce, Samuel Asselin, Robert Lantossi, Brendan Woods, Joona Koppanen, Peter Cehlarik

That is 16 F there without Lauko. 1 or 2 of the Senyshyn, Studnicka, Bjork, Kuhlman group could break camp with the big club, and maybe they lose Carey, Cehlarik or Gaunce on waivers at the end of camp, but it still seems rather crowded and perhaps not the best spot for Lauko. Maybe Lantosi gives up and goes home or they send Woods down to the ECHL.

McQuaid is among the players skating at Captain’s practice. It’s not unusual for local guys to skate with them for a few days before camps start, but I wonder if McQuaid could be a PTO guy for the B’s. They are already bringing Alex Petrovic in, but they’re down potentially 4 defenseman so another body might be needed. Obviously they’re familiar with McQuaid who is a UFA.

I think I’m a lot higher on Lauko than most, but you’re right Providence is looking crowded. I think 2 and maybe 3 of the players in your list will break camp with Boston though. One plus to staying in the Q would be PP time, which he didn’t get last season and wouldn’t get in Providence.

Generally I think the Bruins prefer having guys in the system if they’re physically/mentally ready, which I don’t think is a worry with him

I only see a PTO to McQuaid if both Carlo and McAvoy aren't signed and aren't close. His name is on the Cup for the B's, but he has had massive injury issues for years, and I'm worried about his ability to play top 4 level skill for top 4 level minutes all season. I would be happy to be proven wrong.

A PTO is basically a no-risk proposition. No sense in not doing it if it's clear upfront. Plus it's doing a solid for an ex-player by giving him a chance to showcase himself to other teams.

Bruins prospects won 4-3 against Pittsburgh. Bjork had a goal and an assist. Studnicka and Lauko also scored.

Your first post this morning is so much better than your second. Watching the prospects skate is a beautiful thing, thank you for the link.

Bergy's groin injury is scary. That's what seemed to hold him back in the Finals, too, right? It's been almost 3 months, and that it is still bothering him sounds really bad. Thank goodness they have 82 games to get all these injuries worked out, but hopefully they can find a way to still be competitive to start the season, so they don't have a ton of ground to make up in mid to late season.

Yeah, it is concerning. This is the 3rd season in a row where he’s been limited in camp. He missed the first 5 games of the 17/18 season with an injury. He ended that Tampa series that season with a groin injury which he had surgery on over the summer and was then limited in camp with back spasms which the team attributed to the groin surgery. So still having groin problems is concerning to me. He’s 34 now. I would like to see the Bruins steal a page from the NBA and have “load management” nights off for Bergeron, Chara, Krejci, etc. I know it is going to be competitive at the top of the division, but I’d rather slide to 3/4 in the division and go in with these guys healthy and rested than having home ice and a banged up and worn down group.

We’re on the eve of camp. Here’s the cshea preview:

Forward

Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak
DeBrusk - Krejci - XXX
Heinen - Coyle - XXX
Nordstrom* - Kuraly - Wagner
Backes, Lindholm

As of now, I really see 2 battle spots, winger on the 1st line (or 2nd if they bump Pasta down), and a 3rd line winger. I put an asterisk with Nordstrom because he is still working his way back from a foot injury and Sweeney said they would take it slow with him. So that may open up a 3rd F spot. I’d probably handicap things like this:

- Ritchie gets 1 of the 2 RW openings, likely 3rd line RW
- The 2nd opening I think is Bjork's to lose with Studnicka, Cehlarik , Kuhlman and Senyshyn as his main competition.

Maybe a kid like Steen, who had a good prospects camp, surprises and pushes for a spot right out of the gate, but I think those are the primary guys to watch during camp. The bottom 6 is very crowded so it’ll be interesting to see how things shake out. Kuhlman and Senyshyn are waiver exempt so that may work against them. Then there’s the Backes conundrum, keep him or send him to Providence?

Defense

Chara - McAvoy
Krug - Carlo
Grzelyck - Clifton
Kampfer, Miller?

I don’t think there is a ton to see here if we assume they get McAvoy and Carlo signed before the end of camp. Moore is out long term. Miller is hurt too but he maybe ready to go sometime during camp. Clifton could be a cap casualty to begin the year as he is waiver exempt. They are deep here. I think the more interesting thing will be watching some of the kids get more ice time during the preseason and seeing what they could bring in an in-season call up when the inevitable injury bug hits. Vaakanainen is promising, Lauzon flashed at times and Zboril is kind of at a crossroads. They should get big minutes in camp/pre-season games.

No goalie section because that is set in stone.
