2019 All-Star Game Rosters

Once again, I'm back for my favorite stupid exercise of the MLB regular season -- my attempt to figure out who makes the All-Star Game!

Rules are all follows -- until we get voting results, I just put the best choices in the starter slots. Once we get voting leaders, they get slotted in and the rest of the roster falls as expected. This year, things are different -- MLB is having a "primary" where the top 3 voter-getters at each position get put into an "election day" where voters pick between three players for a starting position (top nine for outfielders). Some of this is based on stats, some is based on names. Example: I think Mookie Betts will make the team basically no matter what -- even if his numbers are worse than Tommy Pham.

Anyhow, this is what I got right now.

With the season he's having, you don't see Devers making the squad?

I think Francisco Lindor somehow finds his way onto the roster. He missed the first 19 games, and there are several quality shortstops, but he's still having an excellent season and the game is in Cleveland. Santana and Hand are deserving All-Stars, but neither has the personality or stardom to play top diplomat/host like Lindor, who's one baseball's biggest young and likeable stars. From a marketing angle this is what MLB should want.

I think at this rate you're likely to see Marcell Ozuna get the nod in the NL OF. He's having a very strong season including the traditional counting stats, which are often weighed highly for these types of selections. 16 HRs, 42 Runs, 51 RBIs. He's having a better season than Harper and Marte unless you are buying into two months of Fangraphs defensive WAR metrics. I can also see how Harper might be on as your sole representative from Philly.

Eddie Rosario, LF for the Twins, is currently 1st in HRs and 2nd in RBI in the AL. The ASG is in Minneapolis this year. I think Rosario is a lock for the AL team.

I'm guessing Lance Lynn is supposed to be Mike Minor. Lynn is thoroughly mediocre and Joey Gallo meets the team rep requirement.

He's got a shot if the voters do the right thing and keep Springer and Gallo over Mookie as starters (Trout is obviously a lock), but I have feeling Mookie makes it on the fan vote (which he doesn't deserve this year), which will push Gallo (or Springer) to the bench, making it more difficult for Rosario and his sub .900 OPS to get in as a reserve.

There's so many good 3B in the AL. Right now he's great but he's not having a better season than Bregman, Chapman or Dozier. All three are just... better.

Yes, that is correct. Oopsy.

Dietrich's not on the ballot, believe it or not, so if he makes it, it's as a reserve (unless there's a super well-organized write-in campaign). Voit is on there, but as a 1B, so I don't think he can randomly be switched to DH?

He has Realmuto on the team, so Harper doesn't necessarily have to make the team if Realmuto does.

Josh Bell should be the starting 1B on the NL team

It's really 6 of one, half dozen of another with Alonso and Bell.

Bell's got better slash stats, Alonso has homer dingers, better defense. They'll both make the team, but if voters in New York vs Pittsburgh have a voice, it'll be Alonso starting.

My mistake, sir, I didn't see you had his listed at DH ... thought you'd left him off. Apologies

Glad to see Polanco getting the recognition he deserves. Twins locking him up this past offseason through 2025 (age 31) at a ridiculously team friendly contract was...fortuitous for them.

Sad that Rendon is so far down on the list. Guy is an amazing 3b, never been to an Allstar game i dont think

A few updates thanks to a voting update from MLB... because the Mariners traded Encarnacion, we need a Mariner, and Vogelbach slots in really nicely. Sure he's only played 17 games at first this season, but we need one and he 's by far the most qualified candidate from that team. Not much left to say, but here we go....

Despite being 2nd in the entire AL in fWAR (among all position players!), Xander Bogaerts is a distant 6th in fan voting for AL SS. Hopefully this injustice will be mitigated by him being added as a reserve; if his fan voting rank somehow causes him to be left off the roster entirely, I will be very upset.

It’s a nice accolade for the player and all but the Red Sox will have just gotten back from London for one day off and then 6 games in Toronto and Detroit before the break. Rest would probably be nice.

Seems the fans agree with you. Not having bogarts or Devers (or even Vaz?) as a "finalist" seems absurd. but whatever.

Verlander currently the odds-on leader for AL starting pitcher (depending on how rotation falls, as always), with Morton, Giolito, Berrios, and Odorizzi in the running. Verlander's 0.75 WHIP is hard to ignore.

Here's hoping they all stay home, put their feet up, drink some beer and have a good time off. I'd be fine if no Red Sox went to the made-for-TV mid-season exhibition. Please - no reserve or pitching roles. Anyone disagree?

Yes and no, I like that maybe Xander, Devers or another Sock hits a homer or makes a great play.
Okay it doesn't make a difference but is a reason to watch. But it doesn't make a difference and, although it's weird to say at this moment, a little time off for everybody couldn't hurt.

Looks like all of the "MLB choice" players in the AL were forced, due to the one-player-per-team minimum, except for Mike Minor

Mookie in and Xander out is a total joke.

Hope Mookie does the honorable thing and passes to rest, and lets a more deserving OF'er in.

I generally don't watch the ASG unless I'm pretty bored, but despite my being as into baseball right now as I have been in decades, the rosters seem pretty underwhelming. Is that just me?

Also the NL only has two relievers (Hader/Yates)? That seems odd.

I'm sorry, but Aaron Boone whining about Gleyber Torres not making the All-Star Team is obnoxious.

When not facing the Orioles, he's got a 264/326/421 split. He's fine. He's good, especially for a middle infielder. But his numbers against the Orioles are inflating his number so god damn much. It makes no sense to put a .747 OPS hitter vs every team but one on the roster.
