Time for a thread after a dominant 4-0 start. DVOA has them with the 6th best 4-game start since 1986. They aren't that good, but they're legitimately good. How good, it's hard to say, because they haven't played anyone above average yet. But they've been blowing out the crappy teams they've played: +70 point differential after four games, and it could be even higher (they dominated Pittsburgh in Week 3, out-gaining them by 200 yards, but the score was close because they fumbled 5 times and had two tipped INTs).

In particular, they have the best defensive front in the league. They have spent a ton of draft capital there (3 top-10 picks) in the last few years and it's starting to pay off. Buckner made the Pro Bowl last year and Bosa looks like a star after only four games. Having also added Dee Ford in the off-season, they now have multiple guys who consistently command double-teams. It's a matchup nightmare for OLs and it has made the rest of the defense, in particular the secondary, look much better than they probably are.

On offense, Kyle Shanahan is one of the best offensive minds in the league. The RB-by-committee has been extremely effective running Shanahan's trademark zone scheme, they are averaging 200 rushing yards/game and 5.2 yards/attempt, even though their best lineman, Joe Staley, is out with a broken leg. Jimmy G has been solid but not spectacular, but he mostly hasn't needed to be (the 49ers have the fewest pass attempts in the league). With Gronk retired, George Kittle is probably the best TE in the league. The WRs are still something of a work in progress, but the effective running game + Shanahan's schemes get them open a lot.

Expectations before the season were to compete for a playoff spot. They are certainly in position to do that, but as they're in a tough division with LA and Seattle both solid, not even that is solidified yet. They have a real test this weekend at LA.

The real key to this team is: Ford-Armstead-Buckner-Bosa. Niners are getting pressure with just the front 4 and shutting down the run (the only team that hasn't allowed a rushing TD this season). That solves a lot of secondary issues (has made Witherspoon and now mosely look like quality DBs).

Very curious to see this week's game. Like you say @coremiller it will be a huge test - short week for the Niners, extra long week for the Rams, Rams pissed off and coming off back to back losses, and the Niners starting to get a lot of positive press (like the DVOA stats you cite - fun fact, their 4 game start on D was better statistically than the Pats first 4 games by DVOA).

Their FB, Kyle Juszczyk, is a big part of their running game and got carted off Monday night -- after which, their running game went to shit. He's out w an MCL sprain for 4-6 weeks.

Thank you for the thread. It's certainly going to be interesting to see how this all plays out. If Jimmy G can maybe start to throw more passes and maintain his completion rate (i think 7th in the league at around 70%) and keep his interceptions down it could be fun. He could turn into who we thought he was!!

"the 49ers have the fewest pass attempts in the league"

That stood out to me. No wonder why this team reminds of Harbaugh's first team from 2011. Jimmy has looked simply ok to me so far. It will be interesting to see how he responds when teams start to take away the run.

He'll be fine. The Shanahan offense has tons of play-action to punish teams for overcommitting to the run. What will be more of a challenge is if they fall behind and have to abandon the run.

Just like seeing Jimmy-G succeed, I'm conflicted about the specific body part, SN :)
Jimmy G. is certainly easy on the eyes.

It was also the fourth quarter and they were up by 28 points and just running out the clock. As good as Juszczyk is, I'm skeptical the FB getting hurt will totally derail the offense. Staley's injury is a bigger problem, esp. in pass protection.

I am not sure if all teams will be able to take away the run. I really think that Kyle S calls that good of a game.
It would take a really solid defense.

Things just got a lot harder.... with all-pro LT Staley already out another 4 weeks, 1st rd pick and one of the best run blockers in the league RT McGlinchey also now out 4-6 weeks.

The niners LT and RT against the Rams will be a 6th round pick and an undrafted FA (their swing tackle was hurt for the year in the preseason).

Let's see if Shanahan can scheme around this.

I'm not sure that has anything to do with him getting the job permanently. Callahan isn't the solution, he's just someone that's been a head coach before so as a mid-season thing, it probably makes sense to give it to him.
It doesn't have anything to do with him getting the job permanently. I thought we were discussing this year. My reply was in context to the following:

Seriously. Imagine if all three QBs end up in the conference title games. Or even playing on divisional weekend.
which is a real possibility for this year. The direct direct reply to this message followed.

With potentially two former Patriot backup QB's in head coaching positions.
I took it to mean this year, but I can see where it might be future wish casting for KOC.

Well there was a lot of scheme to make that makeshift o line stand up, but it was enough.

It was mainly enough because of Ford-armstead-Buckner-boss (and Thomas and blair). The niners front 4 is insane.

Two good articles:

Scott Pioli on Kyle Shanahan via Peter King:
The team’s got a little bit of the Shanahan ethos. America doesn’t know him yet. He’s not as polished as his dad, veteran coach Mike Shanahan, was. Then again, he’s 39. He’s got time. What he is, is tough and an excellent play-designer and play-caller. He won’t say it, but he’s the kind of a just-try-to-knock-this-chip-off-my-shoulder coach who players respect. And they respect Shanahan because they know he puts them in the best position to win.

All opponents can be beaten. All opponents we respect. We can find something in everyone we play to exploit. Who does that sound like? “I’ve never met a coach who reminds me of Bill Belichick as much as Kyle,” said former Patriots and Falcons front-office man Scott Pioli, who has worked with both.

“Assume you’ll be watching Lamar Jackson against the Rams,” I said to Shanahan on Sunday night.

“We won’t have a fun Monday/Tuesday preparing for him,” he said. “But we’ll be ready by Sunday.”
Also, Jimmy G apparently gave a pep talk to the 49ers Offense to spur their rout of Green Bay:

"I think my favorite thing in the game was -- I think it was after our third drive, we scored right away then had two three-and-outs that weren't very good," tight end George Kittle said after the game. "Jimmy got the whole offense together and was like, 'Hey! You got to play with intensity. Our defense is playing their a--es off. We just got to take advantage of those opportunities they are giving us. Because Aaron Rodgers is one heck of Hall-of-Fame quarterback and we can't give him the opportunity to come back and beat us.'

"So that was really awesome then everything after that just kind of took off."
One might presume the words "laser focus" were involved.
