For me the two downsides to Houston are Harden's endless parades to the foul line and D'Antoni's endless whining about how they don't get enough calls. I've got no problem with the small ball approach, in fact I like diversity in the league with different strategies, and wouldn't call it a gimmick. And I enjoy Westbrook's game, he plays with an energy and ferocity I respect.
This is well said. At least for me, it's hard not to be thrilled to see Westbrook's strengths unleashed and for him to quiet his many critics. As you say, his intensity and motor command respect.

But, jesus, the whining. If you're going to be so damn dependent on touch fouls on 3pa after Harden has rammed his shoulder into the defender, at least have the grace to have a little equanimity if calls go against you.

This one is my fault guys. As lead got to 10+ I turned it off, and was catching up on some reading. As they pulled with 3 or so late, I turned it back on.

So, my bad.

The Celtics #1 and 2 offensive options had an off night. Zero concerns about the d'Antoni whine machine.
If anything the Celtics have clearly leapfrogged them. I haven't felt that way for many years.

I hope there isn't any friction between Smart and JB? Didn't like the look of Jaylen going down and his teammates walking away, TNT did a good job showing that (while they can't get a replay down after numerous non-calls on the Rockets)

Man, it is so frustrating going through this video right now. Westbrook got 3-4 completely unconscionable calls--I can see why Smart was upset after the game.

DJ wasn’t a high draft pick and can’t continue to be gifted these opportunities. He had a moment in the spotlight with all eyes on him (fans, teammates, fellow internet posters, etc) and he flat out didn’t get the job done. You can’t keep giving players the ball when they haven’t earned it. What kind of message does that send to the rest of the posters?

I take more of a Phoenix Suns approach to poster development.

The Rockets play such a weird, mechanical, repetitive offensive style that it didn't feel appropriate to separate clips into individual defensive highlights--things only make sense as a whole. So here are the 1st and 2nd half defensive possessions for the Celtics, in all their glory and shame.

You'll see that Houston really, really likes to set early screens to try and generate switches for Harden, often to get Jaylen off of him. If this were a playoff series, I might try fighting through those screens harder, and live with Harden maybe jacking some early, out-of-rhythm 3s if that's his counter.

I honestly cannot overstate what a grinding slog it is to watch 100 Houston Rockets offensive possessions in a row. It's not fun. It feels like being trapped inside some weird basketball Groundhog Day.

Smart needs to stop sniffing his own defensive farts and take responsibility. He was yelling at JB after the Harden layup to make it 106-98, but he called out the switch literally as the screen was happening, way too late.

You are watching two of the most explosive offensive players the history of the game has ever seen on the floor together with an offense designed to give them the space to optimize their talent. Am I the only one who appreciates watching historical greatness every night? Am I insane for clicking on as many Rockets games as I can? The stuff Westbrook is doing this year is off the charts ridiculous.

I feel like every Rockets discussion comes down to people stating their personal aesthetic preferences, and other people telling them that, well actually, Harden and Westbrook are really really good.

No shit they’re good. It’s a complete non sequitur.

I can get watching them to see the greatness of those two. Westbrook is a complete menace with the floor spread. My main complaint is that the offensive setup feels too static.

Maybe the best way I can phrase it is that prime Barry Bonds was an amazing talent, but baseball as a sport is too static for my taste. It feels like the Rockets have baseball-ized offense to a degree (although that play they had to free House for 3 and blow things open in the 4th was pretty, and an illustration of how great basketball can be, in spite of the best-laid plans of Beard and men.)

None of this applies to the Rockets defense btw. It’s fun to watch them scrap out ways to get it done with Covington as the center.

We talk all the time about "off" nights shooting, as well as off nights defensively. Sometimes it's possible for teams have off nights on the communications front as well. These guys are hyper-competitive, and Smart is one of the most hyper-competitive among them. A rotation get missed, and then a teammate makes an incorrect conclusion about who did what wrong when, and it spirals, especially when everyone is obviously frustrated with the officiating.

Garnett would sometimes get on Pierce and Allen and Rondo. What matters more, IMO, is how the situation is handled in the locker room after the game, and again before the next one. Neither Smart nor Brown seem like the type that simply slip on their Air Pods and tune everything out until they meet up with their posse after the game.

Thanks for doing this. It's hard for me to get through one quarter (haven't finished the game yet) so I can't imagine what it's like to cut the entire game into two videos.

While I was watching the 3Q, it occurred to me - people never really block Harden's shot anyways, so I wonder what would happen if his defenders simply didn't jump and just stuck their hand straight up and tried to get as close as possible? I first wonder if his shooting percentage would change at all as he doesn't really seemed to be fazed by contests, and even if he would shoot better, maybe it would be offset by the reduced number of FTs he would take?

Never find out I'm sure.

Grant and JB were getting close to this approach. It’s tough though: he shot 7-15. I think the overall gameplan of trying to limit his overall comfort by hard-trapping infrequently was sound, but the communication and rotations weren’t good enough to support it.

I agree with this whole take.

I think I was more responding to a narrative that’s gained traction on Celtics Twitter of “omg Jaylen is such an unaware help defender” that I think isn’t always fair.

I also have seen a lot of variability in Smart’s defense the past month or so. It’s VERY fixable, but he talks about himself as a DPOY candidate and it’s pretty delusional currently (based on recent performance, not potential. Also he was really good overall against Houston.)

Imo, critiquing individual sequences for defensive effort will reveal that even "elite defenders" screw up or take plays off. It makes sense - despite mythology to the contrary, humans probably aren't capable of giving max effort on every play.

This isn't to say people can't be critical of how a defender did during a particular play. Its just that like anything else, small sample sizes can yield results that aren't consistent with the larger trend. For example, I saw Rudy Gobert make a few mistakes last night but I would still consider him elite as a defender. YRMV.

Smart called out that screen in plenty of time. Not sure what Jaylen was doing
I don’t want to over-litigate it, since it’s just one play, but am I missing something? It looks like Smart points a split-second before Harden makes contact, which is way too late to do anything, especially when you’re locked in guarding someone like Harden.

If the coverage was to switch any action involving Westbrook/Harden, that’s a different story, and that may well have been the case.

IDK because we can't hear them or what Brad's game plan was, but to play Devil's Advocate.

1. The Celtics wings switch a lot, could have been a basic switch. Was JB suppose to stay on the strong side block? JB did nothing to help slow RWB down. At least JT tried to help at the rim from the weakside block

OR

2. @ 8:50 when Smart's feet hit the 3pt line he turns his head to the left (sees' Hardens pick coming) and waves his left hand to Jaylen to pick up Russ. All Brown has to do is cut RWB off from the rim, if Russ takes a quick, pull up mid-range 2 you can live with that down 6 with 4+minuts left in the game

OR

3. I'm not sure Jaylen warned Smart of the Harden pick coming up from behind him. Maybe JB wasn't vocal?

OR

4. Marcus was frustrated with Harden/RWB going off all game, on a national TV game. This puts to bed any chance he had at DPOY (if he ever had a chance?). He had an emotional outburst, not the first time Smart has had one of those.

#2 is the most plausible IMO and agree with the Moops (if we want to point fingers) but this game was lost for several other reasons. Live, learn, get better next time. Look forward to Houston on Leap Day

If I'm going to criticize Brad for the end of the OKC game, have to give him credit for having a better plan in place to run clock at the end of 2OT. Just went with a simple Kemba/Tatum 2-man setup up top.

Record against NBA's top teams:

Bucks: 1-1 (2 to play)
Sixers: 1-3
Toronto: 2-1 (1)
Miami: 2-0 (2)
Pacers: 0-1 (2)
Lakers: 1-0 (1)
Clippers: 1-1
Harden/Westbrook/Refs: 0-1 (1,000)
Dallas: 2-0
Denver: 1-1
Utah: 0-0 (2)
OKC: 1-0 (1)

Overall: A respectable 12-9, with 12 games remaining. They've shown they can play with anybody, and I posit that if they continue to gel, they can be a nightmare matchup for most teams. Don't know yet if they can beat the Bucks, and the Sixers would be a nightmare matchup in the first round.

There are concerns, bench scoring and health being primary among them. But every contender has weaknesses and/or health concerns this year. And each one has their own nightmare playoff matchup to deal with. Priorities once everyone returns from the Windy City:

1.) Seeding. Can't afford to slip to 4 or 5.

2.) Load management: The nice thing about their top depth is that they can afford to rest one of their starters most nights and not lose too much. They were missing a starter for each game agains the Clips (Hayward, Brown), and took LAC to OT both games.

3.) Karma. Keep things positive. It's still a slog of a season to go, and there will be difficult losses in there.

Sorry, but rookie development is down the list right now. Give Langford his spots, but expect that there will be a lot of DNP-CD's down the stretch.

I'm behind; just watched the play. The issue is that it wasn't really a screen; I think Harden was moving towards Tucker to use him as a screen. But Harden made contact with Smart so he thought it was a screen and switched to Harden while JB was focused on the next action. Smart yelled because he thought it was straightforward but I bet when he watches the film he'll understand it's not as straightforward as it seems. If Smart was closer to RWB, I don't think Harden touches him at all.

I'm not that fearful of the Sixers. Yes, the record is terrible, but there were extenuating circumstances (players out, B2B, etc.).

Yep, that was my initial thought: Marcus get up on RWB (I hate when the defender picks up on-ball defense at the 3pt line) BUT MS/Celtics were trying to bait Russ to take a quick ISO jump shot. Plus every time the C's got up on Russ/Harden they got whistled for a foul. I believe MS wanted to build a wall at the nail and figured JB was behind him for help.

Brown has to be more aware IMO. Stopping rim runs is job #1 for the defense especially with the ball in Russ's hands in that time/situation. I also don't care for Smart screaming at JB and then walking away when Brown was injured afterward. Water under the bridge, regular season fog of war stuff

a slightly different set of circumstances

also, Brad didn't have JB/Theis to put on the floor, who are the guys I'd want yanked to run the clock out up multiple scores.

That’s a lot of excuses to lose every game. It’s similar to what I heard on VSiN yesterday with all the Pelicans excuses as to why they were 0-3 vs OKC leading up to last nights game. Sometimes a team simply owns you based on matchups or are in your head mentally knowing that you own them.

I don’t put much stock in the Celtics blowing out Miami and Denver in Boston when those teams were on road B2Bs. I don’t put much stock in the Sixers doing the same to Boston, particularly when guarding Embiid requires a lot a of help, recovery, and effort.

The thing is, the C's haven't lost "every game" to Philly. Boston pummeled the Sixers in the teams' most recent meeting, so there's some cause for hope. That said, I agree that in general the C's match up poorly with the Sixers.

Judging playoff success against an opponent based on regular season records always has lots of caveats. 3 or 4 games is a small sample over the slogfest. Injuries, back-to-back's, and flukes come into play. Maybe there is one game where everyone is healthy, and a key player gets into foul trouble early. Or a team suddenly shoots 0.500 (or 0.150) from the 3 point line for a game. Or a team misses 10 free throws and loses by 6.

Last season, the Celtics went 1-2 against the Bucks, but one of those losses was by one point on the road. And the Bucks were 3-1 against the Raptors during the season.

Still, when the eye test says a team is likely to cause matchup problems, and when you go 1-3 against that team primarily due to those matchup issues, it's reasonable to conclude that you don't want to face that team in the playoffs. And you definitely do not want to be the 5 seed if said team is the 4. Spots 2-6 in the East are all up for grabs right now, and none of those teams are going away any time soon.

Could the Celtics beat the Sixers in the opening round of the playoffs? Yes, if they can open at home. However, there are better options if they want to avoid a first round exit, which would itself be a tremendous disappointment after the progress made this season.

I don’t really disagree with any of this. One thing wrt the Sixers is that I worry about them for the Celtics offense more than for the defensive matchup. The Celtics would live or die there primarily based on whether they could attack favorable mismatches without getting stagnant, something they weren’t ready at all to do early in the year, and have improved on somewhat.

+1. You've made this a point before/after games regardless of the results, so you deserve credit here.

A "December" regular-season B2B just won't be reflective of what a team/game looks like in the NBA playoffs.

The Sixers don't scare me all that much. Theis has quietly improved enough to play effective minutes vs. Embiid. Along with Kanter, who understands his role within the system. A healthy TL would also help by giving Joel another look. The Celtics have enough physicality/strength to slow down the Simmons/Embiid assault.

Besides Tatum's overall the game, my favorite thing from last night was Hayward/Grant block on Shamet with 2:25 left in OT2, followed by Tatum owning Shamet and getting to the rim. Followed by Hayward nailing a deep three late in the clock. Followed by Hayward stuffing Lou Will and it going out of bounds off Williams. Followed by Hayward's steal of the inbounds pass with 15 seconds left.

He was bad up until that point too. It was impressive to see him play out of the funk after playing for 45 minutes. Up until that point, I assumed he had no legs left and was mentally picturing himself in San Diego for a week. Hard not to love this team.

I’ll have to re-check this week since it’s hard to catch these things fully in real time, but I thought he was more engaged defensively during the game than he had been recently.

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I thought I'd drop it here, especially as things are slow with the All Star break coming up. Apparently CelticsGreenBlog does a "Comments from the other side" for each of the Celtics games. It's basically a series of real-time hot takes, same as our game thread, but by the opposing team's fans. (New to me, but I'm sure some here are familiar with it.)

For someone like me who's frequently in our own game threads, reading it is kind of bizarro, like watching some Star Trek episode where the crew of the Enterprise encounters their likenesses, but on a different planet. I read through the Clippers game thread and found it interesting, funny, crude ... kind of like ours, but with a bit more profanity. I snipped some comments below. The executive summary: they hate Doc, have soured on George, and were amazed by Tatum.
Doc is ****ing garbage. Run some ****ing plays. The **** are you doing?
Said it before gona say it again. Our Coaching is garbage as ****.
...
What happened to PG
Strained his leg chasing one of his turnovers
This team gave up solid stretch 4 and future All-Star point guard for this injury prone/choking hazard
...
I don't understand doc's offense..
There is no plan, that’s doc’s offense
...
Tatum completely outplaying Kawhi Is the saddest part of this game
I can’t remember ever seeing Kawhi get dominated on both sides of the court like this. Tatum got REAL good this year
Tatum just owned Kawhi... Damn that’s tough man
...
Thanks refs for ruining that 4 pt play and costing us the game
That wasn't a horrible call by the refs. Ball was at his waist when he got fouled. You can see Hayward pull back then he shoots. Was close but there have been much more egregious calls this year.
...
Docs gameplan is to put his 5 best offensive players together and see what happens
...
This team is not good and **** George who will miss an other 20 games smh. At this point I really think that kawhi and PG come here just to be home and build new brand not to play basketball because I seriously see no passion and a lot of injuries due to lack of training. We gave up our future for both injuries prone players and one of them is a choker.

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I thought I'd drop it here, especially as things are slow with the All Star break coming up. Apparently CelticsGreenBlog does a "Comments from the other side" for each of the Celtics games. Thanks for that, that was fun.

Boston, Philly, and the Clippers seem to have fanbases that are pessimistic as hell and whatever the opposite of “high on your own supply” is, and I’m sure I could think of others.

Which fanbases are the most delusional in terms of thinking all their prospects are amazing, the coach is a living deity, the front office is on another level, etc? Obviously if SRN is representative the Dubs have to be up there, and I see a lot of ridiculousness from Lakers’ fans re Kuzma. I’m guessing Utah and San Antonio are in this group?

I'm old enough to remember Lakers fans excited about 'Chise (Cedric Ceballos).
