I doubt that the Mets defense will make Rick’s pillow contract all that fluffy.

Rosenthal said in his notes column that the Yankees have been the most aggressive pursuer of Josh Hader. Chapman, Hader, Ottavino, Britton, Kahnle almost seems like too many high end arms. Might they trade someone in a deal?
Hader would just replace Betances so unlikely. They aren’t stopping.

Chad Green also, who shouldn’t have to do any opening this year as NY has lots of SPs now. It will be hard for NY to actually get Hader and if they did, they could move someone as you say, or they could keep all six of those guys and couple them with two long guys with options in a 8 man pen.

I think the Mets must be trading one of Syndergaard/Stroman/Matz, they're not moving deGrom, Porcello wouldn't have signed there without a guarantee he'd be in the rotation and same with Wacha and his deal of mostly incentives. Time to play 'Let's Take Advantage of Brodie' for someone...

I could at least convince myself I'm okay with a Kluber trade if they aren't selling low on him and Carrasco is back to full strength. The Indians need major league ready hitting and then more major league ready hitting. Clevinger-Bieber-Carrasco. I think Civale would do fine as the #4 starter. Round out the rotation with Plesac (or Plutko) following an opener and see if he can fend off Scott Moss and Logan Allen throughout the season. If Cleveland exceeds at anything it's developing rotation depth and getting more out of those guys than was expected.

Kluber has had a few vintage outings, but he's had no consistency since returning from a knee injury after the All-Star break in 2018. If a little bidding war off-sets the reservations teams might have about him not pitching since last May, I'd rather trade him now than hope for him to rebuild his trade value, but find out he's now more of a #3... then again, I have a history of underestimating Kluber.

The Angels ideally need at least two more SPs, and with Rendon and Simmons on the left side now, it seems like Keuchel would be a match made in heaven. Given their needs, I'm a little surprised they're publicly out on Kluber, but maybe they don't want to give up prospects unless they can't get what they need in FA.

I think the problem is that outside of Jo Adell, they probably don't have the prospects to make the best offer for Kluber. And Jo Adell is probably too much to give up for a 34 year old Kluber coming off a lost season.

That can't be the complete deal or I'm going to be sick. A relief pitcher and another Greg Allen? There has to be another move connected to this because DeShields is nothing but low ceiling redundancy.

Yeah, now they're saying that is the whole deal, no wonder NY was in there. Sorry FFA.

Cleveland is a disaster. You were a player or two from being a championship ballclub and you dismantle. I think I would rather be a Mets fan than an Indians fan. Infuriating that they offload Kluber for that shit package.

There must have been multiple teams interested at that price. That they couldn’t get more and would, in fact, accept that return, says a lot about the consensus around the league on Kluber’s value on an 18m salary.

I don't know, didn't we all get surprised with the Stroman trade too? Hard not to think this the result of GMs getting outplayed or latching onto a player instead of a consensus better package.

I fell in love with the Tribe back when they were one of the worst teams in baseball and their best players were Joe Carter and Doug Jones. Still, I always felt they were trying to improve the team -- if not for today, at least in the foreseeable future -- until the past two years. It's become very difficult to support a Dolan owned team. They aren't going to be winning titles when Lindor leaves and with that coming at a time when we'll likely lose games to a strike, who knows what shape the team will be in. So I don't understand why they couldn't cut into Dolan's expected profits to try to put them over the top the past two years and then enter full rebuild mode in 2021.

The only logic I can cling to here is that they're about to acquire a left-handed hitting outfielder who's going to cost more than what Dolan is normally willing to spend, which would mean they had to free up money and DeShields makes more sense as the 5th outfielder than Greg Allen (or Daniel Johnson). The problem is Corey Dickerson seems to be the only half-decent free agent who even fits that description. If this doesn't foreshadow the acquisition of an outfielder fitting that role, then DeShields just seems like they were blindly throwing darts at names. Regardless, every deal should have merits of its own and they just got fleeced here.

I was glad for Cubs fans in 2016, but I was pulling hard for the Indians in 2016, in part because I don't like Maddon and can't stand Chapman, in part because I love Tito and the team (featuring Mike Napoli) was very likable and because I knew they might have a limited window, while the Cubs should be able to spend big every year.

It was really too bad that Kluber was cooked by Game 7. He was so dynamite that postseason until he ran out of gas.

Bumgarner to ARI, 5 years, no money announced yet. Wow, did not see that coming.

That's a blow for Giants fans, but I don't think MadBum has 5 effective years left.

I don't either, but ARI is a very smart front office currently, so we'll see. He is around half the price per season of the Greinke deal they moved last deadline at least...

That no other team was willing to beat 5/$100 with 15 deferred for MadBum says everything you need to know.

They gotta be dealing Robbie Ray next, right? MadBum/Gallen/Ray/Weaver/Kelly/Leake.

I know money is tight, but I think Boston should try to grab Lindor to play 2B. He's a little more valuable than Kluber, so, what, Bradley and Brasier should get it done? (Kidding!) (Mostly.)

Considering what the Indians got for Kluber, I can't imagine the market for expensive pitchers is very strong.
If they pay down $36 million of his salary, 3 years of Price at $20 million is certainly a tradeable contract.

Does it? While none of Price's rumored suitors signed Bumgarner, do we know that any of them were showing strong interest at the price he was asking?
The Dodgers showed interest in Bumgarner and also in Price. The Angels are still looking for a top of the rotation starter and are still $34 million under the first luxury tax threshold. The Cardinals were in on Bumgarner and have also showed interest in Price. The White Sox are looking to spend for a pitcher. I think there is a taker out there for Price.

Right, but IMO if the Dodgers or Cards were interested in Bumgarner at HIS price he would have signed with either of them. They pretty much knew what it was going to take to sign him as that 5/100 number was out there and they refused to pay it. That's why I'm thinking that signing doesn't really affect the market for Price. I think what might drive Price's market will be the interest of another team (or teams) that think Price is the guy who puts them over the top.
