Mate, why would we not care about a club going into Administration? No one likes to see a club fall. I reckon mot of us here remember Wigan holding it down in the Prem with tiny budget, winning an FA Cup and being well regarded as a locally owned club that is a vital part of the community.

I know I care.

PS: I use the nobody cares technique as well. It's a salty bastards go to...for shame. Mon the Owls.
The majority of people here (and American footy fans in general) care for little more than the premier league, and/or a team or two in another top 4 European League. I know no one wants Wigan (or any other club) to go into administration, but I bet most people couldn’t have named what league Wigan was in, let alone be bothered to follow the trials of EFL clubs right now. Wigan may be the first, but they’re sure not going to be the last.

And while Angry Pissbum was a suitable tag, Salty Bastard would be far more apt. Cheers Mart.

As I'm from Wigan I can tell you exactly what league they're in :) There seems to be some weird circumstances surrounding this as the club only just changed owners. It sucks if they get relegated because they put together a nice little run since the restart to get themselves clear of the bottom group of teams.

The story really is remarkable...there speculation right now that Wigan’s owners, who have ties in with gambling organizations in the Philippines, allowed the club to fail because they had money on them going down. How true that is, who knows, but there seems to at least be some smoke around it.

Was reading the article in the Athletic on this .. just bizarre. I can’t quite understand the motivation (other than the unsubstantiated relegation gambling scandal) . The owner effectively sold the club to himself - in the guise of another company - and instantly put the club into administration - with a guarantee to pay off the current debt (to himself in the guise of his first company) .. do I have that right?

This is beyond shady .. maybe the relegation bet is the only sensible explanation .. it would have had to have been a whopper given the impending financial hit.

Half time score Wigan 7 Hull 0!!! A Wigan win means they would be 12 points above the relegation zone with a better goal difference so they may survive even if they take the 12 point deduction.

That scoreline is a little matchfixy.

My first thought was Hull was in no-man’s land (couldn’t get promoted or relegated at this point) and just punted the game. Then I see they are fighting to stay up. Very odd.
Maybe they're just really really bad, or they've quit on their manager.

Hull has been a sinking ship much of the season...certainly since December. Seeing them get waxed in a critical game isn’t a surprise to anyone right now.

This suggests it's only the goalkeeper who's throwing the game, not the rest of the team.
does xG take into account attempts to tackle or block? I think it doesn't, so for example not throwing a body in front of a shot you might otherwise will have a big effect.

Usually not. Depending on the model, it may or may not account for the position of the defenders (to the extent that data or a proxy for it is available an input).

Yeah that was what I figured, so it is probably difficult for xG to account for something like a defender in a position where strong effort gets a block in, but weak does not. Since usually players give pretty strong effort it wouldn't matter, but if the team was putting in far less effort than normal the attackers would have better chances than normal in those situations.

That would be fantastic if Wigan could stay up after the administration boondoggle.

Wigan stays up .. check
New owner loses a fortune on the failed relegation bet - check
Administration clears immediate club debts - check

Now all they need is a new - real - owner
We can hope, if we factor in the -12 points for administration, this is what the table looks like at the bottom heading into the final match:

Charlton 48 (-11)
Luton 48 (-29)
________________________
Wigan 46 (+1)
Barnsley 46 (-21)
Hull 45 (-27)

So Wigan need to win, and hope that at least one of Charlton or Luton fail to win. Here are the final fixtures:

Leeds (1st) vs Charlton
Luton vs Blackburn (10th)
Wigan vs Fulham (4th)
Brentford (3rd) vs Barnsley
Cardiff (6th) vs Hull

Leeds and Blackburn have nothing to play for. Brentford and Fulham both have a chance of finishing 2nd and getting auto-promotion. Cardiff need at least a point to guarantee a playoff spot.

Don't forget that the EFL has yet to announce any penalties for Wednesdsay (or Derby)...we've heard everything from nothing to -6 now -6 next season, -9, -12, -21. -9 puts Wednesday on 47 points. And I can't imagine anything would please Colin Warnock more than helping relegate Wednesday on the last day.

This has been the worst fucking football season.

Last game ever at Griffin Park tonight. Famous for having pubs on all four corners, Brentford have played there since 1904. One of those places that kills me to be an American...had i been in the UK I would have made the pilgrimage for sure.

Really cool two tiered away end.

My Royals are going to end up bottom half with a positive goal differential. Been a meh season but I feel like this team only needs a player or two to get into the playoff reckoning. Ovie Ejaria from Liverpool has been key this year out on the wing.

Won't they have a playoff game there if they don't finish top 2?

Ah, good point.

Anyone not paying attention to the Championship right now is nuts. It's been batshit crazy. Brentford and WBA have switched hold of the 2nd automatic spot twice, Swansea was losing but Reading is down to 10 (although I think Cardiff, who drew Hull today, will keep their Welsh rvials out of the playoffs regardless), and Barnsley and Luton are both winning and the EFL STILL hasn't finalized penalties for Wigan or Wednesday (who are winning and tied as we speak).

It's almost impossiible to follow in real time.

What a choke job by Nottingham Forest. They lost 4-1 at home to Stoke, while Swansea won 4-1, which allowed Swansea to be level on points and ahead by one in GD.

I love, love, love the Championship playoffs. Except it's really heartbreaking to see the losers sink to the turf in despair.

Forest fell apart and Swansea pumped in 4 to jump them on GD.

Leeds and West Brom up.
Brentford v Swansea and Fulham v Cardiff for the playoffs
Charlton, Wigan, and Hull go down. For now. Wigan can appeal the points deduction and there is still no officiL announcement of the ruling for Wednesday, who are 8 points above the drop.

And it’s a great field this year - all 4 teams have great storylines. Brentford trying to get to the PL for the first time in forever, Fulham obviously has tons of history, and it would also be pretty cool to see an all-Welsh playoff final.

Brentford has never played in the Premier League...I’m guessing you mean the top flight. They deserve it though, the way they’ve built this team over the last few seasons. I hope they go up.

Without coming off as an asshole, what history do you refer to with Fulham?

I didn’t mean a history of success - just that they are one of the oldest clubs in all of English football (although admittedly in a league where virtually every team has been around since the early 1900s or earlier maybe that doesn’t mean much).

For anyone who missed it, Swansea won the home leg of their semi-final 1-0 over Brentford with a nice side half-volley goal by Ayew (who had a PK stopped earlier). Brentford took control earlier, but Swansea grew into the game and I thought it was fairly even with Swansea having the best chances. A crap straight red on Brentford's LB changed the whole game, as Frank had to make some changes and Swansea really took over. Ayew popped in the winner in the 82' minute. Brentford should be okay back at home, but they've now suddenly lost 3 in a row. I bet the red card ban gets overturnecd as well, but we'll see. The EFL is a mystery.

Fulham/Cardiff today on ESPN...maybe 2:30?

Looks like the game today is on ESPN+. I can't believe it would do worse ratings than SportsCenter on ESPN2.

ESPN+ has the contract for the EFL...not sure how that's different that ESPN/ESPN2 really, but Plus is the only place theyve been shown for 2-3 years now.

Fulham 2-0 away to Cardiff...I’m thinking an all London final, but Brentford needs to get their act together.

Brentford absolutely owns Fulham, too. I talked with. Fulham fan recently on a podcast and he was petrified of the Bees...one win in the last 10, including a hiding a month ago.

They were set up to succeed. I think they probably have the most talented squad in the league. Parker tho, woof.

Probably.

I'm happy we survived. Putting another year between us and financial black hole. Hoping we can stick another year or so at this level and then maybe begin trying to climb back

How much will you be able to get for Eze? Assuming you sell unfortunately.
Wednesday did a pretty good job keying on him when we played you, but I saw him do some spectacular shit. Fun player to watch.

Saw that one. Really nice.
I, too, can't believe Brentford has faltered so after seizing control of their own destiny. Hard to know if they can get it back in time, but I'll be rooting tomorrow.
I was away much of the past 2 weeks, but am thrilled Leeds has finally clawed their way back up. Now I can watch them lose 60% of their games on national TV. Thanks DH for your magnanimity. I'll be pulling for Wednesday next year, if that's okay.
