The difference is they have plenty of history at Shinnecock, whereas they had none at EH. They know how to set this up.
At the same time, the memory of 2004 (when the overly aggressive set up caused them to lose the 7th green and almost a few others) will probably temper their efforts. Here's a good overview of what the USGA is doing for this year:

https://nypost.com/2018/06/10/unprecedented-shinnecock-hills-going-all-out-to-test-golfs-best/

It's going to be very difficult, but I won't be surprised if scores are lower than normal.

Mickelson is at the podium and said this year is the best setup of Shinnecock of the 4 US Opens he's played in here. Says the balls out of the fairway won't automatically end up in the deep rough so touch is a huge factor.

Apparently DJ just played Shinnecock for the first time yesterday. Normally that would be something that scares me off picking a player, but that seems about right for DJ. I’m not sure DJ and DeChambeau will be a pairing come September though.

I listened to a few Open related podcasts this week. Seems like the setup is good. Everyone is nervous about 7, but the USGA insists it’ll be fine. Fairways are wide, averaging 41 yards, up from 26 yards in 04. It isn’t totally a bombers paradise with wide fairways though, there’s risk/reward depending upon the line/angle a player takes and Davis says the fairway bunkers are more in play than in previous Open’s there. They also closely mowed the green sides on almost every hole so there will be more run off if you miss or can’t hold a green.

Can’t wait for Thursday. I’m a fan of carnage at the US Open, but not forced carnage from dumb set ups. Seems like this week will be a heck of a test.

I’m on 7 right now. I’d say over half the shots have been short with the wind picking up this afternoon. It’s so hard for a ball to hold on the green. Rahm just got a ball that landed 2 feet from the pin and nearly rolled off. It’s supposed to rain a bit tomorrow so maybe that will help.

If anybody is heading out to Shinnecock this week, I strongly encourage you to take the LIRR. The traffic situation is a complete disaster. Taking Sunrise Highway is inviting yourself to sit in a parking lot to get to Gabreski Airport. The shuttles take longer than expected to get to the course because of the traffic. The LIRR added a special train stop right across from the entrance to the course. I got the train at around 8 am yesterday and was on the course by 9:15-9:30.

To expand on this point, the USGA sent all volunteers(which I am one) an email with the average travel time between Gabreski Airport and Shinnecock for Thursday and Friday based on what it took the first 3 days. Mind you, it's a 12 mile drive to the course.

Leaving before 5:30--30 minutes
6-6:30 AM--45 minutes to 1 hour
6:30 AM-8:00 AM--1 hour and 45 minutes

Thanks for this. Keep us posted. I wonder if it gets better or worse as the weekend rolls on.

If you like carnage, tune in. Phil, Spieth, Rory a combined +11 through 4 holes.

Edit: Just had an army searching for Rory’s ball in the rough. Spieth in there too.

Matt Parziale from Brockton has somehow played the first 10 holes of his day at even par. Pretty impressive.

And I jinxed him as he bogeys 11 immediately.

What are they saying for later in the day?

73 of 78 players are over par as of this moment. Typical Shinny. What are the odds that Scott Piercy's -1 will be the leading score for the day?
Very high. 95% or better. I don't expect to see much more than 12-14 players +1 or better after the day is up.

I can't wait to watch the next featured group at 1:47.

That is an absolute bitch of a hole. Nobody I saw on 2 on Tuesday hit anything that would be considered a birdie opportunity.

As of right now, here are some other hole scoring averages
#3 500 yd par 4--4.68(38 of 70 players bogey or worse)
#14 500 yd par 4--4.60(27 of 60 players bogey or worse)

I might as well just go home because no work is getting done after 1:47.
I haven't got anything done today anyways, so the afternoon will be more of the same.

I will get in only 8-9 holes today as I am out at 4:30ish. But Friday off from work and no plans for the weekend will give me plenty of viewing.
