True, but for the match to continue past 16. Phil would have needed to make the next shot AND have Molinari 3 putt from 20 feet. Maybe Phil should have tried to make the shot first
No I get it but at least take the drop and put it on the green then concede from up there. I’ve just never seen it before on the point that wins the Ryder Cup.

Just a piss poor performance. The only bright spots were JT, Finau, Webb, Brooks. Can’t win with 6+ players being lousy.
Tiger and Phil were useless. Reed was terrible. Bubba got a point but he's awful. DeChambeau did nothing. Spieth was pretty good, but really murdered the US today. Absolutely killed the team by getting steamrolled. Fowler and DJ were HORRENDOUS. You're right, you cannot do anything when 67% of the team are lousy.

I'm with you. It's an awesome group of guys and it's fun to see them win on their home soil.

Also, sorry, but I love Poulter.
I'm with you guys, I said it back before it started. I like the European players more. I love Poulter. I

uS has Finau. I still kind of like Phil, but there are a handful of people I don't like and root against

On the side TV, Im watching Douchchambeau make Noren putt a 18 incher.
Yeah was going to post on that. He is an odd mix. He is singing with the crowd, taking down the be quiet signs, but then pulls that dic k move

At least I was able to get in a nap after waking up early to watch and then realize the US was getting smoked sending me back to bed....on to the next wrap-around season

He took those down because they had taken out the tee markers and they needed something to hit from.

Also, I don’t blame Bryson for trying to win. Career Ryder Cup record matters and he doesn’t want to get shutout this year.

In seriousness, I think Stricker is next up for the captaincy and then Phil in 2022, unless they hold him back for 2024 on home soil.

You've got to figure Tiger will slide in there somewhere around that time as well

Jesus Bryson almost holed out from the fairway on 18. Great shot.

I actually feel really bad for Bryson. You could tell he didn’t want to go pointless.

At this point, the PGA of America should probably take a page from the international soccer playbook and hire a Euro Captain.

There's no way they wait 6 years for Phil. If Phil wants it next, he'll get it.
Unless they tell him he can be player-captain, it seems very unlikely he’d make that decision in the next three months. The guy still thinks he’s going to win the US Open next year.

He might be changing his mind with how he played.
I don’t think he’ll throw in the towel that quick. They have to name the captain in the next few months.

I don’t know, Stricker seems like they guy they already lined up. Captained the last PC, been VC at the Ryder Cup twice, and as mentioned it’s a home game for him in Wisconsin.

Here’s the driving accuracy numbers on the PGA tour this year. Regardless of what club they hit. Not many surprises based on the results from this week, but I was surprised to see Justin Thomas and Finau so low based on how they played this week.

75% Stensen
65% Poulter
65% Rose
64% Fowler
64% Fleetwood
63% Casey
62% DeChambeau
62% Simpson
62% Sergio
61% Speith
61% Hatton
61% Noren
60% Rahm
59% Tiger
58% DJ
58% Thomas
58% Bubba
56% Koepka
55% Rory
55% Finau
54% Reed
52% Phil

For reference 65% occupied slots 37-43 on the list
Phil at 52% is 193. Couldn’t find Olesen on the list.

I think he is realizing now he may not get picked again.

That said, I have no doubt he will push as hard as he can to try and make the team again, but he probably needs to be top 12 in the points to have a chance.

Spieth getting smoked really killed the entire US team. Things were going ok and then he was down 5 and everything deflated. He was a huge favorite. The other big favorite, Molinari, got the job done. Spieth did not.

Spieth is now 0-6-0 combined in Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup singles.

His whole “we” schtick with his caddie kind of makes sense in context. It seems he doesn’t feel confident on his own. Great in teams; liability in singles.

Feel like if we ever want to win one of these overseas again, we either need to push for the big guys to add Euro Tour events to their schedule and/or give preference to Americans who play more over there when it comes to captain's picks. Guys who have more experience with the way they set up courses. Then again, Reed is second in the Race to Dubai, so what the hell do I know.

Whistling Straits is going to be setup to be an absolute birdie-fest. Which is fine, the home team gets to decide how the course is set up and why should they not set it up to benefit themselves. I just don't want to hear Justin Rose bitching that it's a pro-am quality set up like he did at Hazeltine.

Also, leave Bubba in Paris.

Part of the problem is that either part of the Euro team has seen these courses before, but they are new to the Americans. Whereas when it's a home game, the Euros are just as familiar with the course as the Americans.

They need to find a way to play the courses before competition.

Yes, they do need to. Problem is how? They don’t know the team - even outside of the captains picks - until just before it, or Id say maybe provide an exemption to the new 25 tournament rule, but that’s not something they can actually do. Perhaps the extra time between end of Fedex and start of this provides a window? Send them for an extra week of practice rounds? Certainly wouldn’t hurt the camaraderie aspect. Identify a group of, say, 32 or so leading candidates and send them over during shoulder season? I don’t follow the European Tour but I imagine most of these courses are played yearly, so maybe you make it a condition of eligibility for the team, you have to go play that tournament (barring injury or conflict with a Major or sponsor tournament here)?

I know I’m throwing shot against a wall here, but I e been having the same thought since yesterday, that the Euros play our courses but we don’t play theirs. That even leads to a bit of an advantage on the travel aspect (jet lag, etc).

Sure, but There was a whole bunch of the team who flew over to Paris a couple weeks after the Paris Open to play some practice rounds.

And of course the one Euro who noticeably skipped the Paris event this year, as he was at the same time winning his first PGA tour event that week, was Francisco Molinari.

I wasn't aware a group went over. That's even worse. So that shit didn't stick to the wall?? Lol.

Well in 2022 it will be held at the Marco Simone Course near Rome. The course is being renovated but it looks like starting in 2020 it is going to hold the Italian Open, just like this course now holds the French Open.
You can assume the course will be set up similar to this course with narrow fairways and crazy rough.
It would be nice if some of the top US guys could play in that event at some point.

6 of the 12 guys on the US team had seen this course before the event. Of course you can know every corner of the course but if you play like shit it really doesn't matter.

I do wonder how much an advantage was gained by playing the French Open. Overall, I'm sure having familiarity with the course is a positive. But how similar were the conditions and setup in July to this weekend? Shackelford said the course was much more lush for the Cup than it was for the Open. I'd be interested to hear what JT had to say about it. Also, it wasn't like Noren, who won the French Open, had an incredible cup. I mean he was fine, but also lost to a team containing Bubba.

Byrdbrain is right, next time we're in Europe it'll be the same setup, narrow fairways and penal rough. I'm starting to wonder if a team that's built to win in the US can't win in Europe, and vice versa. So do there need to be different approaches for building the teams every other cup? Maybe increase the number of captain's picks and make clear from the outset that they're putting a premium on guys who can find the fairway?

Speaking of captains, not sure how I feel about Furyk. He wasn't great, obviously. But half his team flat out sucked this week. And I don't think we can ding him on the captain's picks. Tiger, Bryson, and Finau earned their spots. Phil's deep in the process of how these teams work, so even if Furyk wanted to leave him off, that may not have been a realistic option. Basically, the guys who were obvious, no-doubt picks prior to the cup were incredible 0-fers, while Finau, the last pick, was one of the best players this week.

I think the teams are so close talent wise that having a captain who sets up they course to the strengths of his team is the biggest advantage you can have.

Agreed on Furyk. Not great, not bad. Phil was the only bad pick and if he doesn’t pick him then tonight we are asking if he could have helped.

It also means more to the Europeans. I do not mean that as a slight but when an interviewer asks Molinari what win was bigger and he says without question the Ryder cup was bigger than his Open win it puts it in perspective. Could you imagine anyone on the US saying that the Ryder cup was bigger than their first major win?
