That was unbelievable. Had about 10 people watching at a kids birthday party and it got dusty at the end all around. What an insane scene coming up 18 too, I’ve never seen anything like that.

That was about as much fun and as amazing a scene as I’ve seen. The comeback to win again, the stage, the added excitement of Rose being one stroke away from giving him the whole damn thing; the scene at 18 was amazing and something I think I would have to choose if you gave me the option of being there for that or going to the Masters it’s be tough. That just seemed so...electric. The whole crowd chanting, him holding back tears, Horschel, Fowler, Rory, Rose giving him love after. Wow. I still need to digest that whole day. Just friggin amazing.

Yes. In his press conference, he was asked 2 questions that I think he kind of answered only in the professional sense. One was about what the “low point” was and the other was about how his dad would feel about this win.
Again, he kept his answers golf-centric but I’m sure, in an “honest” moment, he’d acknowledge the lowest of the low on the personal side and that his dad would likely be more proud for him coming back from where he was to this point. For me, this was the most improbable and unbelievable. This specific accomplishment won’t (can’t) happen again

Tiger wins $1.6 million for the tourney, and another $3 million for second place in the FedEx Cup for over $8.4 million earned on the course this year.

Amusingly, with DJ beating Rose by a stroke, they switched places in the world rankings again, DJ back to #1.

Tiger is one of the few golfers on the Tour for whom the money is meaningless. It makes his comeback, and his play, pure in a way that amateur sports once were (or were supposed to be). He went through several back surgeries and regained his touch for the glory and the game. Good for him!

It's not quite meaningless. It might not be as meaningful as a guy grinding out a career, but 9 million dollars is 9 million dollars. If it was meaningless, Tiger would rip up the checks.

Where do you get that number? I thought it was $4.62M. For a guy with a net worth that is estimated to be about $750MM, I doubt that he's doing it for the money.

8.4 million dollars earned on the course this year.

I'm not saying he's doing it for the money. But 8.4 million dollars isn't meaningless.

You are right about that. I was focused on the latest event, not the season, and 8.4 means something even to Tiger.

I agree with you Koufax. The same thought occurred to me last night as I rewatched the 18th and his pressers/interviews. For the first time, maybe ever, I thought we saw the genuine and raw Tiger and you could tell he was genuinely happy to be back and playing for the spirit of the game.

The money is absolutely meaningless to him.

Appearance fees or endorsement deals of a million here or there have little meaning, but career earnings are just another way to keep score. And you can bet he’s keeping score.

Something about him was different. It's hard to put into words but it just was.

Like, he's said before he always gets nervous on the first tee...but yesterday was the first time I think I saw him actually be nervous. His breathing was heavier on the first tee, he looked to be calming his nerves a bit.

On 18, when he raises his hands...he was trying not to cry. It was a different smile than the "Yes I just won, now worship me" smile that he's had his whole career. It was more appreciative, soaking in the moment.

I watched on delay. I played in the afternoon, avoided everything, then just fast forward to every swing he made. Took me about an hour to watch it. My son was on my lap, my wife sitting on the couch next to me. It got emotional.

With only 22 events played. Minimum points divisor is 40. His average points per event is higher than DJ and Rose by a fraction when using actual events played rather than the minimum divisor. He's very very back.
This is true but kind of ignores the fact that about half of DJ's and Rose's points are heavily discounted because they're farther in the past. If you just count events played since he came back, they're both significantly higher in average points (~16 to Tiger's ~10).

DeChambeau to putt with the pin in at all times next year, except for the US Open (apparently they use different flagsticks).

https://www.golf.com/tour-and-news/2018/11/01/bryson-dechambeau-putting-pin-2019-rules/

Wonder how many pro players follow suit. The quick blurb in the bottom of the article indicates that the math says everyone should do it unless the pin is leaning so far forward that the ball won’t fit in the hole.

I was going to cite Pelz and then clicked the link and saw it was exactly the excerpt from The Short Game Bible that I was thinking of. I doubt many do it, most don’t even leave in when they chip; Mickelson being cited there is notable as he was one of Pelz’s biggest pupils. It was one of the odder rule changes, I’m not even sure why they did it to be honest.

They did it to speed up play around the green for the average player.

It should have the desired effect.

I misspoke. I know ‘why’ they did it, to your point. I don’t see it having the desired effect that you do. Now there’s going to be back and forth in groups on who wants it in or out. Most of the dozen or so guys I play with can’t even agree on chipping with it in they aren’t suddenly going to all go with leaving it in to putt. Ymmv.

Tiger and Phil’s little $9 million hit and giggle is coming up next week. The PPV price is $19.99. They announced the broadcast team today, Ernie Johnson is in the lead chair, Peter Jacobsen and Darren Clarke are the analysts. Shane Bacon and Natalie Gulbis are handling the on-course duties. There will be a ton of downtime so I understand the need to bring a bunch of people on board to make sure the dead air is covered but this feels like a bit of overkill, especially with the players and caddies mic’d up. A bit more curious is a 1-hour pre-match show that will feature Pat Perez, Charles Barkley and Samuel L. Jackson. That should be...interesting?

They did an HBO 24/7 episode on it on Tuesday, which was a bit underwhelming in my opinion. It was basically a rehash of their careers mixed in with Tiger scooting around Medalist and Phil strategizing at Shadow Creek. I thought there was an opportunity to do more with it. People tuning in are going to be familiar with the career arcs of the two players, I didn’t think there was any uniqueness to the show.

Anyways, they’ll get my money, but for me it is losing a bit of luster from me as it gets closer.
