Too early to know if they were designated to return or out for the year? Or has that been announced and I missed it?

They don't have to announce it now. They are both eligible to return, but only two players can, and we don't know if their injuries will allow for a return at this time.

Offense is going to have to somehow generate many points and a big TOP advantage vs. opponents.

Quick IR Tracker, as the question has come up a couple of times:

Ineligible to return:
- Isaiah Wynn
- Braxton Berrios
- Christian Sam
- Ulrick John
- Ryan Izzo

Eligible to return:
- Duke Dawson (Week 9)
- Jeremy Hill (Week 10, but he's done w/ torn ACL)
- Rex Burkhead (Week 12, but seems highly unlikely)
- Ja'Whaun Bentley (Week 12, but if it's truly a torn pec, that also seems unlikely)

Pats had noone land on reserve/PUP this season.

Does this actually help start a needed reset? Let's face it. We are gonna need a QB soon. We need athletic linebackers. RB is dicey. Personally, I think being mediocre is never the way to go...better off sucking for a few years while reloading for a multi year run..(of course they will beat Miami 28-3, go 12-4, and I will look like an idiot, again)

First, Belichick the coach is not going to suddenly tell the guys the season is over, and we're playing for the future. The first coach in the NFL that does that after 3 games will have his career over after said 3 games. I don't think you were suggesting this, btw. The coach will play to win every game, and will push as hard as he can until the team is officially eliminated from playoff contention.

If Belichick the GM thinks things are hopeless, he could make some moves this season with an eye towards the future in terms of stockpiling more draft picks. Or he could not make some moves that would involve bringing in a rental player. But I think we're still a ways from that even.

Were the past two games an aberration? The problem always is. We've been here before. We have questioned the state of the team only to have them go on a roll. It sure does feel and smell differently this time. We will know soon enough.

They will never not compete on the field. But if they are anything less than 4 and 4 by the last week of Oct, which happens to coincide with the trading deadline, I can envision them selling to trim cap and collect assets.

In this doomsday scenario, who exactly do we have that would be of interest to other teams?

Mid-season "fire sales" are unheard of in the NFL. For years, even trades were almost unheard of, with the trade deadline basically an open joke. Vets like Gronk, Gilmore and McCourty are well paid, and therefore difficult to squeeze in for most contending teams. Trading young players on cheap contracts is not the typical way for a rebuild.

So that leaves guys in their walk years: Malcom Brown, Trey Flowers, Geneo Grissom. Not sure what value Brown would bring at this point. Flowers would probably draw some interest, but again you're probably looking at 5th or 6th round pick, and he may be someone worth rebuilding around.

Precisely. There isn't going to be any kind of purge even if we do stink. I'm hopeful that they can get a guy like Flowers extended soon.

They reportedly worked out Breshad Perriman today.

I think BB and Casserio are Spinal Tap and the 2018 WR position is their drummer.

Did any info on Bentley's injury ever come out? I've looked in the google but can't find anything specific about the injury.
The way he fell would lead one to believe it's a shoulder issue or maybe a torn pec. I'm curious if I should be getting my hopes up about him returning later in the year or not.

I read yesterday (can't remember where) that he was seen with his arm in a sling...but that was all I can remember reading.
Not super informative.

Mike Reiss said his right arm was in a cast and a sling. That leads me to believe he broke his arm.

Reiss said that Bentley was done for the year and that the only two players on IR who have a chance to return are Burkhead and Dawson:

The Patriots have the option to bring two players back from IR later this season, depending on the recovery for each player, and I'm told that Dawson and Burkhead are the only players who could fall into that category as of now (the timeline for recovery for Bentley and Hill, for example, puts them into the 2019 league year).

Thank you. This may be as good info as we get until some point in the offseason. The cast does make it seem like a broken arm but depending on the type of break a return this season might have been feasible. I'm still going to guess that there is a soft tissue injury as well. Your arm would be in a sling after or before surgery for a torn pec.

Regardless one would hope that an arm, pec, shoulder injury is not a long-term issue for him and that he returns in 2019 as a full go for training camp. We've seen too many young players get hurt early and then just kind of fade away due to missing time. I'm hopeful that Bentley won't fall into that category because he got in a full training camp and almost a 1/4 of a season before getting hurt.

There's nothing I hate doing more than bumping this thread. Hoping against hope that Michel isn't lost for the season, if not more.

"Cannot make a clear conclusion off limited video on #SonyMichel. Not ACL. Not expecting a season ending injury. Worry for meniscus tear on his already degenerative left knee."

It’s right there in black and white, people.

Michel was initially announced as "Questionable" to return, right? My understanding is that they know ACL or Achilles tears right away, so that would suggest it wasn't one of those.

we should take bets on which reporter (Local or national) breaks the Michel injury news....
