I don’t understand why the NFL doesn’t do something to remove the ambiguity of roster cut down day. Something simple like requiring teams to put out a press release with the final roster by 430 pm or updating the teams websites. It always seems like there is some fogginess on what’s the final roster when there really doesn’t need to be any. I know they don’t want guys finding out they’ve been cut on Twitter or in the media but that seems easy enough to solve just start making the cuts earlier in the day or delay the official announcement until after the 4pm deadline.

The NFL is about the NFL when it comes to controlling the flow of information. Making cuts early in the will get the news out almost immediately in today's world ... an "official announcement" would be a wasted exercise.

This way, NFL fans track the moves all day long ... giving the league another "event day" to follow

Forget WR's, how many healthy RB's do they have? Is Burkhead still alive? Jeremy Hill's injury looked kind of ugly in the third preseason game. Sony Michel still isn't practicing. Who am I missing other than James White? Bolden, Webb and Gillislee all cut.

God, I miss Dion Lewis.

Sony Michel is back at practice but yes he's an issue all year. Rex Burkhead is ready to go. Jeremy Hill's injury turned out to be nothing much. My guess is that Farrow could make the initial roster as insurance but I don't think RB is nearly the issue that WR is.

I have us at 58.

My bubble guys are:

Crossen - reportedly safe
Croston - likely safe with Tobin gone
Farrow
Ferentz
T.Harris
Hill - should be safe
King - should be safe as core ST
Poggi
Roberts
Sam - 6th rounder likely makes it
Schwenke

Of the others, keep either Roberts or one of the OL?

Am I missing anyone?

Edit: good point on Farrow. Bet he sticks for now.

Second edit: and obviously all will change tomorrow.

From @dougkyed:

“At least two of these players will make the Patriots' initial 53-man roster: RB Kenneth Farrow, FB Henry Poggi, OL Cole Croston, OL James Ferentz, OL Brian Schwenke, DE Trent Harris, LB Christian Sam.”

That makes me feel better. I didn't realize Burkhead and Hill were both healthy. I just have trouble getting worked up about wide receiver. They'll figure out a way to make it work Hogan and Dorsett, Gronk, and probably put Burkhead in the slot, and White coming out of the backfield. An injury or two could certainly become an issue, but those 5 guys can get us to week 5 when Edelman gets back. It's not like it's the first time Belichick, the GM, has basically given Tom a pile of shit on the outside.

Edit: For those who may be interested, I need to sell two tickets to game 1 against Houston, 30 yard line, 20 rows from the field. They are in the ticket swap forum, face value.

Official cuts are out. Here's who got cut.

The Patriots released 26 players: DL John Atkins, P Corey Bojorquez, RB Brandon Bolden, OL Luke Bowanko, OL Cole Croston, QB Danny Etling, RB Kenneth Farrow, OL James Ferentz, LB Marquis Flowers, RB Mike Gillislee, DL Trent Harris, CB Cyrus Jones, OL Jason King, LB Harvey Langi, DL Eric Lee, WR K.J. Maye, WR Riley McCarron, DB A.J. Moore, FB Henry Poggi, OL Brian Schwenke, OL Matt Tobin, DB Damarius Travis, TE Will Tye, DL Vincent Valentine, RB Ralph Webb and CB Jomal Wiltz.

Christian Sam, Braxton Berrios, Ulrich John, and Isaiah Wynn were placed on IR.

Ryan Izzo was NOT placed on IR yet so he's on the 53 which leads me to believe he'll be back this season and they want him on the team.

So, revisiting:

Crossen - reportedly safe - made team
Croston - likely safe with Tobin gone - nope, gone too
Farrow - gone (guess not as worried about RB as we were)
Ferentz - gone, as expected
T.Harris - gone, as expected
Hill - should be safe - made team
King - should be safe as core ST - safe
Poggi - gone, as expected
Roberts - made team
Sam - 6th rounder likely makes it - nope, IR (and Izzo not on IR)
Schwenke - gone, as expected

I think it's connected to the IR-DTR thing. IIRC, if you start the season on IR, you can't return - so if they might want someone back, he makes the initial roster and then goes on IR; someone else gets cut and then returns

he is also a vested veteran so he's not subject to waivers, meaning there is no risk he is forced to go somewhere else. He can sign somewhere else, but I think the Patriots are willing to risk that.
and his yearly salary is only guaranteed if he is on the team week one, so if they bring him back later they only need to pay him for the weeks he is on the team.

But since they only kept 52 why even take the small risk?
There is also obviously a handshake deal with Bolden. He doesn’t make large dollars so sure there is a risk that someone offers him more than what the Pats want to pay him but they one may feel comfortable matching a higher offer up to a certain point and two consider him a valuable part of the roster but not to the point where losing him to an offer they won’t match would be a big issue. Bolden also by all reports loves it here, has a great deal of gratitude for the pats giving him a chance to make an nfl career and has put down some family roots. So sure there is a risk but they see it as an acceptable one

Phil Perry's write up on Chad Hansen
Chad Hansen, Cal, 6-foot-2, 202 pounds: In terms of his experience running a variety of routes, Hansen is more like an Antithetical Patriot. He aligned almost exclusively out wide and on the right side of Cal's formations, and according to Pro Football Focus 73.6 percent of his targets came on screens (where he was surprisingly elusive after the catch in one-on-one situations), hitches and go routes. Though his numbers at the combine were relatively pedestrian, he's quick for his size (6.74-second three-cone drill, 4.13-second short shuttle) and he plays faster than the numbers would indicate. Plus, he's one of the most coordinated outside receivers in the class. He's excellent at using his frame to high-point passes along the sidelines, and he has good awareness to get his feet down in-bounds. With plenty of room to grow after just one season as a starter with the Bears (he transferred from Idaho State after spending the 2013 season there), Hansen is the kind of work-in-progress prospect who could blossom with a year of seasoning in New England.

Surprised they got Valentine back. I figured he could make an active roster somewhere.

Pretty much love this group. Etling has intriging potential, Valentine is a quality DT when healthy, Langi's athleticism is what we need at LB, and the other guys have some ability. Plus the two receivers
