You are greatly underestimating the difference between pros and college.
Someone has seen Miracle a few too many times, methinks.

I was commentating on the OAR/Russia vs. Slovakia game, and I was astonished how Slovakia restricted Russia to only 19 shots on goal. Russia started what I thought was their worst goalie of the three available to them, and you could argue that all three goals he gave up could have been stopped - the first goal in particular almost certainly should have been stopped. But it was the lack of offense that really puzzled me: Russia was up 2-0 just over four minutes into the game, and I thought the floodgates were about to open, but they didn't score again. Maybe the lesson is that nobody knows anything about what the men's hockey tournament is going to look like.

[EDIT: Russia had 22 shots on goal; Slovakia had 19. But still. And whatever.]

I came away from both games thinking literally anyone could win the gold... except the unified Korea team.

Still, the US played two good periods then folded in on themselves in the third and OT. If they can replicate those two good periods they could be ok. Brutal finish, but if they can win tomorrow, they have a chance of upsetting the Russians.

Also should be a great experience for the NCAA kids. Even if they lose all three games those guys should get a good benefit from the play.

Anyone have URL links to future Olympic hockey game streams online where you don't get spoiled? Especially un-airing on TV games (OAR, Sweden etc.)

NBC site kind of sucks in this manner.

Just getting to watch the game now.

First observation: JFC, the blue boards are BRUTAL. I can’t imagine having to watch a puck against that mess.

It's time for that war between the 2 best women's teams in the world that will have virtually no effect on who wins the gold medal.

Canada gets away with offside and scores a second.

Now a penalty shot for the US...and it's missed.

Well the Canadian men have gotten off to a good start defeating the Swiss 5-1. Captain and oldest player on the roster Chris Kelly was very strong defensively while Rene Bourque and Wojtek Wolski each had two goals. Derek Roy had 3 assists.

Here is a photo of Canada's Wojtek Wolski, slightly over a year ago, in hospital recovering from a broken neck. I find it truly amazing that he is playing in the Olympics now.

He's had a pretty good season in the KHL, too - arguably the best Polish ice hockey player ever. (Unless you want to credit Gretzky as Polish, of course.)

My favorite broken neck sports story is still Manchester City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann breaking his neck with 15 minutes left in the 1956 FA Cup Final, *staying in the game*, and helping his team win the trophy.

Men’s team is 1-1 midway through the first against Slovakia. Donato PPG for USA, Slovaks answered 25 seconds later.

Putin must love how this worked out. Couldn't wear the Russia unis, so they wear copies of the old Soviet Union ones. All that's missing is the CCCP.

Watching this game has showed me what a 30 minute power play would look like. It's 5-0 Russia, and it's actually more one sided than that score makes it look.

The USA is now 1-0 in Olympic men's hockey games I've commentated on. The end. :)
US looked a lot more consistent, and kept attacking late in the game. Hopefully these close games will help them in the quarterfinals/elimination round moving forward. Zapolski was really shaky last night, and they will need him to be much more consistent to beat Russia, and to advance in the medal round.

It's also readily apparent their best line is The Donato and Terry line. Both were their most effective offense players all night, but they will have their hands full having to defend the Russians and all their talent. Greenway is a physical beast and was impressive as well. I find it interesting the NCAA guys have been their most effective.

Going to be an interesting test tomorrow morning with the Russians. I am planning on waking up early with my alarm (I.e. My 10 month who will wake me up anyways).

Still wide open. This could be a lot of fun for the USA as I think they have a real shot at winning.
