Jags release Chris Ivory.

Some tire-kicking for a powerback Blount role may be interesting. I always liked his head down running style.

Yeah I just wrote the same in the 2018 roster thread. Nice backup insurance if (when) Burkhead and/or Lewis leave

Ivory has played 16 games only once in an 8 year career. I’ve always liked his physical approach as well but either he is brittle or that style is too impactful for anyone’s body. Either or it doesn’t matter. There would be no reason to expect him to go through a season without injury.

I don’t think the Pats approach of having a stable of running backs will offer him protection. As a younger player he has pretty much always been a part time back and he still managed to miss games. Now he has 8 years of NFL grind on his body.

I like the player and wouldn’t object to a signing for the right price but I think they’d be nuts to bring him in without also bringing in a second option. Which seems like a poor use of roster spots

Yeah. I take him as a vet minimum and that’s it. 30 year-old RB with no versatility doesn’t seem like a great fit.

Rumors of a Marcus Peters to the Rams trade are out there.
This deal likely makes the Chiefs worse in 2018, but better in 2019 (cap room, plus likely contributions from one or two 2018 draftees in their second year). Obviously can’t judge without knowing which picks they’re getting, but on the surface it seems like a sensible move by a team that’s planning to start a first-time QB next season, even apart from Peters’ reported conflicts with the coaching staff.

Not only is he a bargain for $1.7 in 2018, there is a fifth year option for 2019.. I don’t believe the Chiefs believe they are taking a step back next season.

At a certain point, Andy Reid is not going to put up with the bullshit, and bear in mind the basic conservatism in Kansas City. (Anthem kneeling)

Rams get better.

If I’m Peters, I’m holding out the minute I get to LA. He should be able to get at least a few million more this season, if nothing else.

Doesn’t moving from Smith to Mahomes basically make it certain they are likely taking a step back this year?

Time will tell. Did the Cowboys take a step back when they moved on from Romo? The Seahawks when Wilson won the job his rookie year in camp? Then there is Wentz.

We’re not seeing practice, and the Chiefs are reportedly thrilled with what they seeing from Mahomes.

Now is not the time to take a deliberate step back in you are in the AFC West.

Fair point, they see him more than we do, but those are pretty poor comps.

Prescott had proven himself by the time Romo was ready to come back. Wilson competed with Matt Flynn, who while they had given him a big contract, had very little track record and the Seahawks were coming off a 7-9 season. Wentz? So they were going to stick with Bradford, a roll of duct tape and some super glue?

I get your point (and agree with it to an extent), that we never know and obviously KC and Reid feel comfortable making the switch, but I think it's pretty probable they take at least a small step back going with Mahomes over a - while milquetoast - proven playoff QB on the last year of his deal. Exactly to your point, the West is tough. I'd be highly surprised if they go 10-6 again. But I fully adit that could be biased, I thought they drafted him too high to begin with.

Mahomes is the best QB prospect in the history of the franchise. That's an incredibly low bar, but if he stays healthy he will be a good QB who already has more upside than Alex Smith. He's had a year to learn the system and adapt to the NFL, so I doubt they expect to take a step back from 10-6.

With Peters, either Clark Hunt or Reid decided they wanted Peters gone for whatever they could get for him. That kind of decision leads to not getting enough in return.

True enough.

Has the return in draft choices been reported?

I don't disagree with any of this, I'm just skeptical of the results. Oakland will be better with Gruden, SD should maintain and Elway is going to get a QB. Then they get to play the NFC West - with Seattle and LA on the road; and non visional road goes include the Pats and the Steelers.

They got a nice return on the trade but I would have stuck with Smith for one more year. Again, I admit I haven't seen him everyday in practice, it just seems premature to throw him in there.

Vikings are not going to franchise Case Keenum.

Peter King ... idiot:

• Three of the teams most desperate for a long-term starter—the Browns, Jets and Vikings—have an average of $77 million in cap room entering free-agency. If the Jets want Cousins, which is a given, do you think they’d actually draw the line somewhere, anywhere, shy of getting their man?

One asterisk: Cousins may decide he wants to go only to a team ready to win now. Say he decides his best option is Denver. (The Broncos, according to overthecap.com, have $26.8 million in cap room.) I doubt Cousins will say he has to make as much in Denver as the highest bidder, if he has his mind set on the Broncos. To me, that type of scenario is the only way he doesn’t end up at $30 million annually, or north of that.
Summation: King doesn't think the Vikings would be ready to win now

You quoted a post about Rapoport but are saying King. Is there King info somewhere I'm not seeing?

Dolphins and agent for Miami’s franchised player Jarvis Landry scheduled to meet Wednesday in Indianapolis to discuss the WR’s future, per sources. Multiple sources believe the Dolphins are interested in trading Landry.

The Chiefs believe Mahomes is ready. So they aren't about to pay Smith big money and also burn a second year of Mahomes' rookie deal to keep a QB on the bench who they feel is ready to play and play well. Instead they moved Smith, opened up much-needed cap room, added a much-needed CB, and are going with the guy who they believe in, who already in practice, exhibition games and the glorified exhibition game of week 17 has made throws that Alex Smith can't make.

And then they turned around and traded away Peters (who was still on his rookie contract) for a horrible return. So there's always the possibility that they don't know what they're doing.

Peters was a major pain in the ass from a behavior standpoint. You can have a reasonable debate about how long the leash should be, but that he is high maintenance is undeniable and, in fact, reflected in the return on the trade. If there were no serious issues, the Chiefs could have played teams against each other and obtained “true” market value on the trade. They know what they are doing but simply chose not to put up with the bullshit anymore.

Another Vikes QB set to hit FA.

Maybe they are clearing room for Cousins, which would be fine by me.
This makes all the sense in the world to me. I'm not a fan of Cousins at his (projected) salary, but joining a team that already has a championship-caliber defense and just needs something from QB? That works. He'd be an upgrade on Bradford / Keenum / Bridgewater.

According to Tony Pauline, Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas may be put on the trade block this week at the Combine. I'd be all over Thomas if he's available if the choice was one or the other. D-Mac and Earl Thomas? Sign me up.

  • I’m told there’s a good chance the Seattle Seahawks dangle either Richard Sherman or Earl Thomas in trade talks this week. Thomas is more marketable, as he’s in the final year of his contract and is due $10.4 million in 2018 -- $2.8 million less than Sherman, who watched his season end with a torn Achilles last November and will turn 30 in March.

Mo officially released
The good Mo would solve a lot of our defensive problems in one fell swoop. He's probably worth looking into although the decline in production after the big contract and and being late for practices are not BB-friendly actions

Right. It will depend what he is looking for. He has made over $50M so far. If he is looking to make bank he will sign elsewhere. If there isn't a market for him then I could see a one year, make good, incentive laden deal to prove he can still be a force, then him leaving to sign a big deal in a year.
