Not surprised they kept him, surprised they didn’t let him go to market aside from preserving goodwill. Who could have even offersheeted him? Unlikely the Sixers blow their wad on him, the Lakers used their space already, the Hawks are tanking; I guess the Bulls could have taken a shot.
And the Bulls just drafted Markannen and Wendell Carter Jr. in the lottery back to back years that play his position.

Good point. So they were really bidding against themselves. I guess the flipside is that they're going to be bad and have a shitty cap situation for years anyways, why quibble over a couple million and risk pissing off Gordon.

Hezonja to Knicks for one-year, $6.5M deal.

The draft is such a crap shoot. You can pick at #5 and some years get Hezonja or Dunn or Dante Exum or Alex Len or Thomas Robinson. Or you might get Kevin Garnett or Kevin Love or Dwayne Wade or Vince Carter or Ray Allen.

We should mandate that this be the first post of every draft thread.

Per Woj, Redick returning to Philly on 1 year / $12-13M deal. Philly clearly going to roll their cap space to next year now that their top FA targets are gone. Makes sense.

That’s a big drop from his salary on last years one year deal. Guess they don’t need to buy him to Philly anymore

That was just such an awful pick to begin with. They wanted a wing and passed over four very high upside ones for a guy that profiled, in a best case scenario, as weakside shooter with some playmaking ability. Hezonja probably would have been decent in the 90s, though.

In the Uncle Drew movie, Aaron Gordon's character is advised not to pass it to a teammate named "Mario" because apparently Mario is awful.

It does come with a no-trade as a one year deal for someone who would earn Early Bird rights at the end, and if I’m doing the math right Philly should be able to get max space next year without renouncing his Early Bird. Simmons/Redick/Covington/Embiid/max FA is a nice counter to the Celtics and maybe the East favorite if Kyrie bolts and/or Horford declines.

Noel apparently signed for vet minimum. That's a bargain right there---I realize there's questions around a lot of stuff with him, but still

I was expecting him to be in the euroleague this year so actually not terribly surprising. The game has changed so much and Noel really makes you 4 on 5

With these latest puts (signing Rondo) and takes (renouncing Randle), what is the Lakers' current situation in regards to their ability to sign Cousins or trade for Kawhi?

Zero. The first tell was signing Wagner which was Magic moving on. This is why they are going the 1-year dea route with these veterans that LeBron has earmarked and he's always been a huge Rondo guy.

Okay. Earlier this morning, someone here laid out how Kawhi was still a possibility in trade (by including Deng or a hodgepodge of young guys) and I read elsewhere that Cousins could still be in play if they made some moves like renouncing Randle and stretching Deng's contract, so I was wondering if any of that had changed.

Rondo is a backup at this stage of his career. I would think. Then again, this is a whole new ballgame with LA. Either way, lots of head cases on this team.
One year, 9 million for Rondo.

He's starting, Lonzo is gone.

I didn't read that but if I did I would have strongly disagreed based on their immediate actions following the LeBron signing. Randle was renounced which is what needed to occur for LA to sign another player for a contract greater than the veteran minimum which qa quickly announced to be Rondo.

The remaining moves available could be trading some of their young players which I'm fairly certain will happen by next summer for LeBron's championship run team to be ready to go in Yesr 2 but could occur sooner too. LeBron didn't come to LA to play with kids.

Is he? He started 63 of his 65 games last year.

And played 26 minutes a game.
Yeah. I know the math. But he’s likely gonna want similar minutes. Running him and Ball at same time would be...interesting. Because $9 million for a backup is fun. But it’s a one year deal so might not be a big deal.

Rondo did play with another PG last year in Jrue Holiday but it's not exactly the same situation given spacing and all that. Rondo is now another year older so you'd think he might see a minutes decrease but even if he doesn't, 26 minutes leaves a lot of time for someone else to play.

They do need another PG outside of Rondo, although I guess with James and Ingram, they'd be ok.

edit: Or they traded Ball and w/e for John Wall or something.

Wonder where Randle ends up. He seems like a guy who is going to get underpaid.
There are 4 teams with $10m+ to spend. Sacramento, Atlanta, Chicago......and the Sixers. Either of the last two would be a nice spot for him.

Keep an eye on Alan Williams who faces a July 6th cut date by Phoenix to save them over $5m. He broke out two years ago with 11/9 over the final 25 games then tore up his knee just after signing his 3/$16m deal. He could be a cheap replacement on a deal similar to what Baynes signed last year.
Cut today. He is/was a rebounding machine.

Rondo is a starting point guard in the NBA and will be starting with LeBron for the Lakers come next season.

I imagine they will play very well together. On paper I don't think this gets them by the Golden State and Houstons of the West but they sure as hell will be a fun team to watch and have some nights they could beat anybody.

The NBA is always interesting and continues to surprise.

I like this move a lot from Rondo’s side. I want him to do well except against the Cs.

Didn't even get that. NO is a pretty nice fit though.
He is going to get a nice boost playing next to Davis. Also sets him up to hit UFA next year when half the league forgets the discipline of the last two years and spends like sailors again.

Cousins was out when they started signing guys to one-year deals. (They could have created about $25M in space by renouncing Randle and stretching Deng but that shipped sailed.)

They can always trade for Kawhi assuming SAS agrees to a package with matching salaries.

Really? While it's not out of the question that they mesh, I think the more likely scenario is that they get into a fist fight at some point during the year.

What's LBJ going to do while RR is pounding the ball and probing probing probing looking to make the highlight play?

What's RR going to do when LBJ takes his guy down to the block?

Plus, it's not like RR plays a ton of defense. Someone mentioned Wayne Ellington upthread. Surprised LAL didn't go get him.
