Kind of an underwhelming group compared to years past, no? The guys with the most talent are Studnicka, Steen, and Lauko. Axel Andersson is interesting, as is Urho on defense, but neither moves the needle much. I think the two I am most interested are the goalies: Keyser and Swayman. Both seem like real talents, but the rest of the group seems very C+-ish.

They’ve graduated a bunch of guys. McAvoy, Bjork, Donato, Frederic, Heinen, JFK, Zboril, Senyshyn, etc. are all past the dev camp stage now.

I also wouldn’t sleep on Vaakanainen. I think he is their top prospect and has top 4 potential on D. I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibility that he helps the big club in some capacity this season.

Studnicka and UV are the most interesting to me.

They seem really high on Studnicka but he can't play in the AHL, so it's either NHL or back to the OHL. It'll be interesting if the team factors that into the decision when comparing him to JFK and Frederic, who have AHL flexibility. If Studnicka is ready for the NHL, another year in the OHL is probably not great for his development.

Ideally UV starts the season in the AHL. Given their starting LHD, there are going to be plenty of NHL games up for grabs for him/Zboril/Lauzon. I think long term he's an ideal partner for McAvoy

Divver said Studnicka was the best player in camp, and UV was a bit disappointing:

https://rinksiderhodeisland.com/2018/06/29/closing-the-book-on-development-camp/

JACK STUDNICKA

He was the best player in camp.

Others who had a good week: Teemu Kivihalme, Karson Kuhlman, Mitch Fossier, Oskar Steen and Philip Beaulieu.

URHO VAAKANAINEN

Nice prospect, but his camp performance confirmed that he has work to do before he is NHL ready.

“He’s one I’d want to give just a little bit of kick to just to get going a little bit,” said Langenbrunner on Tuesday. “He’s kind of feeling his way through this a little bit.’’
Anyone who's ready to contribute in the NHL should be dominating these camps. It's a little disappointing UV is not, but I'm still very high on him long-term.

Some camp news today:

Bergy won’t travel to China, he’s staying in Boston to continue rehab from his offseason hernia surgery. Skated today, hopes to be ready to go for the start of the season.

The other known injuries- Carlo’s been skating with the group, and I believe Krug joined them today. Would guess they don’t go to China either.

Has there been any info about open practices and/or the Fan Fest at Warrior like last year? Friggin kids are hassling me about whether we’re going.

Any chance any of the China games will be televised or streamed?

Also, based on the splits, my guess is the China games will be a showcase for the young centers (JFK, Frederic, Studnicka) to showcase where they are at. Interesting that Bjork and Heinen are staying, and Donato is going. Not sure what the rationale is there.

Heinen (and Kuraly) were excused because they went to China earlier this summer on the teams first trip. Most of the players coming off injury (everyone except Carlo) are in the Boston group, so my guess is that is why Bjork stayed behind. Also, if he’s truly being looked at to play on the Bergy line, it would make some sense to keep him with Bergy.

Between Bjork probably starting in Providence/IR and Bergeron and Krejci not going to China, there's a huge opportunity for 1 or 2 of Frederic/Studnicka/JFK to get some playing time with the top 9 and push for a spot on the team.

Out of those three, I think all around Frederic has impressed me the most. Studnicka wows you the most, but looks a year or two away. JFK does everything right as far as possession and in his own zone, but lacks the ability to create offense.

Kuhlman impressed the hell out of me last game. As I said in the game thread, he's like Czarnik, but a winger and stronger like in a Rechhi mold. I kept seeing him make plays, and by the end of the 1st I stopped having to look him up. I really liked his game.

I’d pump the brakes a bit on Kuhlman. I think he is more Acciari than Czarnik. Kuhlman had 80 points over 4 college seasons, Czarnik had 169 in his 4 years. Kuhlman profiles as more of 4th line energy/grinder than a playmaker like Czarnik.

Winnik earned a spot on the Wild last season on a PTO and went 6-17-23 in 81 games. B's would be his 9th team in 12 seasons.

I also completely forgot that Stempniak was a deadline deal in 2016. He went 3-7-10 in 19 games for the B's.

All fair points. It's like getting a drink after walking in a desert for a long time. Everything seems better.

Acciari is a good comp. Interesting player. Should definitely help Providence.

Bergy dealing with back spasms, won’t be on ice to start camp tomorrow. They think it is related to the groin surgery.

Sure, but at the same time that made Czarnik an AHL all star, while Acciari has been a successful 4th line NHL player.

I don't think Kuhlam is ever going to fill a top 6 line on the Bruins, but he is a very good skater, and just relentless on the PK. I suspect if you line the 3 up Czarnik is the most talented, Aviari is most physical, and Kuhlman will probably have the best career, because he has the best combination of doing everything pretty good, and a couple things well

Forwards who can’t score in college have an extremely low chance of sticking in the NHL. Guys like Kuhlman just don’t make it. Acciari, Schaller, and Kuraly were all significantly more accomplished scorers in the NCAA and they’re still just defensive 4th liners who can’t score in the NHL.

Lines in China today. Some C shuffling.

Marchand - JFK - Pastrnak
Bakos/DeBrusk - Studnicka - Donato
Nordstrom/Cehlarik - Frederic - Backes
Wagner - Cave - Szwarz

Zboril/Vaakanainen - McAvoy
Moore - Miller
Grzelcyk - Carlo

Interesting to me that they are seemingly keeping the Frederic line together for the game on Wednesday, perhaps he’s nudged ahead in that 3C spot.

I didn’t get to watch yeaterday’s game but it sounds like Jakub Lauko made an impression. Curious to see where he ends up this season. He says he wants to stay in North America, not go back to his Czech team. They could send him to junior, or maybe Providence, but I’m not sure what kind of ice time he would get in Providence with the glut of wingers in the organization.

Senyshyn got himself in a fight. Guess that’s a way of him trying to show the team he’s going to be “grittier.”

It is early, and it is only 1 preseaon game, but Heinen and Krejci appear to play well together. Heinen was on the ice for 11 scoring chances for, 3 against. He’s in the mix for one of the top 6 RW openings.

I watched the game yesterday, and agree Lauko stood out. He was a constant pain in the ass on the forecheck, and played a solid two way game. He's also got some real skating talent, in addition to some hands. They did very well getting him in the 3rd round. If he can play in Providence, I would send him there. I think he might be ready.

Heinen and Krejci stood out as clearly above everyone else.

As for Frederic, I have him ahead of JFK and Studnicka in that order. Studnicka is going to be a player, but he's too inconsistent. He needs another year or two, but is a much more dynamic player than JFK. Frederic has been solid everywhere. I think he deserves the nod right now at the 3C.

If Heinen and Krejci click, that would put to bed any thought of breaking up the top line, and add to the second scoring line as well. I think Heinen is the kind of player who could benefit a lot from Krejci's ability to see the zone and slow the play down, so that would be awesome.

I assume that would likely send Donato to Providence so he can get playing time with the top lines down there, instead of being on the 3rd or 4th line in Boston.

I don’t see how they send Donato down. Too much offense, even if he ends up on the 3rd line they can shelter him at ES and pump his PP ice time. I think Bjork is going to end up being the odd man out to start the season. He missed the rookie tournament because he didn’t feel like he was in game shape coming off the shoulder injury. He has been practicing with the group in Boston, but didn’t play on Saturday and isn’t on the travel roster for tonight. He still has time to get into game action in the preseason, but I think he is likely headed to Providence to start the year to build back up.

If I had to pick the opening night 23 right now:

Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak
DeBrusk - Krejci - Heinen
Donato - JFK - Backes
Wagner - Kuraly - Acciari
Nordstrom Frederic

Chara - McAvoy
Krug - Carlo
Moore - Miller
Grzelcyk

Rask
Halak

Lines will probably be different. Heinen could be flipped with Donato, or Pasta dropped down to the Krejci line with Heinen or Donato riding shotgun on the top line. I think they could end up keeping both Frederic and JFK for the first week or two as a hedge against Bergy not being ready to go, especially since they open with a back-to-back on the road.

Yeah, I agree with that lineup. Feels like Frederic has outplayed JFK so far, but I am not seeing practices and JFK is much more sound in his own zone. Bergeron not being ready solves the issue in some sense, but I could also see them putting Kuraly as the 3C and using Nordstrom, Acciari or Wagner as the 4C.

Gryz as our 7th is a nice luxury to have on paper. In reality, I expect he's getting regular time by the 5th game due to injury. Bruins cannot keep their defense healthy lately, especially at the end of the year.

I think it's pretty certain that Bjork starts in Providence and Donato in Boston. I think the 3C is going to determine how they deal with the wingers, if it's JFK I can see them keeping Heinen there with Backes and using that line like they did with Nash, taking some tougher defensive assignments. If it's Frederic I would think they'd pair him with Donato so they can shelter them together, bumping Heinen up to the top 6. I also think Frederic being 3C would make it more likely they move Pastrnak down with Krejci and use Bergeron's line more defensively than they did last year.

I'm curious if they see Frederic as a short term possibility at wing if him and JFK both earn their way into the lineup.

I’m feeling like Frederic i probably in the lead for the spot too, because of a number of subtle reasons - the official Bruins sources keep showing coaches singing his praises, and then him sticking with Backes in practice lends me to think this is all prepping everyone for him making the team. As to the 7th D I’d have to believe even without injury Grz and Moore will see a pretty healthy rotation to start the season. Gives Moore the chance to get practices under his belt and learn the system and keeps Grz in game shape.

He hasn’t been playing wing from what I can tell and while he’s played some wing in college, he really is a better center prospect. He’s a two way guy who has size and can skate well. I believe he grew up idolizing Backes, so I would imagine this has been a dream for him to play with him in the early going.

These are good points. I feel he’s ahead based on what I’ve seen from them in the preseason, but we may see both quite a bit this year.

First round of cuts are in:

For the most part just dumping extra bodies that were brought in to fill out camp with half the team on the other side of the world. Mark Fayne and Marcel Noebels released from PTO’s. Cedric Pare, Kyle Keyser and Daniel Bukac returned to juniors. Wiley Sherman assigned to Providence along with Galipeau, McKenzie, Messner, Pond and some guy named Sakellaropoulos.

My favorite nugget from the article:

As it turns out, the Bruins actually have an ever so slightly higher chance at winning the Stanley Cup over the second-ranked Atlantic team, despite a lower chance of making the playoffs and it’s due to a higher chance of not being on the Atlantic side of the Eastern Conference bracket. Isn’t the playoff format grand for even making this probability quirk possible? Sigh.
