Rumors from Spain today that Chelsea and Atletico have finally agreed on a fee, and that Costa will be loaned to Everton through January.
Chelsea doesn't want Costa. Costa wants to come to Atletico.

What does Atleti do? Well, as of this afternoon, the answer is apparently: screw it up.

All summer long to figure out a way to get him back to Calderon, and Atletico seems just about ready to screw up the transfer.

Jeremy Toljan (23) from Hoffenheim to Dortmund for about 7mil.€ with contract until 2022.

On the other side of the road (same article), Felix Passlack (19) signed an extension with Dortmund until 2021 and then was loaned to Hoffenheim until 2019.

If anything, Juventus are still reeling somewhat from Bonucci's departure and could use some shoring up defensively.
Schalke has loaned Benedikt Höwedes to Juventus for a fee of EUR 3.5 million and an option to buy worth at least EUR 13 million which could become compulsory and increase to EUR 16 million if incentives are met.

http://www.juventus.com/media/native/investor-relations-docs/english/price-sensitive-press-releases/2017-2018/comunicato 30082017 howedes eng.pdf

This should go a long way to filling the hole left by Bonucci. Höwedes was captaining his club, played in every match at the World Cup and offers great positional flexibility on the back line.

Renato Sanches to Swansea for a season long loan. I've seen several rumors about the details - €6m fee, guaranteed first team minutes, and even an option to buy. In any case, it's a fantastic get for Swansea. Clearly Bayern trust Clement to develop their starlet , and it will be a lot of fun to watch. If Sanches plays like he did at the Euros, he could tilt more than a few matches in Swansea's favor.

And PSG's Krychowiak to a West Brom for the year. I think that's a marvelous match of player and manager. Should help the Baggies ' CBs quite a bit.

Edit: Rummenigge say no option for Swansea to buy Sanches.

Aurier to Spurs. Official. Great move for Spurs. Llorente looks to be having his medical there as well and maybe Ross Barkley.

Swansea is getting Bony back and Sanches looks to be on his way.

VVD has reportedly left training to go somewhere.

Mahrez is rumored to be in Barca or London.

Jadon Sancho (17) joins Dortmund from ManCity for something between 7mil.€ - 8mil.£ with a big sell-on clause.

I mean usually Pep brings up such guys, he brought them at Barca and at Bayern. Of course the chance to get minutes is bigger at Dortmund.

The shear incompetence of Wenger and our board is staggering. If we genuinely offered 92m for him, and couldn't get the seal done, we might as well close up shop.

Per Ornstein, looks like it was a matter of Lemar turning Arsenal down:

Also sounds like Arsenal's bid for Lemar in July topped out at £52m, and they nearly doubled it today with the Sanchez bid in from City.

Also, Davide Zappacosta looks to be Chelsea's backup plan to Oxlade-Chamberlain at RWB - he's signed from Torino (rumored £25m)

In the "nobody could possibly give a shit but me, and probably not even me" category: Apparently Lamine Kone is moving from Sunderland to Palace. Not quite what we were hoping for.

This is according the The Guardian's live blog (which is now showing Mbappe to PSG is done).

The amazing thing is that Palace have made four first-team signings this window, and three are center backs:

Loftus-Cheek
Riedewald (CB)
Fosu-Mensah (CB)
Sakho (CB)

If Allardyce was still there I'd love that signing, he was pretty good two years ago under Big Sam before the combination of not going to Everton and David Moyes drained him of all life-force.

Those are three athletic and mobile center backs. A good coach could organize a solid back-3 out of them.
If only we had one of those :(

Having Dann and Tomkins for depth seems pretty good.

I guess this is one way to make Wayne Hennessey look better.

Some people on the Palace BBS think Big Sam is coming back. I'm....skeptical to say the least. But if Sakho and Kone are both signed, that's a pretty serious sign.

This is madness: reports are saying that Ross Barkley backed out of a £30m move to Chelsea while undergoing his medical. How does that even happen? Like, was he on the treadmill and said "thanks but no thanks boys, I'm good?"

From many reports, it sounds like Barcelona are trying to sign Angel Di Maria.

I'm sure their fans will be thrilled with Bartomeu for bringing in a Madridista if this goes through

OK .. apologies if this belongs in a generic transfer rules thread ..

The football press always claims that a given player's hypothetical transfer fee is heavily influenced by the years left on the player's contract.

On the short end we have Alexis , Ozul, Ox as prime examples. On the long end we have VVD and Coutinho. But Arsenal received 35m for a player on his last year (Ox) .. and was rumoured to be getting 55m for Alexis who was in a similar position.

Given that any transferred player invariably signs a new deal with his new club, negotiated long before the transfer takes place, what difference does the length of the current contract make? When is the last time a transferred player kept his original contract? Does this happen?

They can start negotiating for a pre-contract with a new club once they are down to 6 months. The closer you are to that, the less incentive you are to pay a fee in addition to paying a player a higher salary than they are currently earning. More years means more control over the player and less pressure to sell.

But "tapping up" seems to be the general rule - even if not technically allowed. I understand the scenario with not having to sell a player on a current long term contract. VVD and Coutinho being prime examples. And I understand the threat of leaving on a free gives incentive to the team to get what they can.

But if a player is in demand I still don't see what the current contract has to do with a potential transfer fee. That, surely is determined by the current market for the player (given the presumed nudge nudge wink wink regarding future contract terms).

Only if they are in a different country . English clubs can only get a pre-contract with a player at an English club when they have 30 days left on their contract I believe.

Yeah, that's definately an English thing. That rule doesn't exist in Portugal.

If Coutinho's deal expires in May, Liverpool would have been way more open to Barca's offers and likely would have accepted before they offered 150.

I think you are missing my point. Obviously an expiring contract motivates the team to sell. But the ultimate transfer fee is determined by the market for the player. If Barca and PSG and Real Madrid all were interested in Coutinho the transfer fee would have nothing to do with the expiring contract status .. it would solely be determined by a combination of the highest bidder - with the consideration of the player's wishes as well.

The perfect example was Ox .. with a year left, if that mattered the fee should have been around 20m (according to most of the pundits I heard). but both Liverpool and Chelsea wanted the player - thus creating an inflated market. So Arsenal took the highest bid from a team acceptable to the player (Liverpool).

I don't get your point. You asked what difference the length of a players contract makes. The contract length matters because if it gets run down to a year or under the player can threaten to run out his contract so the team that he played for won't get a transfer fee.

Ox's fee is inflated because he's English, young, and versatile. Coutinhos quoted fee was inflated because Barca are idiots who are desperate to make a splash.

Yeah, the point is that if Coutinho's contract was expiring in 12 months and he had turned down an extension, everyone would know that Liverpool would probably have to sell or risk getting nothing for him, meaning Barca could offer a market rate. In this case, Liverpool have him under contract for 5 years, so they were under no pressure to sell, and Barca would need to make a huge offer well over the market rate to convince Liverpool to give up the several years of control they have over him.

Another thing to remember when you hear all these numbers thrown out is that not all transfer fees are equal. A 130 million Euro offer where you receive a check for 130 million is much different than a "130 million" offer where you receive 16 million a year for the next 5 years, plus some big bonuses that aren't likely to be met (like the player winning multiple Ballon d'Ors or if they win multiple Champions Leagues).

Wait!?!?!?!??!? Do you not think that either Lovren, Milner, Coutinho, Salah, Or Can has a chance the the Ballon D'or?

i Mean they're the front bid, how that 300M for Hazard is off the table

Ahh .. but your Coutinho scenario is exactly what I'm talking about. If Coutinho was on an expiring contract, Liverpool would be forced to sell him. And if Barca was the only team making an offer Liverpool would take what it could get from Barca. But if Bayern or PSG came in as well it's basically an auction.

Now .. if the player only has eyes for one team that means there isn't really a "market" . Wherein Liverpool (or Arsenal or Southhampton) are screwed.

I'll try to frame this in a somewhat different way. When a player is transferred the buying team isn't acquiring a contract as such because they invariably immediately rip it up and issue a new multiyear deal.

So the player's old contract was basically irrelevant. The fact that it was expiring soon simply meant his old team was heavily motivated to sell. But , once the selling team decides to move the player, the transfer fee is determined by the number of interested teams - just like any transfer that becomes an auction.

I find the dynamics of the transfer window fascinating. In a labour market where players have the upper hand - due to EU labour laws presumably - it's completely different from North American pro sports where contracts are inviolable and the teams have all the power.

But , it seems teams are starting to push back - the combination of long term contracts and an environment where the Premier League is awash in cash , teams can effectively snub their noses at the traditional powers in world football.

Well, the other counter to the super rich was absurd trigger clauses. It’s staggering that didn’t protect Barca from losing Neymar. You wonder where the ceiling really is for these fees.

Looks like the Premier League will close the incoming transfer window the day before the season begins, starting in 18/19:

Breaking: Premier League to amend summer transfer window, starting 2018/19. Window to now close 1700 on Thursday before start of season.
I like it from the perspective of an EPL fan. I can see this causing issues with existing release clauses, but I assume one of the provisions will be that all release clauses on existing contracts will have to be audited to expire at the end of the registration window (if they aren't already).
