Why nervous? I ask mainly because Haley's never blown me away as a great coordinator, so a new one who is (1) better and (2) gets along with the QB seems like a step forward for Pitt.
Because I think Big Ben is a dumb jock and am not crazy about him gettting organizational power.

I’m not going to defend Haley as a guy, but I’ve always liked his offenses. Took two seasons in Pitt for take hold, but once it did it was very productive and it cut down on the number sacks he took. Although it was unable to get him to learn that throwing the ball away vs taking a strip sack is optimal.

The Steelers are arguably the most talented team in the league and are almost certainly more talented than the Patriots. But it's a team sport, the right players not the best players, etc... Oh, and coaching. That may have some effect.
Kind of already covered, but just to distill it:
There’s physical talent and there’s mental talent.

That’s not to say that the Steelers are idiots, or the Pats players are all geniuses.

I don’t think they are parting ways with Tomlin, but that’s interesting.

Interesting because Cowher has been out of coaching for 12 years — the same length of time Joe Gibbs was out when he returned to Washington for Part II. Cowher is 61; Gibbs was 64 when he returned.

Cowher has stayed much closer to the game; Gibbs was running his race car team. On the other hand, as good as Cowher was (and I think he was very good), Gibbs was legitimately great.

But he wasn’t as good the second time around. More than respectable, but he did not sniff a SB during Part II.

The big problem with replacing Tomlin — who is available who is likely materially better? I can’t think of anyone.

The end of half, end of game “strategery” deficiencies — they are the norm, not the exception. It’s astounding coaches don’t do better and that owners do not demand better.

I watched a lot of Gibbs part 2. It was a very good coaching job. He made the playoffs twice and won a game.

They even made it in 2007 the year Sean Taylor was murdered.

Gibbs is a really impressive dude. The high level of success in 3 seemingly unrelated domains is very special.

He won SBs with three different QBs; none of them are in Canton. But during Part I, no salary cap. Jack Kent Cooke was paying $800,000 to back up linemen when that was a lot of money.

Also in that article he showed up much later to the GAME than everyone else. Yet, the article says that Tomlin hasn't lost the locker room. Even coaches are showing up late. Why the hell would he tolerate that?
It didn't mention this in the PFT article, I clicked through to the Pittsburgh Gazette article and holy cow (emphasis mine):
As another example, Tomlin wants players and coaches to report to the locker room two hours before kickoff for games. That was continually ignored by both players and a coach or two.
Some coaches might put up with a star player breaking the rule once or twice, but I can't imagine most head coaches would put up with a subordinate coach or two who "continually ignored" his requirement that they show up at a certain time for games. I am pretty surprised that PFT did not put that in their article, though they are definitely doing some sniping at Bell the last couple of weeks.

Maybe Bell shouldn't have been going back and forth with Pats fans at like midnight last Saturday night.

But Tomlin says you gotta embrace social media. So no issue!

Edit: I don't even mean to troll. I know it's a sensitive issue. But this stuff just writes itself. It's too easy right now. Tomlin has no control.

I understand the comparisons that are being made given “the Patriot Way” and all, but I find the finger pointing of the Steelers players’ attitude to be tiresome. Lev Bell’s contract disputes and tardiness on game day isn’t why they lost. The dude had over 150 yards, nine catches, and two TDs! If I were Tomlin, I’d think about sending him an Uber 30 minutes before kickoff if that’s how he was going to play!

Their offense wasn’t a problem—35 points (I’m ignoring the last TD) SHOULD win you a playoff game. No, the problems were defense and in game coaching decisions. Given their attrition, there’s not much they could do about the defense I guess, but if I were a Steelers fan I’d hope Tomlin learns from his decisions. They (he) seemed to be on tilt for the better part of the second half, especially on the second fourth down.

Beyond that, as much fun as it is to make fun of Omar Epps, according to that smoke-blowing Ringer article on the Pats, the Steelers have the second highest point differential in the league since the Pats started their run, and third highest since 2011. That means they are always “in it” year in and year out. How many franchises would kill for that?

Separately, while it’s certainly gotten better of late, I would love to know how Pitt seems to always correctly evaluate the receiver position in the draft. Damn, do they hit pay dirt every other year...

How pissed are the Steelers going to be if Brady doesn't play Sunday?
So every single atom on the entire planet would have followed the same path through space time if the Steelers had beaten the Jags?
Brady still would’ve injured his hand?
Always amazed when people think that way. My position is that everything would be different.
My favorite analogy in a football sense is when people say, “if only they didn’t miss that FG back in whatever quarter” after having lost by 1 or 2 points, and assuming everything that followed that miss would have payed out the same way. Right off the bat things are different. You missed the FG and the opponent takes over with that field position. You make and you kick off to the opponent and something vastly different can happen. For instance the opponent can run back that kick off, which he can’t do on a missed FG. And on and on.
He’ll if the Steelers won Brady could’ve been abducted by aliens, returned to earth by said aliens and endowed with super powers( different than the super powers he currently has) and beat the Jags single handed(pun intended) meaning 1 against 11, playing all positions on O and D. 1 against 22 I guess. But I digest. Out!

That's a lotta words.

Maybe the Steelers would watch the game all metaphysical like this, or maybe they'd see Hoyer put up 6 points and be pissed.

I don't know any personally, but I'm guessing the latter.

The “Patriot Way” stuff always gets thrown around with an eye roll, as if it’s some sort of cultish phenomenon.

Basically, “The Patriot Way” amounts to: work hard and don’t be an asshole, which is how most of the jobs in the world work, anyway.

I mean, I guess my office is an adherent to The Patriot Way because we all show up on time, get our shit done, and don’t flip out when our raises aren’t as big as we’d like.

I’m not a Minnesota native so whatever. But anyone showing up here for the super bowl who says “Minny” to the wrong person at the wrong time, well, he might just get his feelings hurt by a passive aggressive comment.

I hear Minny is like the San Fran of the Midwest. Is that true?

More of a PAC NW laid-back, slightly hipster vibe.

But also lots of earnest beards. It can get tough to tell if the discussion about ice fishing at the brew pub is ironic or not.

But don’t joke about the Gophers. Unless your with some Sconnies. But jeez, fuck them.

I moved here from NYC, and I was pleasantly surprised that I could wear a flannel shirt in every restaurant and nobody would bat an eye.

Even ones that had won James Beard awards.

The Big-Apple of Fly-Over Country?
Well that’s Chicago, obviously. We’re more like if you took Seattle and put it in the middle of the woods surrounded by lakes instead of by the ocean. About the same size as Seattle, in fact. People tend to forget that there’s a sizable city up here in America’s Canada.

Anyway there’s a super bowl thread in the BLTS forum if anyone want to continue this wonderful discussion.

Just barely in the United States: Minny, Seattle, San Antonio, Chula Vista.

Get that Sconnie-only shit out of here.

New Glarus is weirdly proud of not shipping outside Wisconsin. And their beer is fine (although Spotted Cow is really overrated; Moon Man is much better).

Interesting article that suggests our next clue about Shazier’s health will be whether the Steelers sign him to a contract extension.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/platform/amp/pittsburgh-steelers-nfl-features-news-blog-long-form/2018/2/2/16959876/breaking-down-the-ryan-shazier-contract-situation-and-the-steelers-options-salary-cap-injury-news

Tl;dr version — his career is probably over, but if he’s on the road to a full recovery, the NFL would likely sign off on an extension that allowed the Steelers to spread out the cap hit for his guaranteed money; if he’s not going to walk again, the league would nix such an extension as blatant salary cap manipulation.

Thank you for all the contribution here.

If one of the Steelers fans here can start a new one for 2018 that'd be cool as well.
