I know last year, while exciting at times, had an incredibly frustrating (and unlucky, I would argue) ending...but we have a shit ton of talent and a big game vs Florida in a little more than a week...what do you say, folks...let's get the chatter going.

It's always great to be a Michigan Wolverine.

Cautiously optimistic about the OL. Plenty of talent at RB, WR, and TE. Not sold on Speight, but whatever.

I think DL will be fine. Thin at LB. Inexperience at S, but I like the talent (Kinnel, Metellus).

Most worried about CB. Doesn't sound like anyone has stepped up from among a very young and inexperienced group.

I think they'll scrape by Florida, and then settle in until Penn St.

I think we'll see a different offense from the team this year. Last year, the team rushed 574 times and passed 370 times. While I think they will stick with that ratio in the early going while the OL gels, once those guys settle in and the new young WRs get some experience, I think this team will be running an offense similar to the Pats. Lots of 3/4/5 wide and quick drops for Speight. I don't think the offense will be asked to do much, but they should be able to roll against everyone other than UF, PSU, Wisco, and OSU.

While the OL is breaking in new faces, they are more talented and should be competitive. They have Cole, Bredeson, and Onwewu should all be solid. Kugler or Ruiz will hold down C (I bet it's Ruiz by the end of the year), but RT is definitely a lil sketchy. Runyan is the presumed starter, but I'm not confident in him. Ulizio seems to be almost ready and is a mean SOB. I have little confidence in JBB other than as a backup. Overall, a thin group, but with hopefully 4, 5, 6 guys who can do a good enough job to let the WRs get loose.

At least one and hopefully (likely?) two of DPJ, Black, Collins, and Martin shows they're ready for real PT early. My guess is DPJ fires out of the gate, Black follows shortly behind him, and Martin makes a real impact this season too. Collins looks like he could use some refinement - likely just a read zone jump ball specialist this year, although a redshirt may be the best route for him. I don't think Crawford will be that good, so we will really need to lean on the Freshmen Four a lot.

At TE, Bunting will hopefully replace a lot of what Butt did. Butt was an outstanding receiver, but he also dropped more passes than he should've last year. I really hope Ty Wheatley Jr. puts it all together. A guy with his size and agility is super rare and if he can figure it out, he'd be a real unique weapon. Khalid Hill is back to continue wrecking people.

The RBs should be improved with another year in the system and Speight should build on last year and be more consistent. Evans and Higdon will split carries all of which will be reasonably productive and Ty Isaac will be given some chances to show his stuff. UM really needs to try and land a stud RB soon. Walker should be a good runner going forward, but it seems like RB is a position where young guys can make an immediate impact.

Speight will be the starter and Peters is likely the backup. O'Korn did nothing last year and is too risky for this team's offense-defense profile (i.e. the defense will win most games as long as the offense puts up at least 17 points and limits TO).

The defense will be at least a top 10 unit, and likely a top 5. The DL is going to be insane. Gary looks like he could play on the interior, but instead he will wreak havoc from SDE. Forget running to that side either. I assume teams will try to lineup TEs on his side, but if they don't do that and double him with a guard instead, Mone and Hurst will destroy the interior. Not to mention Winovich at WDE will be able to take on a lot of OLs 1v1. They have lots of talented backups too headlined by Solomon. Solomon will be true frosh Gary redux. Carlo Kemp is getting positive buzz in camp as is Dwumfour. At WDE no one is a clear cut backup (Vilain?), but I think it's easier to fill in those guys as even some LBs can fill in there. A rotation of 7 DL probably gets it mostly done. Watch out for gold domer hatin' Jeter too.

McCray comes back to hold down MLB. The kid played extremely well last year and solidified what was a potentially sketchy D corps. Bush will be playing alongside him in the middle and apparently is a LB in the London Fletcher mold (short, stout and brings the wood). I doubt teams will be able to run between the tackles at all against this D and really since Gary will shut down the perimeter on one side, only the perimeter away from him will be viable. Hudson is your new Viper and while it is impossible to replace what Peppers did on D, this guy is supposed to be tailor-made for the unique role. In Don Brown's BC defenses, the Viper racked up huge tackling numbers and I expect that he will deliver. There's not a ton of obvious backups for these guys (Singleton, Wrobo?), so the backups will be getting a lot of PT against Cincy, AF, Purdue, MSU, and IU before the PSU game to make sure the team stands a chance if and when those guys come out.

The back end of the defense is by far the sketchiest. Hill and Long are your starting CBs, and while I think Long will be good from the get go, Hill doesn't inspire the same confidence. Behind them the only other corner I wouldn't be scared to see is Ambry Thomas, but even he is very green. Getting the young guys reps before PSU will also be important. I feel pretty good with Kinnel and Metellus at S. Kinnel will be the centerfielder and Metellus played very well against FSU. There's also no experience backing up these guys, so hopefully some younger guys get into the games before PSU.

Prediction time!

UF (neutral) - I think UM wins this one because UF can't throw the ball. They have shitty QBs and the Calloway suspension is the one that actually hurts. This game will be ugly, but the offense does just enough and the D looks excellent against a bad offense. 20-13. 1-0.

Cincy - Big UM win. Stats for everyone. 2-0.

Air Force - Big UM win. Stats for everyone on offense. Play for no injuries on defense. Do not schedule these dudes again please k thanks. 3-0.

@Purdue - Big UM win. Stats for everyone. 4-0.

MSU - Big UM win. Stats for everyone. Even more than Cincy and Purdue. Harbaugh will want to bury this program that is teetering a lot. 5-0.

@IU - Big UM win. Stats for everyone. This team was frisky with Kevin Wilson. Now it's back to really shitty IU. 6-0.

@PSU - I really don't get all the hype for PSU. They will beat the bad teams on their schedule, but their win against OSU last season was super flukey. If this game were earlier in the season, I'd say that PSU takes it, but it's not, and UM will have their OL, WR, and backups up to speed by this point. Is this a tough game, absolutely. Could I see UM losing, yes. Nevertheless, give me Harbaugh > Franklin every day. UM win. 7-0.

Rutgers - Big UM win. Stats for everyone. 8-0.

Minnesota - Tighter win than we'd like. This is the trap game coming off a powderpuff Rutgers and before visiting old friend Durkin. 9-0.

@MD - Another tighter win than we'd like, but UM is just far ahead enough to win this tougher than it appears game against a vastly improving MD program. 10-0.

@ Wisco - Loss. The pressure on this team will be immense going into this game as either 10-0, 9-1, or maybe a bit less so at 8-2 (they'd probably still be in the hunt for the East division presuming one of the losses is against UF - don't see them losing to @PSU and @MD). Camp Randall is a really hard place to win and the Badgers should be pretty good. 10-1.

OSU - A BIG FUCKING W. It's about time this one swings our way. Getting them at home with a berth for the B1G championship on the line, UM wins a squeaker over the bad guys.

Final Notes:

  • PSU has a tough tough schedule this year. The game vs. Pitt in week 2 is usually pretty tough (they lost last year), @Iowa in week 4 will be very hard, although better than late in the year, @ Northwestern is a harder midseason matchup than UM has, vs. UM, @OSU, vs. Nebraska, and @MD. No way is PSU coming out of that schedule better than 9-3.
  • OSU has a very manageable schedule. Vs. Oklahoma in week 2 will be tough, but I expect them to win. @ Nebraska might be a little tricky, but they will be ready. Home against PSU, they will be out for revenge and crush them. @Iowa in November is interesting. Maybe Iowa can return the favor and hang an L on them. Two cupcakes before they come to A2.
  • As a result of OSU's schedule, I expect them to be 7-1 or 8-0 in conference games (undefeated in the division) coming into The Game.
  • Michigan's season comes down to @ PSU, @ MD, @ Wisco, and vs. OSU. The UF game will be fun and a challenge, but won't have any impact on the B1G. UM could easily lose that game with a green squad, but use the next several games to break in the younguns. If they can get it together before PSU, watch out.

Just won't be the same without WayBack. I expect Michigan is going to be a great team this year. With another year under his belt, Speight can probably turn into one of the country's elite QBs.

At least the Florida game isn't at the Swamp, but the reigning SEC East champs are still very dangerous. I'm looking forward to the boomerang game vs. Penn State in Happy Valley. Michigan will face a very different team than the one decimated by injuries and depth last year at the time of that game. In the end, Michigan's success likely will come down to its last two games - first vs. Whiskey, and finishing with the Tree Nuts.

Outta be an exciting season.

Your overall impression may about right with 9-3, although I see something more like 10-2, with the two losses to UM and OSU. The hype is probably centered around the transformation that Penn State made in the Minnesota game and afterwards, when McSorley was used much more often as a running threat - and a pretty dangerous one at that. Plus, I think most people regard Joe Moorhead as a very innovative and forward thinking OC. 2016 was his first at Penn State, and I think that those who are down on Penn State would have to admit the offense they put on the field last year was nothing like anything seen in Happy Valley - including the Kerry Collins - Ki-Jana carter record year in 1994. It was open and fast.

And while the Lions took a 49-35 lead into the 4th quarter of the Rose Bowl but eventually lost (against a future 1st round draft choice in Sam Darnold), I think it was pretty clear they were a very different team than the one UM saw in week 4 last year.

Zo:

I actually heard it was the other way around with the young CBs... Hill is the one that has secured one side, while Long was recently called out by Zordich for not taking control of the other side. Ambry Thomas has gotten some good mentions from Harbs, though his inconsistency (due to inexperience) has been noted. St. Juste is "wow'ing" with his athleticism, but still raw as rain.

Kind of refreshing for the rest of us that Wayback is no longer in the loop. In any event I agree with most of your post. I think they go 10-2 losing to the Badgers and....ahem, that team in Columbus. Look for a Top 10-12 finish and a trip to the Orange Bowl against Clemson. That would be a great season.

I'm interested to see how teams attack our young secondary this year. Brown has said doesn't plan on protecting the kids by using more cover 2 or zoning out.

Can't call it a great season if we don't beat Ohio. I'm still angry about last year.

I'll wait to see how they look on TV. I don't care much about uniforms. I think it's obvious to not tinker much at all with the home unis. As for aways, I never really liked the whites, so going for a Maize top is cool with me. But, they should break up it up with blue pants, or at least off-color socks. This is an obvious cash grab, but if recruits like it and it makes the program seem less stodgy, I don't care.

I'm going to continue banging the drum, but teams should both wear their primary colors when possible. If UF was willing, UM should've worn their home jerseys and UF could wear orange. More importantly, every UM-OSU game should feature blue versus scarlet. We've moved beyond black and white broadcasts, time to recognize this and let these beautiful colors pop.

I don't like the all maize at all, but I get over it fast if we can take care of the Gators today.

I like the all whites a lot and would prefer we avoid alternative unis altogether. They're almost always crappy.

The D was indeed legit. We were lucky Bush didn't get tossed bc that kid made plays all day.

Speight needs to show he's not the guy he was the last 4 games of '16.

After the horror show of back-to-back pick sixes, the team settled down and the defense was exceptional. Hopefully the offense (Speight, really) figures it out in the next month.

Pleased to win and the defense looked good but let's remember Florida was missing two of their key offensive threats so it is still early. I'm not sure that if they had more offensive weapons the Gators might have done more damage to the defense. At least that is what my crying Gator friends are saying.
Go Blue.

I was strangely unaffected by the 2nd quarter shitduggery. Michigan's coaching staff was levels above Florida's.

This week was an acceptable outcome given the youth of the team and how they spent the last week hearing everyone tell them how awesome they are. Speight feels like a concern, but his numbers are ok. Isaac is emerging as the #1 and Grant Perry has probably taken over the slot.

Perry is definitely Speight's security blanket at the receiver position. Perry made a few very nice plays on Saturday. He's been a plus.

Speight is very shaky. It is cause for significant concern if he is the best Michigan has at the QB position. His ballhandling on snaps alone would've gotten other QBs benched by now. Unacceptable.

I was wondering why Evans didn't play more. He has better vision and elusiveness compared to Isaac. I'm guessing Harbaugh wants the line to get used to playing together, which means "running the play as designed", which means Isaac is going to run to the designed hole come hell or high water. Evans has better improvisational skills, but his skills don't necessarily reinforce what the line needs to be doing with consistency from play to play. Pass pro has been pretty good relative to what Michigan has experienced the last few years.

The playcalling is a little curious to me (is it Drevno, Hamilton, or both?). Khalid Hill is a weapon, but has been very underutilized. Same for Evans and Higdon, two of the other productive returning offensive players. I like the fact that McKeon, Gentry, Eubanks, and Wheatley have seen balls at the TE position (whither Ian Bunting?).

The bigger concern is Speight's scattershot accuracy, the young WRs hands and trouble getting separation, and the underutilization of some of the returning RBs.

DPU, I feel like the staff is trying to keep Higdon and Evans fresh for the latter portion of the schedule. Ty Isaac has the ability to pull away at the second level and is giant, and I think that that has an outsized benefit for these early games. I'd expect the RBs to get more even PT going forward, unless one of them really pulls away. WRT Hill, I think the other factor going on here is keeping things off tape. Although Purdue is looking harder than expected and MSU will get up for U-M, the results against AF, Purdue, MSU, and IU should not really be in doubt. PSU will be a real test and I bet the staff is trying to keep some frippery in their back pocket for the presumable showdown.

Right now, I want to continue seeing improvement from the right side of the OL, Speight to clean up his act, for the DBs to remain healthy, and for the young WRs to continue improving. I've been impressed so far with Long, Hill, and especially Watson (relative to expectations), but who knows who the next best CB is. Similarly, Hudson, Kinnel, and Metellus have all been stellar, but I worry about next man up.

Am I alone in wondering if Drevno is the right guy?

Was there any follow on report on Isaac's injury? Although he left the game, he didn't seem to be limping or anything. Concussion from the turf?

They said it was an abdominal injury. Maybe a strain(?)

Is he not recruiting that side of the ball? Will the Amazon Prime show help?

They have two freshman QBs who are promising. Speight is no Rudock.

I also think the O line is a work in progress - they've recruited plenty of talent there, but it takes time.

The red zone is a huge problem for the offense so far. Part of it stems from Speight having trouble throwing fades and general skittishness after the pick sixes. Way too many points left on the table yesterday.

Supposedly Tarik Black has a broken foot. No bueño.

Red zone offense and play calling is not great. Searching to the point of desperation already. Harbaugh defiantly defending Speight; I have to believe the confidence just isn't there in the young receivers and tight ends. Line still not reliable enough on the right side.

Purdue will be no cakewalk on the road.

It's time for the offensive coaches to earn their money. The offense has flaws but also talent. Need to find a way to create a B- or even C+ caliber offense to go with the excellent defense.

It will be very interesting to see if they can come up with a good game plan vs. Purdue.

Saturday was certainly a concerning data point for the offense. While Isaac looked good, he went down with an injury (it looked to me like he fell awkwardly on the ball when he got tackled). The OL has been better than week 1, but still not good enough to grade road. The WRs are still looking green, and Black going down won't help things. Have to hope that DPJ is ready to step up - Perry has been a nice surprise and Crawford needs to get going. Maybe Martin or Schoenle can start turning heads? Speight has been subpar, but there's little chance JOK or Peters is better. JOK looked bad in short stints this year and last, and the rumblings I've read about indicate that Peters isn't ready. Have to hope that Speight can start developing better chemistry with his WR or the OL can improve enough to create holes for the RBs. The TEs are the wild card in all this, since they have the talent to help with both the run and pass game, so maybe the Black injury is the opportunity Bunting/Wheatley/Eubanks/Hill/Gentry need.

The defense continues to be absolute monsters. It is at least a top 10 unit and should give the offense another couple of weeks to gel. However, this Purdue game will be a real test, and I'm not expecting a blowout by any means (the line of UM -9.5 seems high to me, I'd take the points). MSU will get up for UM and has looked better than I expected, but the program is still shambolic. IU looks to be weak again with the departure of Wilson, but their game against Notre Dame will tell us more. None of these teams will be a cake walk, which is probably good for UM to see where they need to improve before the showdown with PSU (provided they go 3-0 over the next 3, not a gimme in my book).

The D was really humming, especially in the second half.

I hope Speight is all right, but darned if O’Korn didn’t look significantly better. He was gaining confidence series by series.

I thought the young CBs Long and Hill had strong games as well.

OL was the only unit that had a bad game.

I wouldn't be surprised that if Wilton is cleared that he and JOK will split time against MSU. While I was enthused by JOK, there's the reality that the coaches have never previously made him the starter over Speight. Sometimes, people just surprise you though and JOK has earned a closer look. The RBs still don't look great although Evans seems like he's ready to take the lead. The WRs didn't do much of anything outside of Perry. McKeon came out of nowhere (to me anyway) and Gentry may be the go to TE. The key to the offense though, perhaps even more than QB is settling the OL. Similar to how JOK may just play better than Speight, the coaches have to be thinking about getting Ruiz in there somehow. Maybe push Bredeson out to RT and Kugler to LG? I really don't know how much longer they can put Ulizio and to a lesser extent, Onyewu out there.

The defense continues to mow pricks down and that alone will keep this team in every game. PSU will throw a ton of prayers at the WRs and Barkley will do his thing, but I bet the Don will be ready for them. Bush vs. Barkley will be a blast.

Also, MSU will be a night game (AKA UTL IV, jk the 'UTL' naming sequence should be over).

The MSU game makes me glad I don't live in MI anymore. It was usually unbearable during the week proceeding it. This year feels similar to pre-RR/Hoke - a game we're supposed to win and won't get much pleasure out of it when we do, but we'll be heckled mercilessly by Spartans if we lose.

I can't say he's a disappointment, but I expect better out of the OL. It's hard for the QB's to progress with no time to read anything. UM received zero breaks tonight: tipped INT, fumbled punt bounced right to MSU's return guy, Lewerke drops his snap and gets the critical first down by rolling over his guy. Playcalling was odd tonight. Just when the offense would string together some positive runs, they dial up an INT.

He hasn't really won a big game yet. Our QB play and overall offensive play is terrible...in year 3.

NO ONE predicted this, especially those of us who love Michigan.

Disappointment.

I'm with you. There's no hot seat or anything of the sort, but the promise of Harbaugh was largely premised on him being a quarterback whisperer, so we'd never need to worry about that position. So far that hasn't materialized.

I am glad (and surprised) to hear Michigan fans finally admit this. I actually had no problem with Michigan football (and won't in the future) but really dislike Harbaugh and he has done nothing during his time there but showcase exactly who he is ---- he puts himself and his wacky "brand" above whatever team he's supposed to be coaching. You guys are always in the news for a new reality television series, promotional mini-camps in SEC territory & sleepovers with kickers. Harbaugh is good at self-promotion so ESPN makes sure they are ranked as a Top Ten team to start the season to hide the irrelevance of the program.

Anyway, then the football games happen and Michigan fades in the public consciousness so I guess it all gets worked out in the end.

Who would you want to coach the team?

Harbaugh can be annoying/obnoxious, but his character is better than that of most coaches, I would argue.

Look at the most successful coaches in our own conf:

- Franklin presided over the ugly rape situation at vandy

- Google "urban Meyer and prison"

Edit: more to the point, who cares about his antics and self promotion. I'm angry with his performance - that's what matters. Just win. You get paid to win.

I think the two Florida games and the Wisco game last year qualify as big wins. He beat ranked conference opponents in '15 (NW and MD), Colorado and PSU last year are nice wins. He should also get credit for winning in EL last year. But more than anything, Harbaugh deserves credit for steadying the ship and generally uniting the program and its fans. It doesn't feel like a perpetual tailspin and for that I am thankful and think his seat should be as cool as the other side of the pillow.

Of course the record against OSU, FSU, and this loss among others indicate that he's not the total bawse I thought he was. By year 3, I thought this team would be ahead of where it is because UM is a better fit for Jim than Stanford. But, looking back at his record, the Cardinal were 8-5 in his penultimate year before going 12-1 in '10. So, it's not like this is unprecedented for him.

I generally feel like Harbaugh and his staff are top notch at Xs and Os and Jimmys and Joes. There's a lot of talent on this roster, but it is young. Some JH players have stepped up right away (e.g. Bush) and others have not (e.g. DPJ). Nevertheless, this team needs to get its OL and QB situation rectified for real next year, even though those positions won't really blossom until '19 because OL take time.

I dunno. I don’t like too many college coaches
