It's not a discussion, snowflake. People still ding me about the watches, and a dozen other posters about idiosyncratic things they've said and done on the board, but I'll do my best to make this a safe space for you.

Paul - let's make the bet payable after the SB for both parties. Even if a non-Bennett TE catches a TD next week, the money's not due till the season's over. And by season we both mean, I assume, the 2016-17 National Football League season.
Sounds good. And since I'm such an accommodating guy, I'll give you Devlin as long as he lines up as a TE on the play if he catches a TD. So he's FB if he's in the back field, or an H back if he's in the slot. But if he catches one lined up next to a tackle, normal split, he counts as a TE.

You're being awful generous or awful confident.

Please don't make friendly jokes. We aren't friends and the mods have asked me not to discuss the subject yet you keep posting about it.
Can you and I have this arrangement on all topics?

Alternative post:

Mods, can we move this to the tOSU-MI gamethread?

Seriously though, I don't think I was here when it all went down, of someone could provide a link to whatever happened I would be most grateful.

Back on topic (sort of), from time to time, there has been some speculation that Gronk deserved a mention or two as part of the MVP race. I think the comments above show that, as dominant as healthy Gronk can be, he's not close to 'most valuable' - if Brady was having surgery, no one would be wondering whether the Pats should save a spot on the SB roster for him...

It's weird, this team is going to win 12 or 13 games, yet it will never feel like they truly peaked.
Shutting out Houston 27-0 with their third-string quarterback is pretty Peak Patriots if you ask me. I basically couldn't stop giggling that entire evening.

Wonder if this will open up more 2 RB sets now. Rather than having a fungible 2nd TE out there I'm sure they can create some mismatches with LGBT, Lewis and White in multiple sets. If you have both Lewis and White they can both swing out for a pass, run it with Lewis or both stay in to protect.

More than ever they are prepared to handle a Gronk-less playoffs.

Folks, please take the betting talk to either Fiskful of Dollars or do the details via PM.
Though I would be interested to see how sports book Super Bowl odds react to this development.

Right but I meant in terms of clicking on all cylinders like we saw early last year pre injuries

Where the hell is the 8 week timetable coming from? Seems like bullshit. How would he get back on the field at anywhere approaching game readiness in 2 months?

Yeah, and 8 weeks from now is like the SB. If the Patriots get to the SB, do you really want him out there having not played in 2 months?

My assumption is that there's (optimistically) maybe a 10%-20% chance of Gronk returning for the late playoffs (AFCCG/Super Bowl). At this point in the season, there's not much out there to occupy the 53rd roster spot, so they may as well wait a couple of weeks and see how he responds to the surgery before placing him on IR. Even if it's a 5% chance of him returning, the smart move would still be to eat the roster spot for now.

Yeah, and 8 weeks from now is like the SB. If the Patriots get to the SB, do you really want him out there having not played in 2 months?
It's a bit too early to worry about Gronk's effectiveness in the Super Bowl.

Good news is that he'll have plenty of time to heal for the start of 2017, and there's no reason for the Pats to go in a different direction next season. We'll take whatever we can get of Gronk until it's truly over.

He's the most talented TE of all time when healthy. Make a defense at least think about him, absolutely

Has Belichick ever stashed an injured player for two months? During the most crucial part of the season? BB's default seems to be to IR anyone who has serious doubts of making meaningful contributions within a reasonable timeframe. This would definitely fall under that umbrella.

I'd be shocked if Gronk didn't end up on IR, unless the injury isn't as severe as is being reported and he doesn't undergo surgery. If the reports are accurate, he's done until next season.

Maybe its time for Gronk to sit at the feet of Brady (vs pornstars) to learn how to keep his body together.

I could see him getting traded. I agree that he's not long for the NFL though.
There's no reason to trade him. He has a very reasonable 2017 cap hit of $7M, but they would only save $1M of that if were to be traded. They need neither the 4th round draft pick nor the $1M in cap savings that desperately.

Has Belichick ever stashed an injured player for two months?
He did with Ty Law when he got hurt in 2004. Law got hurt on October 31st, but did not go on IR until the playoffs started. Deion Branch missed 7 straight games middle of the same season with a knee injury.

It's probably a couple of weeks before they have clarity on the likely duration of his absence. Again, no reason to rush him onto IR until then.

The New England Patriots and the Gronkowski family are providing the following update regarding Rob Gronkowski's recent injuries: During the Seattle game on November 13, Rob sustained a hit to the chest that resulted in a pulmonary contusion to his lung. Rob was examined by several specialists at Massachusetts General Hospital as directed by the team, as well as an independent physician. He received medical clearance to return to play two weeks later for the New York Jets game on November 27. After a hit early in the Jets game, Rob began to experience significant back and leg pain. This injury forced him to leave the game and he did not return. With the help of the Patriots medical staff, along with the consultation of several medical experts, it has been determined that it is in Rob's best long-term interest to undergo surgery to address his lower back injury. Rob is expected to have surgery tomorrow. We do not expect that he will be able to play for the remainder of the 2016 season, but will await the results of tomorrow's surgery before making a final determination. Rob has always been one of our hardest workers and was voted captain for the leadership he provides on our team. We are deeply saddened any time a player is lost to injury. We are committed to assisting Rob throughout his recovery and look forward to his return to playing football for the New England Patriots.

I don't know the NFL's player movement rules well. Would Gronk's spot on the 53-man roster likely go to a player on the current practice squad, or is there a reasonable prospect of finding someone more useful than that?

I'm not arguing that they shouldn't keep Gronk if there's any chance he'll be ready for postseason action; just trying to gauge how useful an open roster spot, if it comes to that, is likely to be.

From seeing him on TV every Sunday, Tony Gonzalez looks like he keeps himself in outstanding shape.

y'know, that's not crazy. It seems like only a perfect situation would lure him back - but how much more perfect would Brady and Bennett and filling in for Gronk be?

Can he just return to any team, or are his rights tied up?

Usefulness sort of depends how healthy the rest of the team stays. They appear to planning to activate the third string QB to get him developmental practice reps so the opportunity cost can't be that high right now.

Is Gronk the only player that official statements are released when they get injured? I can't think of others. Neither here nor there, just curious

Really? Looks to me like he's lost about 100 lbs since he retired. I have my theories about that...

Ypu have to feel for the guy, he just can't stay on the field, he's a huge guy and opposing players hit him like a truck trying to bring him down, the body can take only so many violent shots week after week before giving out.

I've lost count on how many surgeries he's had, anyone have an idea on the number? Not sure how much longer he can take this sort of pounding and keep coming back for more.

You can be a workout warrior all you want, nothing you can do about blown out knees, broken bones, ankle sprains and shots to the back.

Time to circle the wagons, everyone on offense needs to step up their game to pick up the slack.

TE isn't a longevity position. Gronk is already in the discussion for the GOAT, non-Tony-Gonzalez Division. But we've probably seen the best of him at this point.

It's disappointing for sure but clearly not a season killer. Especially with the current state of the AFC. I think the real concern now is their margin to absorb additional injuries is now significantly reduced.

I mean with a healthy Gronk I don't think anyone would really be concerned if someone like Hogan pulled up lame and missed time. But no without Gronk there is the obvious lack of depth at TE but an injury to Edelman, amendola, White, etc... leads to a place that could get scary for the offense. And unfortunately there is a lot of football to be played before the playoffs start. Hopefully the injury bug doesn't decide to show up now.

I'm surprised so many people here are saying his career might be over.Too early and we haven't even heard from Gronk himself on the matter.

That statement sheds no light on how he got a herniated disc, and we'll probably never know for sure

I'm sure he's off the juice or on less, at least, but it also just sucks to weigh that much and lots of guys choose to ditch mass when they no longer need it regardless of whether they're still sitting on needles.

Does it even specify what kind of back injury it is?

Statement from Pats and Gronk family, which is now I think the second time they have realeased a joint statement. Sounds done and waiting to be IRd but will wait until after tomorrow's procedure.
Family is protective of Gronk and has consideration for fans. The Pats join them in that.

It's Boston; media shitheads are gonna shithead. A statement like this diminishes, though does not eliminate, crap like, "what are they hiding" and then, "Pats are pressuring Gronk to get back on the field."

Not sure it's a media conspiracy tho. It's pretty clear that Team Gronk has been very protective of their asset in the past w/r/t the team – perhaps overly so. Point being, I don't think guys like Curran are pulling things out of thin air when they say the Pats are mulling their options going forward.

Gronk is also an adult and has an agent that he pays a lot of money to. Why does his family need to be involved in any statement he makes?
