Golly gee whiz what a swell guy!

Maybe he can auction off some game worn gear from the Redskins game on Thanksgiving.

All things considered, I didn't find anything objectionable about his comment. (Although it further exposes McAdoo as clueless. If you want to bench a guy you do it. Even Sean McDermott knows that. "Eli will start; his streak will continue, but we will replace him with the other guys every game" would be pants-wetting funny.)

Now Eli will have more time to focus on his Memorabilia fraud case that's coming up in March.

To get a read on what they have on the QB depth chart. With having a top 5 pick coming up, they have a chance to get a franchise QB and they need to see what they have before making a decision whether to draft at QB or another position.
Fair enough, but it seems like Geno is a known quantity, and if Webb isn't even ready, I just don't understand the point, unless they are just now tanking

As much as I hate Eli, it's a dick move by the Giants to do this. What's the point? If they had a high draft pick sitting who they wanted to see play that would be one thing but Geno freaking Smith?

As the #3 QB, Davis Webb has not taken many snaps in practice since training camp. I can see Webb playing in a couple weeks once his practice reps are ramped up and he's ready.

Exactly. Maybe Geno can flip the bird to some Giants fans.

So then rev up his practice reps and play eli until he's ready. You're going nowhere, Eli is not only a 2-time championship winner for your team, but the face of it. Why piss him off, piss your fan base off, for a known quantity in Geno Smith?

Tom Brady has lost 2 SB’s to a guy who was benched for Geno Smith. This world will never make sense to me.

Eli was given the option to keep starting but was told he'd have to share playing time with Smith and Webb. He elected to sit. It's not like McAdoo told him he was benched. Eli could've kept playing.

Dick move by Giants: yes, clearly.

Eli benching himself: technically, but in actuality they are benching him but giving him the opportunity to make a farce of himself by technically starting. Good for him for not playing it that way (he's a douche bag, but in this he's right).

I don't know anything about Davis Webb, so I don't know if they should be giving him some play or not, but if it's a decision between closing out the season with a hint of dignity and going down with your vet, or playing Geno Smith...

But WHY would he have to share playing time with Geno? That part makes zero sense. They should have elevated Webb to #2, increased his snaps, then started him if/when ready.

I read it as he'd have the option to keep starting just to keep the streak going, but then he'd sit in favor of the other guys. I don't blame him for saying no.

They should have just let him play out the year and then move on from him. Benching him now is a shitty thing to do to a guy who has surely gone out there and played hurt many times during his streak.

I agree with everyone saying that it looks bad for the Giants and that they should be sitting Eli only if Webb were playing. But, he will eventually play.

Yeah. It might not be perfect but Keep Eli Starting, Cut his Practice reps considerably (I am sure after 210+ games he can cope with out them and if he sucks eh so what)., Give them and the Backup Reps to Webb (who might actually have a future as opposed to Geno). See how he responds to the Crash course and heavy workload. Attach Webb and Eli at the Hip. "On monday mornings I do this, Monday Afternoon I do this. I always check the Early Film of the opponent on Monday Nights. Tuesday I check the Early play sheet and see if there is any that I am not familiar with. Etc etc". In 2 or 3 weeks You give Webb the Keys and see what he can do.

But this situation is nuts.

There is no way Geno or Webb gives the Giants a better chance to win.

It looks like Opie got scape-goated by McAdoo .

The kind interpretation is this will the time to fairly evaluate Geno/Webb for the future..

The more cynical take, lets tank the season and lock-up the best possible shot at the Rosen/Darnold.

And the Pats lost 3 AFCCG to a guy who got benched for Brock Osweiller. It’s how it goes.

As a Pats fan this is great schadenfreude, but this is a bullshit move and even worse optically given how big of a joke McAdoo is.

No one should think this has to do with the NYG winning.

It’s protecting an asset so in offseason they can trade him (Jax). The NYG are quitting on their coach and that could get one of their only tradable assets killed.

I think this would play better if Geno Smith weren’t involved. As in, start incorporating Webb into games here and there so you can get a glimpse of what you have. And for Gods sake don’t say that you think Geno gives you the best chance to win. What an imbecile.

If the "protecting your assets argument" is true, then Webb likely won't take the field if the team has quit on the coaches and they think he will get killed by opposing teams. They'll run Geno out there as the human sacrifice.

Great argument by the way DrewDog, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Jimmy G will get his first start for the Niners on Sunday in his hometown.

So far he’s 2-2 with a td in 3 plays (the other he ran for a first down).

Eli handled that very well. Ben McAdoo is only four years older than Eli, and I'm sure each passing day makes everyone involved wonder why he is HC of the New York Football Giants.

Today, it was to be the fall guy for this, as it looks like John Mara, Steve Tisch, Chris Mara, and Jerry Reese were unavailable for comment. Eli commented that John Mara wasn't in the building today.

The NFL's declining viewership and ratings, along with the CTE issue that is looking to end this cash cow of a league, leave owners like John Mara vulnerable with their financial success tied to ownership of an NFL franchise as compared to owners that have billions before they ever decided to own an NFL franchise like Paul Allen, Stephen Ross, and Shahid Khan.

Couple more things on Eli Manning/Giants mess, after speaking to sources this afternoon/evening:

1. The Giants' plan is to give rookie Davis Webb the bulk of the remaining starts at QB this year, possibly beginning with the Week 14 game against the Cowboys. They didn't feel it was fair to throw him right into a road game at Oakland with so few practice reps, but they want to see what he's got
.

2. The plan the Giants proposed to Manning, if he wanted to keep his start streak intact, was for him to play the first halves of the remaining games and come out in the second for Smith or Webb. Manning's reaction was, "Aren't we trying to win games? If I start and we're leading at halftime, you're going to pull me?" Felt it would be phony, couldn't support the plan.

3. Manning still wants to play and believes there are several potential landing spots for next year where he could jump in and be the starter. I was told he's "been hit pretty hard by this," so it's too soon to know his plans for sure, but the feeling around the situation is that he wouldn't want his career to end like this.

Potential landing spots from where I sit:

Jacksonville: If Bortles literally throws the Jags’ season away - Obvious Coughlin connection

Denver: Team desperately needs a QB, loves their Manning’s, and has a good enough defense to get back to respectability pretty quickly

New York Jets: If Eli wants to stay in NY for family reasons. Would be a classic Jetsian move and would be hilarious to watch NY spots fans argue and melt down over this

Miami: Some talent to work with, nice weather, etc.

Steelers: If Ben retires after the season

Redskins: If Snyder somehow loses Cousins and Eli goes for the F U revenge

Arizona: If Cardinals are done with Palmer and Fox wants opportunity to torture Pats fans with why Eli likes playing in that stadium

I understand the decision to move on from Eli. The Giants have some legitimate talent on their roster and are highly unlikely to get the chance to draft this high again in the next few years. Even with some scouts souring on Darnold and Rosen, it makes sense to draft one of these guys and make the transition now if you can.

I don't think there is all that much value in playing Davis Webb for four games. He was pretty raw with fundamentals coming out of college - every scouting report basically said he had a great arm but couldn't read a defense to save his life and had no pocket presence. There is a reason he lasted until the end of the third round. So what are you likely to learn by playing him for four games surrounded by a team that has given up on the season? Enough to pass on Darnold or Rosen if you have the chance? That seems incredibly unlikely. I think its largely a convenient excuse to tank the rest of the season to ensure that they pick somewhere from 2-4 and get a shot at one of those guys.

Eli just managed 113 yards and 3 points against a mediocre Redskins team. Who was he beating down the stretch?

Eli's numbers this year are remarkably consistent with his career average and not that far off his peak, even without OBJ. He is much more likely to win them a game down the stretch than Davis Webb, who is likely to stink up the joint Nathan Peterman style (OK, maybe not that bad).
