Tournament begins today. New roof over Ashe Stadium and a new grandstand are some of the updates in Flushing Meadows. Last year of Louis Armstrong stadium as well before its torn down and a new stadium is built in its place.

My best friend is at the Open for a couple days. Says the improvements are dramatically better and looks awesome in person.
Here is the new grandstand which seats 8125 along with the roof on Ashe in the background.
Gutty win by Isner from two sets to love down, and 5-3 down in the fifth, against America's Next Big Thing (who probably won't be very big at all).

Milos Raonic ousted in the 2nd round by American Ryan Harrison in 4 sets. Looks as if Raonic was dealing with some wrist issues.
Patrick McEnroe and Mal Washington on the call on the alternate feed on WatchESPN are so much better than the gab fest on the main feed
Edit: The rotate the announcers on that feed, so YMMV. On the app, each court has its own feed, and then there's the main feed which has the main announcers covering a chosen match (which likely already has announcers in the app). Some outside courts have a feed but no announcers.

Venus is in the 3rd round. This is her record 72nd grand slam, more than anyone ever. Pretty amazing
I'm really enjoying the Radwanska-Broady match at the moment (on Eurosport in the UK) - Broady matching Radwanska shot for shot, but she doesn't quite believe she's as good as the #4 seed and keeps hitting stupid drop shots which generally get punished. Radwanska currently leading 7-6, 3-2 - on serve in the second set.
19 yr old American qualifier Jared Donaldson makes it to the 3rd round. He might have a solid chance at reaching the 4th round.
I read an article somewhere during Del Potro's amazing run in the OIympics that said despite that, there was a good chance he wouldn't get a wild card to the US Open, because that would mean taking one away from a young American and many of them count on that first round loss money as a big chunk of their income.
But in the end Del Potro did get a wild card, which did in fact bounce a young American to the qualifiers. That young American was 19 year old Jared Donaldson, who won three qualifying matches, then beat #12 Goffin in 4 sets in the first round and today took out #32 Troicki in straight sets, so now he's in the third round. He has a brutal draw, #21 Karlovic next, then potentially Nishikori and then Murray, but pretty funny how that worked out, with Del Potro and Donaldson both still in it.

FWIW, Troicki was unseeded - you couldn't be forced to play two seeds in your first two rounds. Still, great story.
On the flip side, when Djokovic finally plays someone half-decent, he won't really have played himself into form yet. So these retirements could be a double-edged sword.
Just had Pat Cash on Eurosport talking about Novak. he said much the same thing, you want matches. Since the French Open, he's had 10 matches, not including the retirements. Tsonga, Sock, Monfis and Nadal are on his side of the draw...it's probably as good a time to play him as there's been in a few years.
The other side of it is his wrist is healing. So is it more good or bad these retirements? The dude is superfit, niether of his last two opponents had the game to trouble him too much anyway. But some of these other guys with more to their games...it's got to put a bit more lead in the pencil.

Dan Evans playing the match of his life, up two sets to one and a break in the 4th against Wawrinka. Between Murray, Evans and Edmund on the men's side and Konta (plus Broady) on the women's side, this might be the best British showing at a slam in the modern era.

So Evans had a match point in the fourth set tiebreaker, then should have had another but failed to put two easy overheads away; Wawrinka won the breaker 10-8 and then cruised to victory 6-2 in the fifth, but that was some match.
This storm is supposed to bring crazy winds with it, in the 40 MPH range, and sit off the coast of NYC for maybe 3-4 days without raining much, starting tomorrow. If that goes as forecast, good luck to the players trying to play through it.
I'm taking my daughter Wednesday for the day session. She is a big Wawrinka fan, so I hope he's still in it. I've never been before, and I think I'd normally take the train/No. 7, but she has a bit of a train phobia so I might end up driving. Any suggestions regarding parking? We're coming from Connecticut.
Tsonga retires after two sets, Djokovic on to the semis. Third player to retire or walkover against Djokovic. He's played 9 1/2 sets in 5 rounds.
Should be two great matches tonight, Serena vs the Halepeño and Wawrinka-Del Potro. Playing Delpo the last few months has been like drawing the (unseeded) Williams sisters in doubles - it's such a mis-evaluation of their talent that top players who encounter them can rightly feel hard done by. At least it's a QF, but Steve Johnson and Ferrer got a little screwed. In any case, Delpo is playing like a top-5 player and gave Murray a hell of a Gold Medal match a month ago, so I imagine he'll be in the top 10 by January or February at this rate, as long as he stays healthy. Which I hope he does, because his game is a lot of fun to watch.
Murray breaks Nishikori twice in the 3rd set and both times, Nishikori immediately comes right back and breaks him. At 4-4, Murray breaks him a third time, and then holds at love to take the 3rd. Starting the 4th now, but definitely one of the best matches I can recall Nishikori playing - obviously behind his 2014 US Open run, beating Wawrinka in the QF and then Djokovic in the semis, but he looks similarly on fire. Him playing Murray means you've got two of the best runners and defenders here, so tons of break chances and great shotmaking.
This is a crazy match. That weird gong sound happened Monday too, in the middle of Konjuh's serve. It's really embarassing for the tournament to have a technical malfunction like that, even moreso to have not solved it two days ago.
