After his defense has been fully exposed and how his offense wasn't utilized in Cleveland's system, why do the C's want Love at $20M per?

I guess I'm not seeing what he brings to what the Celtics do

The only answers require a bunch of if-and-maybe wish-casting.

If he's healthy...
If the cost is low enough....
If we return him to his Minny role...
If Stevens can hide his defense...
If he can draw other talent to Boston...

It's too much. I'd love to add a star player, but he isn't the one anymore.

According to Lowe, his work during the Finals was at least league-average, if not a smidge better. I trust Lowe's judgment on this more than I trust my own.

He brings offense. He creates gravity and space on the offensive side of the ball that only IT commands on the Cs right now. As a co-pilot (rather than third fiddle he is right now), his numbers should rebound. Speaking of rebounds, he can rebound, which isn't nothing if the Cs do let Sully go. Speaking of Sully, he can shoot 3s much better.

Defensively, he is a liability, but as far as I understand it (and who knows what I really know) Cleveland's defensive schemes are not nearly as good as the Celtics'. A good example is Olynyk, who was able to look halfway-decent in Cs schemes. In addition, I believe his offense is worth his defense provided that Ainge doesn't clear the defensive cupboard.

Finally, there's the health. In the absence of real info on this front, I'm assuming he can return to health.

What that means - for me - is: Acquiring Love means Crowder and one of AB and Smart cannot be moved. If a Butler or Middleton type is also acquired, then Crowder or one of the guards can be moved as well.

Olynyk looks capable because he has very good lateral agility for his size. The same cannot be said of Love.

The argument that can be made for Love is this:
He brings a versatile offensive game, he can stretch the floor or work the paint
He's somewhere between a good and great rebounder.
He's shown that while he's not a good defender, he can often be hidden if you have good defenders around him.
His contract is actually a bargain compared to what lesser players are going to get in FA.

Love is still a really good player, he's just a terrible fit for CLE. He's a 3rd option there which limits how much his offense helps, and in reality Lebron should be playing more PF.
If the price was right I'd be interested in Love, he would provide a lot of scoring punch while also helping our anemic rebounding. I feel confident that he could be hidden in the system for the most part on D, which MIN did a nice job of when he was there. He won't be a good defender like Olynyk is, but he can be decent enough, as he has in the past to be worth it given his offense. He's not a good defender, but neither is he Kanter/Okafor poor.

Don't forget culture. Love is a weirdo (by some accounts) and is probably a better temperament fit on a team of misfits. He's not classy-big-3 material.

Any concerns about Love's scoring? He was gobbled up quite a bit when trying to score in the post and he doesn't project to age very well. The Celtics aren't close enough to a title for me to be interested in Love. I think he really tails off in 2-3 years.

Love lost his low-post scoring ability over 3 years ago and it no longer is even a part of his game that has nothing to do with system. I keep hearing people talk about him returning to the player he was in Minnesota but that isn't happening because that player changed before he even left Minnesota.

The backend of Love's career to me projects similar to Raef LaFrentz who also lost his lift and explosiveness following injuries in his late 20's.

If true, rule out Thon Maker to the Celtics:

Jake Fischer ‏@JakeLFischer 3m3 minutes ago

Several teams have entirely ruled Thon Maker out of the first round due to his age. Multiple sources believe Maker to be 21-23, not 19.
There are similar rumors about Zhou Qi as well. I wonder if teams wanting them to fall are spreading them.

Of course, the Celtics do have five second round picks.

@WojVerticalNBA: Sources: Several Western teams aggressive on Thad Young, whom Brooklyn's working to move to highest bidder. This gets Nets into first-round.

Not sure where to put this, but Karl Anthony Towns is gonna be an awesome TV guy one day. Him and Calipari are on Mike and Mike (yea I know but the other stations were in commercial I swear). Their stories are great anyway, but KAT is killing it. I could listen to him talk NBA all day. What an amazing young talent.

The Nets are also working hard to bring Jan Vesely back to the NBA as Thad's replacement. We are in such a sweet position these next two drafts to come away with a #1 pick.

not sure which thread to post it so I will here. Chad Ford.

Ainge's refusal to tip his hand essentially forces teams to deal with him if they want to be guaranteed to land their favorite player in the draft. It's brilliant.
and

The best offer they've received? The Sixers are willing to part with Jahlil Okafor for the No. 3 pick. While interested in Okafor, the Celtics want more.

I decided to fully mock only the first round as there are too many foreign players down in the mid-late 2nd projections that I'm not familiar with at all. This is my mock board and not a prediction of where a player will go although in some cases it could be both. I was going to use DeJounte Murray as an example of someone who I've seen mocked as low as the 40's who I've always had in my lottery however it now seems to be the trendy thing to move him up.

I will include at the bottom of the first round some comments pertaining to certain players whose appearance in other mocks are substantially different than mine. No need to do an entire second round when few if any are interested as to why I have Ben Bentil 38th rather than 35th, etc. Boring.

1. Brandon Ingram - Pure NBA game in every aspect. Long with good timing defensively, knock down shooter with excellent mechanics and high release point translates ideally to end of clock iso's. He'll gain 20 lbs or so over the next couple years which will serve him well in upside.

2. Kris Dunn - Another natural NBA player who was hampered by the college zones able to extend multiple defenders out 25-30 feet. He tightened his handle and greatly improved his 3-point shooting. Finishing in traffic is another area where he can still grow. Lockdown defender and elite athlete who excels in pick-n-roll. Kid is made for this league.

3. Ben Simmons - Excellent versatile player who like Dunn was forced to play down to his teammates last year. Will be forced to learn how to play without the ball in his hands as much which could be an adjustment. A little something seems missing, maybe his motor, which is why I don't have him higher but this has always seemed like a 3-man draft to me then a huge drop off.

4. Jaylen Brown
- Much like Simmons he played in a dysfunctional system with no spacing, no ball handlers, and as a freshman asked to do more under trying circumstances. His athleticism and explosiveness off the dribble gives him the upside to develop savvy for the game and a reliable perimeter shot.

5. Jakob Poeltl - As NBA-ready as Dunn at a critical position of need in this league. Great footwork for his size and just a solid all around active big. Like Dunn, the college zone didn't allow him to show all of his versatility. He's Steven Adams+

6. Jamal Murray
- Natural scorer whose floor is a Jamal Crawford-type as a 6th man in a combo guard role. Should have no problem putting points up once he matures but the combo/2 position is very deep right now and he could get lost in the shuffle to break out of that large group.

7. Skal Labissiere
- I could have gone with other safer plays here but like Jaylen at 4 when it is close I'm always going to go with the guy who has massive upside. Great length, with a body that should fill out makes his projection to high to pass up should be develop his ball skills.

8. Dragan Bender - Seems to have good understanding of the game, passing ability, awareness, etc to play much sooner than some think. Too mechanical facing the basket with the ball to be more than a spot-up 3-point shooter and his strengths I list above should serve him well in quickly finding a 2nd unit role. Safe high floor pick here as a 2nd or 3rd big which at a critical position is good value.

9. Buddy Hield
- Another high floor player who possesses one elite NBA skill which like Poeltl makes him a low-bust candidate. JJ Redick-type who only needs to lands the right situation to find his niche in the league.

10. Dejounte Murray - Super active high energy combo-2. Love his instincts, length for position, smooth and fluid athleticism, and passing ability despite a need to get much stronger. He is ideal for an open court Western Conference team that can afford to wait 2-3 years for him to contribute. He will gain the weight but if he also develops a reliable jumper look out!

11. Marquese Chriss
- In Feb/Mar he was my sleeper to sneak into the lottery on a flyer if he came out. At some point people became enamored with his freakish athleticism AFTER the season ended and he shot up the mocks. I don't really believe this to be accurate and I expect him to fall down to this range where he never exceeded to begin with.

12. Wade Baldwin - Prototypical 3-and-D guard who has the ability to be a great compliment to a high scoring backcourt counterpart with his freakish length defensively and excellent spot-up shooting. Not much in way of creativity but a safe play with a floor as a rotation guard.

13. Malik Beasley – Natural NBA 2-guard who has advanced understanding of how to create shots and score. Very productive as a 19-year old freshman in an older league, isn’t afraid of anyone with confidence that he’s best player on the floor.

14a/14b. Ante Zizic/Ivica Zubac - Two young and big Adriatic League 5's with different skill sets. Haven't seen enough to place one ahead of the other but if they were twin brothers I'd compare their games to the Lopez twins. Zubac the softer smoother player like Brook and Zizic the active grinder like Robin. Overseas bigs have had an exceptional success rate in the league as opposed to wings which is why these two are graded much higher than the other foreigners mocks have higher.

16. Domantas Sabonis - One of the most polarizing players in the draft to me as I can go either way on his skillset translating. I could have placed him in the Top-10 while just as easily had him in the 20's.

17. Malachi Richardson – Ideal size/length for his position and despite college system restrictions showed me his potential as a shot creator. Savvy with his first step and seems to have a good understanding of what he wants to do when he is in a scoring position.

18. Taurean Prince – Flying under the radar here and I considered him as high as 12. Prototypical stretch-4 who is physically ready to play immediately. Will need the right system to find his niche but I have trouble seeing Prince not having a long and productive career in the right situation.

19. Isaiah Whitehead – NBA style combo-2 with good size/length who excels in pick-n-roll and an advantaged understanding of how to score the ball. Another guy who was restricted by the college defensive rules and took a major leap in his second college season.

20. Pascal Siakam – Older player but one who made huge gains in two seasons since taking up the game late. He just produces. Great size for position and excellent motor who never learned how to play the game at less than full speed.

21. Timothe Luwawu – Never a fan of foreign wings this kid possesses more of an American type game so he gets into the mix here.

22. Brice Johnson – I’ve come around on this player. Could be a nice 2nd unit energy guy to best utilize his motor and length. His upside is limited however there is an opportunity to expand his game by developing a face-up jumper/3-point shot over time.

23. Caris LeVert – I’m assuming that I have his medicals and his foot checked out. If so, he is a bargain this low. Without injury problem he is a low lottery pick as an Evan Turner-like player who has a good understanding of how to best utilize his skillset as a combo wing.

24. Henry Ellenson – Productive player with great size for his positon and the ability to develop into a stretch-4 with improved consistency shooting the ball. He needs to play with more of a chip on his shoulder but even though the kid does put up numbers. Could get lost in a less than ideal situation but down here a winning and better structured organization would serve him very well.

25. Furkan Korkmaz – Very young draft and stash guy. Downgraded due to foreign wing history but his skillset is worth the future value here.

26. Chinanu Okuaku – Similar to Siakam, he only knows one speed and as he matures should be able to better harness his aggressiveness to play more under control. I see him as a physical rotation big who will provide a physical presence in the paint. Still very young and he’s come a long way over the past 18 months which bodes well for future improvement in understanding the game.

27. Malcolm Brogdon – Undervalued in mocks. Has potential to be lockdown defender of high scoring wings and a prototypical 3-and-D guy. Physically and mentally mature with a tremendous understanding of the halfcourt game, angles, switches, etc. Could get lost in a bad situation but skillset is an asset on a more structured and winning team with roles defined.

28. Deyonta Davis – Great physicals for his position and appeared smooth and agile for a player his size. Has a long way to go to make an impact at the next level as he still appeared lost and clueless late in the season when he should have been figuring things out. Long term project who doesn’t have high enough upside to absorb his high bust risk to place him higher.

29. DeAndre Bembry – Old school versatile wing who does a lot of things well and nothing which stands out. If he can develop a consistent 3-point shot I can envision him as a Jared Dudley-type. Team-oriented guy who unlike many young players won’t be a disruption as an 11-12th man early on. That’s enough upside for him to slide into my first round.

30. Patrick McCaw – Great size for position as a combo-2 and has game that should translate to the NBA once he gains some strength and develops a consistent perimeter shot.

· Others considered in the late first round: Robert Carter, Juan Hernangomez, Kahlil Felder, Petr Cornelie, Damian Jones, and Stephen Zimmerman.

· I’ve always held the long standing belief that to draft a PG in the 1st round the player must project as your starting 1. For me this eliminates Felder (who I love as a guy to make it), Demetruis Jackson, and Tyler Ulis.

· Not a fan of Denzel Valentine, Chieck Diallo or Thon Maker (I don’t see the upside in Diallo or Maker that others do for variety of reasons).

Biggest surprises for me here are Skal so high and Deyonta Davis so low. I can't think of a guy who showed as little as Skal did in college ever becoming a good NBA player. Basically, blocking shots was the only thing he did at all, and Davis did it at nearly the same rate, while doing pretty much everything else better, and having 3 inches on his standing reach and 30 pounds on him. I've read the reports from practice of Skal showing off a nice handle and beautiful stroke for a big guy, but he hasn't even shown glimpses in a game like Chriss has. Like Chriss, I guess you'd buy into his size, agility and potential jump shot, and hope his cluelessness stems in part from his late start playing ball, but to me he has more bust potential than anyone in your top 30.

Good stuff, finally!

Teams can only receive and send out in the calendar year a max of $3.4m. Celtics have received $3.1m from the P. Jones and Z. Dragic trade.

  2. Bobby Marks ‏@BobbyMarks42 3h3 hours ago
Boston will face a challenge if they wish to unload their 2nd rd. picks for cash. Prior trades limit the Celtics to receive a max of $300k.

With all that Danny has on his table I hope he has another group of people focused on shipping out some of those 2nd round picks. And not for cash, even if they can't take on much cash. Cash is the white flag in this situation, take any draft and stash before accepting cash.

There are ALWAYS GM's looking to get into the 2nd round by moving future picks that won't even matter if they don't improve the team as they will no longer have a job. If Ainge wants to push picks to the future he won't have any trouble.
