The only thing that makes sense is he needed a little more warm up time for the pen.
right, and they showed that no one was warming up until Rizzo HR'd.

it's just terrible managing. you have to play for tomorrow too in this situation. if your lesser guys can't handle finishing this off, then so be it.

Many people in this board would have liked to have Maddon as the Sox manager. That liat just got shorter and shorter.

I can understand that Strop wasn't ready, but why the hell not have someone warming to start the 8th? Chapman may have been hurt and is coming off that lng outing...

That's two great plays by Heyward. Not competely dead weight.

Joe West reversed two calls in favor of the Sox, in Yankee Stadium, before instant replay existed.

Whatever he does and will do is forgiven.

I don't fault Maddon for bringing in Chapman with two on in the seventh. Leaving him in after that? Well, not ideal but who knows how much an extra 15-20 pitches or whatever it was really matter at that point.

Edit: Interestingly I guess -- he ended up only throwing 20 pitches total. It seemed like more.

Joe West is an epic piece of shit. Retire.
This is really accurate. He makes it about himself, in Game 6 of the World Series. People stare at you Joe because you absolutely suck at your job. They aren't showing you up, you're showing them up. Ye Gods, how is he behind the plate in such a game?

Ha. Maddon had Chapman in this game? Yea, I really don't want to hear about this dude being worth 10+ games over the course of a season. He's just the product of internet hype. He literally did the thing Farrell gets killed for around here: playing your good pitchers when you're up big.

I had no problem with bringing in Chapman for the last out of the seventh in a high leverage situation.

The usage after that borders on malpractice. Especially the stupidity of talking several minutes to decide to get your pen up after Rizzo's bomb.

Thankfully, Maddon is getting a lot of heat for it. If it comes back to bite them tonight, I think it'll be a big part of how this series is remembered.

I don't think that's true. The media loves Maddon and the broadcast team kept insisting that if you bring in Chapman, you have to ride him to the finish. (Which is moronic, but there you have it.)

The ready-made excuse is that you have to get to game 7 to win it, and I think that inoculates Maddon to a certain extent. If anything, this might help the legend of Maddon's "willingness to make unconventional moves" grow.

I think that was more so because you don't have Chapman there if things blow up after he came out. I don't think Smoltz thought it was a great idea for him to come in so early but felt you had to ride him once in until they were up 7.

Right, that's the reason I don't think the media will kill him. It's also the part that I find to be mind-numbingly moronic.

Bringing Chapman in to get the last out of the 7th was a perfect use because it was the highest leverage situation in the game. Keeping him in after that was a tremendous mistake, but because conventional wisdom supports it, the media won't crush him for it no matter how much he deserves it.

FWIW, I definitely saw a few tweets last night from major baseball media types questioning and/or skewering Maddon for his usage of Chapman last night. If this blows up in his face and the Cubs lose tonight, Maddon will definitely start feeling heat from some quarters.

I thought Maddon did everything right with Chapman until he didn't immediately get someone up in the bullpen after Rizzo's HR. That HR was exactly what you hope for when the move gets made, a bigger cushion allows you to not have to get him up a third time.

In the 7th with Lindor up and 2 on, you're one swing from it being 7-5. In an elimination game you have gotta go to Chapman there. Then, with more outs to go than runs ahead, Chapman has to pitch the 8th. But a 7 run lead with 3 outs to get is when you go to your backup closer. That's where Maddon lost me.
