Its a tire fire of epic proportions

Read the whole thing... I think the thread needs a title change
That is a beautiful clusterfuck.

We already knew the Bills organization was dysfunctional...they're the fucktards who hired Rex in the first place. Today's disastrous presser was merely conformation of that fact.

Yeah, I'd never want to work for those owners. I'm glad they are in the AFC East.

I still contend it happened in SB 49 after Amendola's 4th quarter TD and the refs missed it.

Edit - Nevermind, that was clearly out of bounds.
My recollection is that the Seahawks kept letting the ball bounce around the end zone on kickoffs and I was waiting for a Pats recovery.

Pegula speaks:

http://pro32.ap.org/article/apnewsbreak-bills-owner-outlines-reasons-he-fired-rex-ryan

Sounds like Pegula was going to evaluate at the end of the season, but Rex flat out asked him if he was staying or going, and so a decision was made at that point.
LOL, that article contains the gem that they're going to interview Panthers DC Sean McDermott. I think McDermott is a really good DC - that Carolina D was a thing of beauty in 2015 - but he could not run a more different defense than Rex. Yeah, great idea - let's spend two seasons going down the 3-4, 1-high, multiple front, man-heavy D and then put in a 4-3, 2-high, execution-based, zone-heavy scheme and have to throw out half our players. Second round pick Reggie Ragland? Well, he doesn't fit any more.

McDermott might not get the job, but the fact that they're even considering him shows they don't have any plan or vision for what they want to be. What a joke.

That transcript is something else.
If Whaley could have just used "the organization" as the subject of a few of those sentences he'd have been a lot better off. He's either very very bad at dealing with the press or expressing his dissatisfaction in public. Either recommends his termination by even very bad management.

No kidding - what an awkward press conference that must have been. Wish those Bills reporters could grill Goodell on something. They came prepared with their knives sharpened.

Okay, like the Bills, I may be having a brain-freeze of my own.
Yes. You are.

Punts are live only if touched by receiving team. Kickoffs are live after 10 yards, but cannot be advanced unless touched by receiving team. The "batting away from end zone" you're referring to is on punts.

It seems odd to me that anyone that's watched football for more than 2 days confuses punts and kickoffs and teams trying to down punts at the 1 yard line.

Holy shit, those are some awesome questions.

Edit: After reading the rest of the transcript, it seems like the reporters were pissed off about not being able to speak to Whaley through the year, and only receiving a release from ownership regarding the Rex firing.

Wow - I never thought I'd find myself feeling sympathetic towards Rex Ryan, but the Pegulas and Whaley are a complete joke.

If my math is correct, Pegula has paid more in head coaching salaries over the past two years than Bob Kraft has paid Bill Belichick. Given that Buffalo is on the hook to pay Ryan $15 million over the next three seasons, that trend is likely to continue.

No, it's not odd. It's just me. "Brain freeze" is severely understating it. I've been watching football as a semi-casual fan for a while (with only half a brain, obviously), and I'm embarrassed to say I wasn't aware of the different rules for receiving/recovering kicks and punts. Thanks to all posters who set me straight.

Wait until you realize they measure the length of field goals from where the ball is kicked, but the length of punts from the line of scrimmage

This is not true, kicks cannot be advanced by the kicking team no matter what. They can only be recovered.

On the surface it seems odd to have punts and fgs measured differently but the more I think about it the more it sorta makes sense. Punts are a change of possession to the other team so a 50 yd punt can be easily measured from the line of scrimmage to where the receiving team starts its set of downs.

We're both right and wrong.

It has to be "possessed" by receiving team, not just touched.

Well right, once the ball is possessed the kick has ended and all kicking rules and enforcements no longer apply. It just becomes a running play.

They can be advanced if the receiving team takes possession and then fumbles. Not a muff, but a fumble.
Someone post that GIF of the Butt Fumble game where the Pats run one in off a kickoff.

I also recall that in the 86 Super Bowl run, the Pats scored a TD, maybe against Miami, on a kickoff return fumble that was run into the end zone.

Granted.

But let's not confuse the other poster any more. :)

Apparently Rex said "do it now" over Tyrod Taylor.

“So Ryan, who for a few weeks had been hearing reports of his impending firing, asked to speak to Pegula one-on-one. Ryan had made a promise to Taylor, telling him that he’d be the Bills starting quarterback as long as Ryan was the coach. Ryan didn’t want to break his word, and he was worried how the team would respond. If you are already planning on firing me next Monday, Ryan told Pegula, then you might as well fire me now.

“So Pegula did.”

Source: Sean McDermott agrees to contract to be head coach of the Bills.
This is crazy. He runs a completely different scheme than Rex. How many times are the Bills going to completely switch gears?

Look at their second-round pick last year: Reggie Ragland, a 260-pound thumper. Now look at the LBs McDermott had in Carolina: 240-pounders Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly, who have insane range. So they probably will end up trading Ragland for 30 cents on the dollar. They can never get any continuity up there.

Listening to SiriusXM NFL Network this morning and heard Vic Carruci's insight into the McDermott hire. Carucci, who has covered the Bills for years and has great access to the organization, said the single factor that contributed most to Pegula's decision was McDermott being a two time high school wrestling champion. Carucci said that Pegula brought it up numerous times during their recent talk, each time explaining how difficult that achievement is and how it exemplifies discipline, passion and high character.

My twin brother was a state champ wrestler. It's a great accomplishment but he can't even take the '85 Bears to the Madden Bowl. You can't make this shit up.
