I wonder (and wanted to ask in an earlier match already) why it is allowed for the organization to play slow-motion in the stadiums. Usually this is forbidden i think. At least in Bundesliga this is not allowed and in FIFA matches, too, as this would show refs up in many occasions.

My feeling for this match is if we advance, it would be in extra-time. It has to finally arrive again, that we lose penalty kicks. So if this doesn´t end after 120mins, i think the French will advance.

I am trying to recall a Women's soccer match I have watched live that was better than this one. I want no part of either of these teams, even with the extra(hopefully) 30 minutes of play.

Wow, this game is a diving clinic.

JA - I agree, France has looked like the class of the tournament.

And yet, France lost to Colombia.

Yeah, not hard to imagine this shoot out might be the de facto championship when all is said and done.

Fair Play at WWC with fans showering boos for every German at the penalty kicks...

Both teams deserved to advance and played a great game with each team had phases where they dominated. I would say Germany had a little bit more of the match/possession, but France played faster through the midfield with great technical ability and fast attacks. They created dangerous situations, but were a little flat in the 2nd half. If they had more firepower and a finisher for counterattacks in the 2nd half, this could have ended earlier.

It´s still ridiculous that a) Germany plays Sweden-France and USA plays Colombia-China and b) the ref of that match was from Canada. Such scenarios would never happen at a men´s WC. OBviously, you have more refs from countries that aren´t even at the WC and better quality at all. But why not have refs from Italy, Spain, Norway ref this match? Teams that are out of it? Some yellows were soft, I think.

So looking at the USWNT starting XI, do we think Ellis is switching to a 5-3-2, or is she playing a RB in the midfield ahead of her actual midfielders?

Per the ESPN 538.com ratings, should the US win, Germany would be a 55.6% favorite in the semis.

I have no fucking idea. At all. It makes no sense.

So, it seems like China's defense gives all that room on the flank. Wouldn't that mean that crosses should be flying in all night? And no Wambach?

Think China would be happy if we tried to launch crosses to a triple-teamed Wambach all night.

I guess, but, with all that room to get them in there, she'd only need to get on the end of one.

It's just a weird defense, so I guess I just have to see how it looks in action.

She's going to play a 4-4-2 and look to hoof the ball up to Wambach.

Yeah, four CBs playing tightly means few angles for headers and probably some very deep playing wide midfielders to hamper crosses. No Wambach is the correct call both based on form and opponent tactics.

Rodriguez instead of LeRoux is perplexing though, and I have no idea what they are doing in midfield.

Rodriguez is better at holding up the ball than LeRoux. It's among the big roster weaknesses, we have a million speedy strikers, and nobody but Wambach who can hold up the ball. Made even worse by the lack of a real #10.

Took the wife and three daughters to the game today in Montreal.

That's about as good of a woman's soccer game as I have seen. Crowd was roaring the entire time right up until that last save, when it got very quiet. (Except for the handful of Germany fans.)

Exhausted but heading to a bar to watch the USA.

Those ratings don't seem too accurate, they had Germany as a 72 percent favorite in today's game which was an obvious tossup in reality, and they seem to wildly overrate the US based on their play so far.

Pretty sure 538 doesn't have anywhere near enough data for their model.

The skill in the US backfield is insane.

This might just be because I am a Spurs fan and have watched a ton of shitty defense lately, but I am ridiculously confident in this back four.

And this is the first time in the tournament that Carli Lloyd has looked like the player I remember; strong, confident, creative. It took her too long to get over Sundhage's comments but if she's gonna be this engaged and active, it's a good thing for the US team.
