Risk / reward is part of it. I think the other thing is that teams can leverage changing non-guaranteed money to guaranteed money to clear cap space. Under the terms of the contract Brady signed in 2010, he was supposed to have a cap figure of $18.2 MM this year. They renegotiated in 2013, guaranteeing him $46 MM over the next five seasons, but lowering his cap figures over those years to between 13 - 15 MM. That's typical; teams clear cap space by renegotiating with the QB (usually the highest-paid player): the team gets short-term cap space, and the player gets more guarantees. If Wilson's deal is all guaranteed, the team effectively is shooting their bullets up front; it's not going to be as straight-forward to clear cap space later (if it's even legal) by modifying the contract.

(all numbers from http://patscap.com/brady.html#brady)

Presumably you could turn guaranteed salary into signing/roster bonuses--for example if he's guaranteed 16 million in 2016 you might still be able to convert some of that guaranty into a bonus at the beginning of the year, pay Wilson most of the money in a bonus rather than in 16 game checks, and pro rate the bonus over the remainder of the contract.

The big upside for a team is you save money, the downside is you end up with a player you can't cut.  Is a 32 year old Russell Wilson in 2020 going to be worth $x million? Hard to say right now.

Anyone have an opinion on what is the best Seahawks message board? I would never post but interested to see fans thoughts on team building etc with lynch and Wilson etc.

I've read Seahawks.net but there's a lot of junk on there as well. A number of good posters but a lot of bandwagon.

There's a good reason that most of us stick through some of the fun of being here rather than going over there for football discussion and you just summarized it in one succinct post.

All of the boards I have found really kinda suck.  The only Seahawks-centric site I read is Field Gulls (part of SB Nation).  They've got some great quality writers there.

I went over there for a bit. What I saw was good writers like you said, and some still all over Bevell for the call in more than one thread. Fire him!

Golden Tate on the playcall and banging Russell Wilson's wife.  Also, Golden Tate leaving a bar with 3 attractive women.

Jeremy Lane didn't just break his arm on the INT return, he tore his ACL, per Bob Condotta. Insane.

Hasn't been repaired yet. Unless he has Adrian Peterson's healing abilities, he'll miss at least part of next season recovering from the ACL tear. Pretty big loss.

Wait, where was Golden Tate in the video and what did he say?  All I could see was grey shirt.

Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas will have surgery Tuesday to repair the torn labrum in his left shoulder, potentially jeopardizing his availability for the early part of the NFL season, Ed Werder of ESPN reports.

Thomas suffered the injury, which caused his left shoulder to dislocate, while trying to tackle Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb in the NFC Championship Game. Thomas later returned to the game wearing a shoulder harness, which he also wore as a starter in the Seahawks' loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.

The typical rehabilitation for this type of surgery is six to eight months, and that jeopardizes Thomas' participation for training camp and availability for the early part of the NFL season.

Per Mike Florio, Marshawn Lynch given a new 3 year deal replacing the last year of his old deal:

2015 - $7.5M signing bonus, $4.5M base salary ($7M against the cap)
2016 - $9M base salary ($11.5M against the cap)
2017 - $3M roster bonus (due on 5th day of league year), $7M base salary ($12.5M against the cap)

We'll see if he plays this contract out too.  I like the low first year in terms of cap impact to be able to get some more players and there is some impact on the cap the next two years, but we'll see if he retires or not as he has been threatening.

I'll comment more on the FA signings when they become official so someone doesn't pull a Gore.

They did re-sign TE Anthony McCoy to a 1-year deal after he missed virtually all of the last two years with tears of both Achilles.

They also re-signed ST Mike Morgan to a 1-year deal as well.

And they cut TE Zach Miller, who missed 13 games last year and was going to cost $3.4M against the cap.  They do end up with $1M in dead money, so it's a $2.4M cap savings.

Nope.  Seattle has been very good at finding value in the later rounds and havent needed a first round pick.  That and they've been to two Super Bowls in the last two years which earns PC and JS a ton of trust

I would have expected they were going to trade down anyway.  Hopefully turning it into a top notch talent works out better this time.

They've done a great job with that, for sure. I'm dubious that you can count on that going forward. Graham fills a need, but he's making $9 MM / year - your first round pick would make that over the four years of his rookie contract. Wilson's going to get paid soon and skipping out on first-rounders for three years is going to make it tougher to fill in the pieces around him.

Seahawks might convert Jimmy Graham's $5M 3rd day of 2015 league year roster bonus (3/12) into signing bonus to lower cap hit by $3,333,334.

"It's been a tough couple days, no question," said Unger. "At the same time, I'm going to look back at the time I got to spend here and live here and play football for the 'Hawks as some of the best. It is nice to be wanted, though. I've got a great opportunity to go play for an awesome organization with some pretty talented players. You've just got to kind of stay positive with it. This is something that's part of the business."

Just bizarre. Who wants to go from a team that's gone 25-7 over the past two seasons (30-8 counting playoffs) to one that's gone 10-22? His Wiki says he's from Louisiana, went to high school in Houston and college at Texas A&M. Why Atlanta?

Atlanta has Dan Quinn, sure, but this has to be about more money, no? He might have been the best player on the field in the Super Bowl and is probably underpaid despite just being one year into a new deal. I can't imagine trading for Jimmy Graham has anything to do with it.

Trading Bennett sticks Seattle with $6M in dead money and only a $2M cap savings.  Not sure what Seattle can get back to make that hit worth it

There's no reason to trade him on that contract. It's a good deal for Seattle and Bennett's making enough that he's not going to hold out and lose guaranteed money. Let him have his moment of sadness, he'll be there.

Announcing ahead of time which team you want to play for is not a good way of making more money.

I have a theory that the reason Russell Wilson's deal has yet to be completed is because the team wants to put in language barring him from playing baseball. It would make sense as to why him suddenly playing both sports is in the news.

I have nothing to base this on, but just spitballing. Seems strange they've yet to nail down an agreement.

Wilson was #1 in merch sales again this year.

Not exactly huge news, but with this dead spot in the offseason, it sure beats re-hashing that fucking play again.

Five primetime games, which is apparently the most in franchise history. Only one is Two are at home, though, which kind of sucks.

The Week 2 game at Green Bay could conceivably decide home field advantage in the NFC.

I also don't like two road games to open the season, but then I remember the Seahawks traded for Jimmy Graham.

Edit: I can't count.

The good thing is the one East Coast road game (at Baltimore) is a night game, so they do escape that problem.  The only other 1 PM ET game I see that could be an issue is at Cincinnati.  So I think they dodged a bullet there.

I also like that 5 or the first 8 are on the road, giving them 5 of 8 at home down the stretch.  And their bye is in week 9 instead of the shitty week 4 bye they had last year.

Latest rumor is Bruce Irvin to Atlanta because the Hawks don't want to pick up his 5th year option at $7.8M which makes a hell of a lot of sense for a guy who they really don't know what to do with.  With Avril entrenched as LEO, Irvin is kind of miscast as a SLB.  And they could use the money to extend Bobby Wagner.  I'm sure they can find a plug and play guy to play 1st and 2nd down for peanuts compared to that price.

I wouldn't mind getting a 3 or 4 for him, but it's probably not going to be that good.  Although the Eagles are allegedly holding out for a 2 for Mychal Kendricks, also in his last year of his contract.
