Interesting inactives this week:

CB Fletcher - just a matchup thing, or is he maybe on the way out?
S Wilson - A healthy scratch. Has never done much on D but has been a big ST contributor - maybe now not even that?
CB Brown - started the first two games, was active but never saw the field. Is that a verdict on his early-season play? Have Ryan and Coleman really passed him?
RB Cadet - active last week over White, this week White got the nod
TE Hoomanawnui - I've never been totally clear what he brings to the team; could he be cut at some point?

You have to figure that with Brown it's a health thing, right? For Fletcher, Cadet and Hooman, I think it's just a matter of there being other guys on the roster who do more (now that White has gotten his feet wet). Wilson, I don't know - I'm not deep enough in ST to know whether anyone is especially good/bad, aside from Slater, who reminded us again today that he's really, really good!

There were some rumors about Brown's health but he wasn't on the injury report at all. I would think if he tweaked something late they would have just deactivated him and activated Fletcher.

Maybe they hoped to avoid him but dressed him just in case? Agreed it's sort of odd. Just happy right now they are making like six inactive decisions a week, usually by week four it's six injured guys and like one healthy scratch

It seems likely (though BB would never say as much) that they treated today's game a bit like a scrimmage.  They wanted to see what Coleman, Richards, and White could do in game situations.  Great way to get their feet wet without risking much, given Jacksonville's limitations.  Given how all three played, we may see them again next week.  That said, I suspect Brown starts again and Coleman is the back-up.  Brown looked solid to the naked eye in the first two weeks.

I know we genuflect at Belichick a bunch on these boards, but this strikes me as another way he is two steps ahead of the rest of the league.

There might be something to this.

BB:

The Patriots and their coaches usually have at least six or seven games of film under their belt to break down and use for self-scouting in years past. This year, they have just three games of film to break down.

“The self-scouting is on somewhat of an abbreviated basis,” Belichick said. “It will be the best we can do; we just don’t have as much information as we would if our bye was in Week 10 or 11 or something like that. But it isn’t, so we’ll take what we have and look at that and just do the best we can. You can’t control any of these situations, so whatever the opportunity is, you just try to make the most of it and try to take advantage of whatever time or opportunity that’s presented to you and figure out what’s the best thing you can do with it. There is really not a lot of thought about, ‘Well if it was some other time it’d be this or that.’ It isn’t, so there is no point in wasting time on that. Just take it for what it is and try to make the most out of it.

Getting an extended look at Coleman, Shaq Mason in the FB role, Mike Williams, Richards, whoever was taking Wilson's place on STs, etc. might give them more film to determine if they need to bring in another FB, CB, etc.

There was a rumor somewhere(I believe yesterday during the game) that Brown was seen icing his legs on the sidelines at the end of the Buffalo game.  Maybe there was some lingering soreness and he was to be available in an emergency role only.  That made the Fletcher inactive choice that much more interesting.  I think by November Fletcher will get cut.

This is what Reiss said

Tarell Brown was active but was the only Patriots player not to play a snap. I don’t view this as anything more than a rotation/managing health type situation. Brown was obviously healthy enough to contribute because he was active, but he also seemed to be working through something leg-related on Sept. 20 against the Bills.

How far Ball has fallen.

The Montee Ball problem: If there are running backs behind 3 doors and you open one of them and it's Montee Ball, should you switch to get a chance at a better back?

Odds are you shouldn't make that deal.

If you open the door, it doesn't matter.  If John Elway opens that door, you should switch to any running back on a practice squad.

Wait, what? The Monty Hall paradox is such that you *do* make the deal, even though your intuition implies that the odds are the same.

But that is because Monty Hall opened the door, knowing that the prize wouldn't be there.  If you open a random door, the logic isn't the same.  Plus it's Montee Ball, totally different scenario.

Not a bad haul for Hooman and both are in the last year of their contract

Why are there so many trades... why are the Saints trading for a blocking TE?

Over valuation of draft picks, and coaches short leashes seem to be the new market inefficiency. Just spent 20 minutes at Saints forums and he had been benched and largely replaced by rookies in the last game. Seemed to be references to being part of a negative locker room but they felt he had more talent than he had showed this year.

He is oft injured except when he isn't so his pride was hurt even though he isn't injured but forgotten is what it means.

I think BB sometimes rotates certain guys through the practice squad as a sort of extended shadow roster/tryout spot.  So like with Thompkins, he knows the system, he's now had a couple of weeks to work with the team in practice this year, BB's had a couple of weeks to see what progress he's made over the last year, and there's depth right now at WR given LaFell is waiting in the wings as well and they don't even have a game this week to worry about.  So they can release Thompkins and evaluate someone else at practice this week.  If two receivers go down in week 4, they probably can still sign Thompkins again even if he ends up on another practice squad.  Not riskless, he could end up on an active roster, but if they know what Thompkins is and they know its unlikely they are using him very soon and he just cleared waivers two weeks ago, why not shuffle in someone else that might eventually have more value than sixth string WR and give them the week of practice reps?

Barker and Vellano sort of fall into the same category

That is really crazy. I bet nobody had ever been traded the same day that they drank a kale smoothie in the presence of somebody named Lyons Yellin.

Unprecedented.

Relatedly, I love kale -- as a heavily salted cooked vegetable with onions -- but why kale smoothies? That sounds nasty.

Per Reiss:

Patriots promote DT Khyri Thornton from practice squad to active roster. Beefing up along defensive front. Team had open spot.

Patriots also sign four players to practice squad: DB Brandon Dixon, OL Sean Hickey, WR Austin Hill and LB Eric Martin.

This is kind of a curious move given that they just traded for Hicks and they just waived Thornton a couple weeks ago. I'm guessing some other team tried to poach him off the practice squad and they didn't want to lose him.

Hill is an interesting dude. He had 81 catches for 1364 yards and 11 touchdowns his sophomore year at Arizona, then tore his ACL and missed his entire junior year. When he came back his senior year, he wasn't the same guy and the Wildcats used him in a more limited role. He might be the most physically gifted receiver they have if he's 100% healthy. That's a big if, and it also doesn't account for all the non-physical challenges (route running, understanding the O, adjusting to the pro game, etc.) that young receivers typically face.

Schedule says lots of "running" offenses in the next five weeks. Beef up front makes a certain amount of game plan sense.

@PatriotsHaven The #Patriots have signed fullback Joey Iosefa to the practice squad. He visited with the team twice throughout the season.

About time. They brought him in twice for a looksy already. Doug Kyed has the current roster breakdown:

@DougKyed
Patriots 53-man roster:
22 offensive players
28 defensive players
3 STers

Patriots practice squad:
7 offensive players
3 defensive players

Nice intro on Iosefa: http://www.buccaneers.com/news/article-1/5-Things-to-Know-About-Joey-Iosefa/774f7085-1ca6-42a1-82fd-afc64a7c5ed3

2. He’s a great athlete for his size.
During his post-draft press conference, Licht said that  Iosefa was an excellent athlete. “He’s a big running back,” Licht said, “a big, thick kid. (He) runs well for his size, a 240-plus guy. He’s got great hands. He’s a really good athlete.”

* Check out 1:55 mark. He's throwing a bomb to a receiver.

Center Bryan Stork also returned to practice on his first day of eligibility. He was placed on short-term injured reserve in Week 1 when the team struggled to diagnose a complicated neck injury that might have been related to a concussion issue. Stork is eligible to return to the game field as early as Week 9, and there's a lot of optimism that he'll be ready at that point, according to a source. Still, the Patriots aren't assuming anything in this case because Stork suffered a setback with the neck when he returned for the first practice of Week 1, so these two weeks of practice will be valuable.
