Houston gave OT Derek Newton a 5-year, $26.5 million deal, including $10m gtd; 13.75M in first 2 and $17M in first 3. Not bad for a 7th rd pick

Randall Cobb is expected to land in Oakland.

I wonder what kind of premium Oakland has to pay to land these FAs.

And here we go ...

And to clarify, Jackson is a re-sign by the Texans. So teams are not being THAT obvious about doing what they please this weekend.

If Jackson gets $20 million guaranteed as reported, Revis' market if he becomes a FA is becoming clearer.  He will command at least $40 million guaranteed.

Wasn't this always DEFINITELY the case? And isn't that just as definitely on the low end of the guarantees for Revis?

Whether it's Spiller or Bush or someone lesser, you get the sense they're moving on from Vereen
That's my take too. Some sort of hybrid back but hopefully for less than 3m a year.

It's not the low end for Revis, but now that some actual numbers get on paper for lesser players the price tag will go up and up for the top of the market.  $20 million guaranteed and $8.5 million base salary for Kareem Jackson is high.  I think any chance the Pats had of getting Revis to sign for something like $14 million per year and under $40 million guaranteed is over.  If that somehow happened, I'd be totally shocked whereas before the bottom of the market was set I thought it could happen.

Even with the injury history, I'd be more excited to bring in CJ. Plus, Vereen has his own injury history. All in on CJ. (As long as Revis comes back, I'm all in on and not all in on whomever.)

Texans take one of the top CBs off the market, reaching agreement with Kareem Jackson on 4-year deal, per source.

I'd be real interested to see the numbers on this contract as well.  This keeps another CB option out of Indy.

The four-year, $34 million deal includes $20 million guaranteed, a source familiar with the deal told ESPN.com.

According to Schefter, Ingram and the Saints have agreed to a 4-year deal, as well.

Yeah, seems like a crazy deal, given their cap issues. No details, but gotta assume 4+ million cap hit this season.

lol holy shitballs, this deal should put them over 170 against the cap.

If the deal's 4 / $16 MM, wouldn't you assume they'd structure it so the hit was less up front rather than more?

How could they structure it and get him to sign? Heavy guaranteed salary later on? Any bonus 8 or more should put them around 3-4 million this year.

Given that they have cap issues and Khiry Robinson, it's a somewhat surprising deal.  In the abstract, it's not a terrible contract though.

Speaking of Saints RB's, is Pierre Thomas an option for the Vereen spot?  I'd expect he'd be cheaper and is a swiss-army knife back that I could see Bill wanting.

We'll have to see when the details come out, but I don't assume there's a ton of guaranteed money here. As a point of reference, Ingram came in the same time as Ridley but has fewer yards, touchdowns, and worse YPC (though pretty close). And even if half the contract is guaranteed, I'd think the first year salary is pretty close to the minimum to keep his initial cap hit low.

I guess I just didn't think that would ever happen, and I still don't, 'though I'd be thrilled if it did. It's his last contract, he remains one of the league's top players at a crucial position, and has always been a shrewd and confident businessman. I assume Revis will get, bottom end, closer to $50 mill guaranteed and is likely looking at an AAV of 16+ mill. $14/year was a pipe dream, IMO.

At end of day, how can a serious football player turn down that from GB to get a few million more from the horrendous and unsettled Oakland franchise, really?

Good for him. Smart decision, still plenty of dough. Stay with Aaron Rodgers, endear yourself further to the fan base. Well played, Randall Cobb.

These guys are risking permanent, life-altering injury on every play.  If I were a pro football player, I would take the maximum guaranteed money just about every time.  The only caveats would be: (1) if I thought a team was so bad that I would actually be at more risk on the team offering more money (bad o-line if a QB, for example); and (2) if the team offering me less played in a location where I could make enough in endorsements to make up for the shortfall in game checks.

That said, I think a lot of these guys are so indoctrinated in the rah-rah, winning-above-all mentality that they ignore logic when making the decision about where to play.

Barnwell has his 2014 F.A. grades out, and it's a sobering look at how things turned out.

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/free-agent-report-card-which-teams-made-the-nfls-honor-roll/

It's a fascinating list that ends up with the Patriots at the top with only one of two "A" grade (Denver being the other):

The champs, perhaps not coincidentally, end up with Denver at the top of the free-agency charts. Replacing Talib with Revis worked to perfection, as Bill Belichick naturally managed to get the most out of the most talented cornerback he’s ever coached. Browner provided a physical presence across from Revis and allowed the Patriots to play the most aggressive man coverage they’ve used since the glory days of Ty Law, while Chung was a surprisingly important part as a run-stifling safety. And while most of the additions were improvements for the defense, it’s worth remembering that nobody in the league was willing to give Edelman even $1 million in free agency two years ago; he signed a four-year, $17 million deal last offseason, and the league’s best secondary couldn’t find a way to stop Edelman in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl.

Others in the AFCE:
  • Jets: D
  • Phins: C-plus
  • Bills: B
I know this -- BB is absolutely superb in leveraging out the hidden value each F.A. period. Even if Revis & McC both leave, I've got a lot of trust in him & Caserio figuring out how to put that money to good use.

In other words, once again, in BB we trust.

He's still young enough that his next contract can be of the chasing money variety. Have to wonder if he gave James Jones a call to get his opinion on leaving GB.

While I'm not going to disagree that BB is well above average when it comes to FA signings I do hesitate to assume he will be able to replace McC and Revis without missing a beat.  The last impact DB I can think of them bringing in prior to last off-season was Rodney, perhaps I'm missing one or two but for the most part their DB FA's have been very unremarkable prior to last year, Deltha O'Neal anyone?

It's impossible to replace Revis nor McCourty other than to sign Revis and McCourty.

The point was to say that BB will reallocate resources to other positions, whether it be pass rushers (Brandon Graham, Jerry Hughes), create a monster 2-TE set (Jordan Cameron, signing Clay and daring Miami to match), replace Vereen (Spiller, Bush), shore up TB's protection (Mike Iupati, Byron Bulaga), or simply extend their own.

Don't forget that like Revis, there will be other cuts who aren't on the market yet as well, (biggest names being Andre Johnson, Percy Harvin, etc.)

I trust this office to make the right decisions to deepen roster depth, if the two big fishes in Revis/McC get away.

11 million a year for Byron Maxwell!? Revis be like $$$$$$$$. Not sure how the Pats can keep him if this is the market.
